Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker believes Amajita star Tylon Smith has a 'really bright future ahead of him.'
Smith was recently named Player of the Tournament at the Afcon U20 Championships in Egypt, where the central defender played a pivotal role in South Africa annexing their maiden continental U20 title.
Amajita defeated Morocco 1-0 in the final, avenging the 1997 defeat to the North Africans.
Smith, along with fellow Stellenbosch rookie Langelihle 'Major' Phili, were greeted with a hero's welcome by their fellow players at the club's annual awards banquet upon their return from Egypt this week.

Stellies right-winger Faiz Abrahams was also part of the SA U20 squad, but was not present at the awards.
'Obviously, I'm very proud of what the players have achieved at the U20 Afcon,' Barker said.
'All of the players, Faiz, Major (Phili) and Tylan really are doing not only the club proud, but also doing South Africa proud.
'So, really pleased with their contribution as we are with Monet Crumpton, the goalkeeper coach. Really, really well done to them.'
The focus will, however, be on Smith after the defender's inspirational displays for Amajita, which also included a crucial goal in the semi-final victory over Nigeria.
The 19-year-old has signed a professional contract with Stellies, but is yet to make his debut in the Betway Premiership.

What Kaizer Chiefs want to win this season

Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Khalil Ben Youssef has opened up about the club's goals for the 2025/26 season, making it clear that Amakhosi are not settling for anything less than silverware. The Glamour Boys have had a perfect start to the Betway Premiership, winning three of the opening matches: 2-0 at Stellenbosch FC, 1-0 against Polokwane City FC and 1-0 over Richards Bay. With nine points on the board, Kaizer Chiefs are sitting first on the league table and eager to improve on last season's ninth-place finish. Kaizer Chiefs transfer news: Three signings Ben Youssef, who has been leading the team alongside second assistant Cedric Kaze while head coach Nasreddine Nabi is away on family leave, emphasised that Kaizer Chiefs are focused on competing for every trophy. 'To be honest with you, we don't have any pressure; we take it game by game, but we are a big team, and every competition we play in, we must win that competition,' Ben Youssef said. Our targets are clear, we are Kaizer Chiefs, we are not here to be in the middle of the table or just to enjoy. 'So we are here to win all the titles, but we as a club don't want to be under pressure. We won our first two games, and there are still 28 games left, and we must win every competition we play in,' the Tunisian mentor concluded. Sebelebele strike breathes life into Orlando Pirates as Stellenbosch looms

Kamogelo Sebelebele's debut equaliser against Mamelodi Sundowns this past weekend has reignited belief at Orlando Pirates as they prepare to face Stellenbosch FC in a key midweek clash. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Hope was rekindled when new signing Kamogelo Sebelebele made an immediate impact at his new club, levelling the score for Orlando Pirates in their MTN8 semi-final first leg against Mamelodi Sundowns this past Saturday. The goal was not only a significant milestone for the former TS Galaxy midfielder but also a timely boost for a team that had endured a lacklustre start to the season, restoring belief in what had been expected before the campaign began. While it is understandable that a new coach and several fresh faces are part of the equation, the reality remains that results are what ultimately matter. Heading into the crucial midweek clash against Stellenbosch FC at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday (7.30pm kick-off), securing a positive outcome will be at the forefront of the team's priorities. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou made an effort to hit the reset button by reintroducing key players from the Jose Riveiro era, including Thalente Mbatha and Evidence Makgopa, in his starting line-up. Their influence on the pitch was noticeable, some more than others, but perhaps Ouaddou's greatest achievement was restoring fan faith. The line-up closely reflected what supporters had been calling for, resulting in unity rather than dissent. That said, fans' preferences should not dictate team selection. Still, their observations hold some merit: too many new additions can hinder chemistry, and while opportunities to score had presented themselves in the first two matches, the spark to break through was often missing. Sebelebele's goal may have been the first sign of that spark finally igniting, but the question remains whether they will be able to carry the momentum. Pirates now face a Stellies side that edged them 1-0 in their last visit to the notoriously challenging Slaughter House, the nickname affectionately given to the Pirates' home ground. A solid result against the Cape Winelands side would not only help Pirates get back on track but also build momentum ahead of Saturday's second-leg clash with Sundowns. Ouaddou has shown faith not only in the newcomers but also in the young players stepping up in the absence of injured regular skipper Nkosinathi Sibisi. Mbekezeli Mbokazi, in only his first full season since promotion from the youth ranks, has been holding the fort admirably. His performances have exceeded expectations for his age, earning praise from Ouaddou. 'Let me be very honest, I have to be careful with compliments because I worry that they might stop working,' Ouaddou said. 'If he continues to work hard, maintain professionalism, and live a disciplined lifestyle, he has a bright future ahead. What I saw against Sundowns was a performance worthy of big European clubs, and we are thrilled to have him here at Pirates, also a big club in Africa, but he must keep working.' At just 19-years old, Mbokazi is already taking on responsibilities typically reserved for senior players. His early success, however, does not lessen the importance of the challenges ahead. The upcoming fixture against Stellies will be just as critical, testing both the young defender and the team's collective resilience under pressure, especially on the back of their two shocking opening losses.

Nasreddine Nabi on his way back to Kaizer Chiefs?

Kaizer Chiefs have defied the odds at the start of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season, winning both of their opening fixtures despite the absence of head coach Nasreddine Nabi, who is currently in Tunisia due to a family emergency. Nabi's wife was reportedly injured in an accident at home, prompting his immediate return to Tunisia. In his absence, assistant coach Khalil Ben Youssef has taken charge of day-to-day operations. Despite the disruption, Kaizer Chiefs have looked sharp and organised – beating Stellenbosch FC in the opener and then Polokwane City, scoring three unanswered goals across both matches. Ben Youssef emphasised that Nabi remains actively involved, even from abroad. 'We are in contact every day. We prepare every session and every game together. Coach Nabi may not be physically here, but his presence is still felt in everything we do.' The team's technical staff, long accustomed to working closely together, has helped maintain tactical consistency. According to reports, Nabi is soon expected to begin the long journey back to South Africa and is expected to arrive before the end of the week. Kaizer Chiefs now sit top of the standings on goal difference, level on six points with Durban City, Marumo Gallants, and Sekhukhune United. The club will look to continue their early dominance when they host Richards Bay at FNB Stadium on Tuesday in their third league match of the season. Kick-off is at 19:30. Tickets for the Glamour Boys' second home match of the season are available online at and or Shoprite, USave and Checkers supermarkets at R60.
