Eddie Palmieri, pioneering Latin jazz musician and Grammy winner, dies at 88

Eddie Palmieri, the avant-garde musician who was one of the most innovative artists of rumba and Latin jazz, has died. He was 88.
Fania Records announced Palmieri's death Wednesday evening. Palmieri's daughter Gabriela told The New York Times that her father died earlier that day at his home in New Jersey after 'an extended illness.'
The pianist, composer and bandleader was the first Latino to win a Grammy Award and would win seven more over a career that spanned nearly 40 albums.
Palmieri was born in New York's Spanish Harlem on December 15, 1936, at a time when music was seen as a way out of the ghetto. He began studying the piano at an early age, like his famous brother Charlie Palmieri, but at age 13, he began playing timbales in his uncle's orchestra, overcome with a desire for the drums.
He eventually abandoned the instrument and went back to the playing piano. 'I'm a frustrated percussionist, so I take it out on the piano,' the musician once said in his website biography.
His first Grammy win came in 1975 for the album 'The Sun of Latin Music,' and he kept releasing music into his 80s, performing through the coronavirus pandemic via livestreams.
In a 2011 interview with The Associated Press, when asked if he had anything important left to do, he responded with his usual humility and good humor: 'Learning to play the piano well. ... Being a piano player is one thing. Being a pianist is another.'
Palmieri dabbled in tropical music as a pianist during the 1950s with the Eddie Forrester Orchestra. He later joined Johnny Seguí's band and Tito Rodríguez's before forming his own band in 1961, La Perfecta, alongside trombonist Barry Rogers and singer Ismael Quintana.
La Perfecta was the first to feature a trombone section instead of trumpets, something rarely seen in Latin music. With its unique sound, the band quickly joined the ranks of Machito, Tito Rodríguez, and other Latin orchestras of the time.

Popular Long Island wedding venue files for bankruptcy

You would think that the place that held Kevin Jonas ' wedding and was the backdrop to Taylor Swift 's Blank Space music video would be endlessly successful. But it has now come to light that the popular venue - Oheka Castle in Huntington, Long Island - has filed for bankruptcy. The Chapter 11 filing came with the property only having $57.27 left in its checking out with no cash on hand, according to court documents filed in the US Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of New York. Kahn Property Owner LLC - its ownership entity - also reported to owe a staggering $63.5 million to creditors. By filing for bankruptcy, Melius' hope is that he doesn't have to see it go up for auction. The filing means that the property won't be totally liquidated and so the popular venue - which also served as the set for Orson Welles' Citizen Kane and HBO's Succession - can continue. A Chapter 11 filing entails a process of financial reorganization rather than total liquidation. 'The weddings are all still on,' Melius told Newsday as a result, explaining that any bookings that have been made will continue without disruption. The castle was originally 109,000 square feet when it was built in the 1920s. But since the addition of the Terrace Room in 2003 - built to accommodate bigger parties - Oheka Castle is now an incredible 115,000 square feet with 117 rooms and 50 baths. The castle also includes a hotel, restaurant, and several events space. For those who choose to get married on the sprawling estate, couples can invite up to 350 guests. While weddings start at about $70,000 for 50 guests, the price can go up to $300,000. If you're just interested in staying in the hotel, a nightly stay starts at $495 and goes up to $1,295 a night if you get a suite. The castle also offers special 'weekday packages' for couples looking for a romantic getaway or even expecting parents. One of these packages - dubbed the Ultimate Romantic Evening Package for Two - costs $15,000. This package includes a one-night stay in a luxury suite, round-trip limousine service, exclusive use of the ballroom, a seven-course gourmet dinner, white glove butler service, and much more. And thanks to Melius's decision, if you're looking for a luxury wedding, the backdrop to your next music video, or a $15,000 night of romance, you can still have it at the Oheka Castle.

Popular adult star Lina Bina found dead aged just 24

The adult industry has suffered yet another devastating loss following a string of recent deaths. The latest X-rated performer to lose their life is Lina Bina, better known as 'Miss John Dough' to her many fans online. Lina died on Tuesday, August 5 at just 24 years old, according to the Polk County Medical Examiner. The late star's cousin - content creator Miguel Santiago - confirmed her death and shared a tribute for her on TikTok. 'It's so tragic. It's so unbelievable,' he said in a video. 'Keep your family close, 'cause you don't know when's the last time you're gonna see them or even speak to them.' News of her passing has spread quickly over social media, with Twitch streamer Richard Stark and OnlyFans star Coco Bliss both posting tributes to Lina online. In a clip Coco posted on her Instagram stories, she showed Lina - who boasted more than 195,000 followers between her Instagram and TikTok accounts - and her dancing in a club. Over the video she wrote, 'You left us too soon... Rest in peace lovely.' Lina's death comes just weeks after the tragic passing of porn star Kylie Page, who was found dead at age 28 from a suspected drug overdose in June. Page was focused on her sobriety and had just celebrated a milestone of 60 days sober before she died, according to TMZ. The outlet said that not only was Page attending AA meetings regularly, she was even leading some of them herself. Page had a long history with substance abuse, beginning when she was just a teenager. The blonde bombshell battled drugs for years before eventually checking into rehab and then living in a sober house as she attempted to get her life back on track. She was one of the adult performers featured in the Netflix docuseries Hot Girls Wanted: Turned On, which was executive produced by Rashida Jones. Page's death also comes as bodybuilding porn star, Damien Stone, died at the age of 32 in March. Stone was a prolific adult performer and bodybuilder who had amassed a large following due to his extremely muscular physique. The Moldovan-born star was also known for his versatility in front of the camera, filming X-rated scenes with men, women, and transgender women. He worked for many of the industry's biggest studios during his career, including Raging Stallion and Men. Stone pulled back from mainstream porn in 2020 to focus on bodybuilding and his OnlyFans account.

Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star accused of 'endangering' three-week-old baby after holding newborn while blindfolded for outrageous Nicki Minaj social media challenge

One of the stars of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives has been accused of 'endangering' her baby after involving the newborn in a risky internet challenge inspired by Nicki Minaj 's High School music video. Mikayla Matthews, who lives in the US state of Utah, rose to fame as a 'Mormon influencer', amassing more than two million followers on TikTok even before she appeared on Hulu's reality TV show Mormon Wives in September 2024. The 25-year-old mother-of-four and husband Jace Terry welcomed the latest addition to their family, Lottie June, on July 17. In a short clip published on TikTok and Instagram earlier this week, Mikayla is seen attempting a viral challenge that requires someone to balance on the narrow heel of one of their stiletto shoes. Mikayla, however, complicated the already precarious challenge by attempting it from atop a platform while wearing a blindfold and cradling Lottie June in her arms - and has faced a backlash as a result. In the video captioned 'How it feels balancing postpartum and four kids with being the breadwinner', the influencer managed to balance for a few seconds before losing her footing and coming off the platform. While Mikayla does not fall to the ground - and little Lottie June remains peaceful in her arms - many viewers appeared to be alarmed by Mikayla's clip, with several criticising her for compromising her baby's safety. One person wrote: 'Why does everyone think this is ok… If she fell her newborn would be seriously hurt... Bizarre behaviour just for the clicks'. She was criticised for 'endangering her new born baby - but other social media comments were more divided Another added: 'Girl this ain't it. Don't put your newborn baby in a position to get hurt privately, or socially...' While a third weighed with: 'I'd rather see someone doing a dance about their baby in a hospital than endangering their baby in any way. Wtaf?!' A fourth social media user said: 'Don't you care for your baby's safety? He's two weeks old for G-ds sake. You are more concerned about a trend and likes than your baby. Outrageous!' And a fifth added: 'Someone just broke their spine doing this. Please be careful.' Others, however, were more forgiving, with one person praising the stunt as 'massively impressive'. Another joked: 'Please don't do this - the newborn will start expecting a new trick for every feed and you will have a mini diva on your hands!!' The Daily Mail has attempted to reach Mikayla's reps for comment. Only yesterday it was reported that a mother broke her spine after attempting the same challenge just weeks after giving birth. Mariana Barutkina, from Yekaterinburg in central Russia, was trying to film her first piece of content as an influencer when she suffered the painful injury while recreating a pose from the pop star's High School music video. Footage shows the 32-year-old beautician attempting to balance in sky-high stilettos on top of a jar of baby food, which had been placed on an upturned saucepan on her kitchen island. As she posed, gripping a friend's hand for balance, she suddenly loses control and tumbles backwards with a look of panic on her face. The clip, which has since gone viral, ends with Mariana sprawled on the floor - and later being diagnosed with a compression flexion fracture in her spine. She claimed she has now been told she must now wear a corset for three months. The so-called 'Stiletto Challenge' has taken social media by storm, with thousands of users attempting to copy a scene from a 2013 music video in which Minaj poses beside a swimming pool, crouched in heels with one leg crossed over the other. Recalling her horrifying ordeal, Ms Barutkina said she attempted the stunt just eight weeks after the birth of her son. 'I decided to start a blog, my first content shoot - and here I am leaving the doctor's with a diagnosis,' she said. The so-called 'Stiletto Challenge' has taken social media by storm, with thousands of users attempting to copy a scene from a 2013 music video in which Minaj poses beside a swimming pool, crouched in heels with one leg crossed over the other 'Irony? Karma? Or just life, which always tests our strength at the most unexpected moment.' The video has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times and prompted a wave of online criticism, with many questioning the mother's priorities. One viewer wrote: 'Irony? Karma? Stupidity and courage.' Another added: 'To live to 32, have children, but not gain intelligence - you have to try really hard.' A third even cruelly said: 'What kind of upbringing will a child receive from such a blogger?' Responding to the backlash, Mariana insisted her baby was not at risk. 'Because of one video, which was poorly filmed, I woke up as a popular person,' she said. 'People, thank you for the popularity, for your concerns and for your comments. 'For those who are worried about my child, I will also reassure you, he has two nannies and while I was filming, one of them was with him.' According to The Spinal Injuries Association, approximately 4,700 people are injured or diagnosed with a spinal cord injury every year in the UK. This equates to someone becoming paralysed every two hours. The organisation also estimates around 105,000 people across Britain are currently living with a spinal cord injury. Under NHS guidance, the majority of spinal fractures are treated conservatively - which means allowing the bone to heal naturally and therefore without a specific brace or the need for surgery. This healing process often takes three to four months but the majority of the pain settles by six to eight weeks. Medics suggest taking regular pain killers. When this isn't an option, some fractures may be helped by a supportive brace or even surgery.
