Suspected rebel killed, guns seized in Butuan clashes

GMA Network08-07-2025
A suspected rebel was killed while two high-powered firearms were seized during a series of armed encounters in the hinterlands of Barangay Pianing, Butuan City on Monday, July 7, 2025.
According to the 4th Infantry Division (4ID), troops of the 29th Infantry Battalion responded to a report about the presence of armed men allegedly recruiting and extorting from residents in the area.
The operating team engaged the armed men in a firefight that lasted for about two minutes, which resulted in the confiscation of an M16 rifle.
After a few hours, another encounter erupted while the troops were pursuing the fleeing armed group.
The encounter lasted for about five minutes, which resulted in the death of an alleged member of the New People's Army (NPA) who is yet to be identified. A R4 rifle was also confiscated.
'This encounter is a direct result of our continued collaboration with local communities and former rebels who have chosen the path of peace. We remain committed to safeguarding our peace-loving people and putting an end to the threats posed by the NPA,' 29IB Commander, Lt. Col. Mark Tabon, said.
4ID Commander, Major General Michele Anayron, Jr., lauded the troops for the successful operation.
'This latest success highlights our relentless pursuit of peace and security in Caraga. Every neutralized enemy and captured firearm diminishes the NPA's capacity to conduct armed violence. We call on the remaining members of the NPA to lay down their arms and return to the folds of the law, while they still have the chance. Otherwise, our troops will relentlessly hunt them down to prevent them from further endangering the lives of innocent civilians and disrupting peace and development in the region,' Anayron said.

Samar's most wanted suspect nabbed in Caloocan

An alleged New People's Army commander who is tagged as Samar's most wanted man was arrested by police in Caloocan City. In Nico Waje's Saturday report on 24 Oras Weekend, a team from the Northern Police District- Special Operations Unit apprehended the suspect identified as Alias Anot in Barangay Bagong Silang. Authorities said Anot is the most wanted man in Samar for multiple criminal complaints that include robbery with murder in 2008 and attempted murder in 2018. Police added he also has an attempted direct assault case in 2015. Police Brigadier General Jerry Protacio, Acting NPD District Director, said they had information the suspect was operating in the CAMANAVA area and coordinated with Samar law enforcement to subdue Anot. Protacio said records alleged Anot was involved in a direct encounter between elements of the NPA and government troops that led to a soldier being killed and resulted in several missing firearms. Once they validated the information and confirmed the arrest warrant, the cops staged the operation to apprehend Anot who surrendered peacefully. Anot declined to talk with the media but according to NPD officials he admitted he was involved with the NPA. The NPD said Anot is in their custody and will be transferred to Samar where he will face the cases that were filed against him. — RF, GMA Integrated News

8 suspected rebels killed in Northern Samar clashes

Eight suspected members of the New People's Army (NPA) were killed during armed encounters in Barangay San Isidro, Las Navas, Northern Samar on Thursday, the Philippine Army's 8th Infantry 'Stormtroopers' Division (8ID) said Friday. In a statement, the military said a concerned civilian provided information to the state forces about a group of armed men supposedly conducting extortion and threatening the farmers in the area. The 8ID said its troops at 2:30 a.m. launched an assault on a supposed hideout of the suspected rebels allegedly surrounded by International Humanitarian Law (IHL)-banned Anti-Personnel Mines, which prompted the military to call for fire support. Seven suspected rebels were killed in the initial clash. Around 10:00 a.m., the military said another clash occurred as the reinforcing troops of the 803rd Infantry Brigade tracked down fleeing suspected rebels going west of the first encounter site. One suspected rebel was killed in the second clash. The military did not disclose any casualties from the camp of the state forces. Recovered from the encounter sites were five M16 rifles and two R4 rifles with one M203 grenade launcher attached. "We have repeatedly called on them to return to their families, but this group continues to cling to their twisted ideology that has claimed the lives of countless Filipinos,' Joint Task Force Storm and 8ID commander Major General Adonis Ariel G. Orio said. 'We therefore reaffirm our call to the remaining members of the CTGs, this may be your best chance to lay down your arms, abandon the armed struggle, and return to the fold of the law. We will not stop until Eastern Visayas is free from your acts of terror. We will hit you hard," he added. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
