Eight suspected members of the New People's Army (NPA) were killed during armed encounters in Barangay San Isidro, Las Navas, Northern Samar on Thursday, the Philippine Army's 8th Infantry 'Stormtroopers' Division (8ID) said Friday.
In a statement, the military said a concerned civilian provided information to the state forces about a group of armed men supposedly conducting extortion and threatening the farmers in the area.
The 8ID said its troops at 2:30 a.m. launched an assault on a supposed hideout of the suspected rebels allegedly surrounded by International Humanitarian Law (IHL)-banned Anti-Personnel Mines, which prompted the military to call for fire support.
Seven suspected rebels were killed in the initial clash.
Around 10:00 a.m., the military said another clash occurred as the reinforcing troops of the 803rd Infantry Brigade tracked down fleeing suspected rebels going west of the first encounter site.
One suspected rebel was killed in the second clash.
The military did not disclose any casualties from the camp of the state forces.
Recovered from the encounter sites were five M16 rifles and two R4 rifles with one M203 grenade launcher attached.
"We have repeatedly called on them to return to their families, but this group continues to cling to their twisted ideology that has claimed the lives of countless Filipinos,' Joint Task Force Storm and 8ID commander Major General Adonis Ariel G. Orio said.
'We therefore reaffirm our call to the remaining members of the CTGs, this may be your best chance to lay down your arms, abandon the armed struggle, and return to the fold of the law. We will not stop until Eastern Visayas is free from your acts of terror. We will hit you hard," he added. —VAL, GMA Integrated News

Seven suspected NPA members were killed in an armed encounter with government troops in Barangay San Mateo, Uson, Masbate on July 27, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) reported. The firefight, which lasted about 30 minutes, was carried out by the 2nd Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army under Joint Task Force Bicolandia, operating within the 9th Infantry Division. High-powered firearms were recovered at the encounter site. According to the AFP, the operation is part of its ongoing, intelligence-driven campaign to suppress insurgent activities in the Bicol Region. 'This tactical victory significantly weakens the CPP-NPA-NDF in Bicol, as the AFP continues to push for peaceful surrender and reintegration through the E-CLIP program,' the military said in its weekly briefing. The clash in Masbate marks one of the latest actions in the AFP's intensified counterinsurgency efforts. From January 1 to July 24, 2025, the military has recorded the neutralization of 1,005 CTG members and supporters across the country. Breakdown of the figures includes: 867 who surrendered, 71 apprehended, and 67 killed in armed engagements Additionally, 540 firearms and 302 anti-personnel mines were recovered or surrendered, while 96 encampments were taken over by government forces. The AFP also reported progress in its campaign against Local Terrorist Groups (LTGs). Since January, 128 LTG members and supporters have been neutralized — 114 surrendered, four were arrested, and ten were killed. Troops also recovered 142 firearms, five anti-personnel mines, and seized five encampments from LTG elements. The military reiterated its call for remaining armed groups to return to the fold of the law and avail of the government's Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP), which provides assistance for those willing to reintegrate into mainstream society. — Sherylin Untalan/BAP, GMA Integrated News

2 killed, 1 nabbed in separate ops in Maguindanao

Two people were killed while another was arrested in separate operations against illegal drugs and selling of firearms in Maguindanao provinces. Police and military personnel were about to serve an arrest warrant against a man who is facing charges for violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act in Datu Montawal, Maguindanao del Sur. However, the operating team engaged the subject of the warrant and his companions in an exchange of fire, which resulted in the death of one of the suspects and the arrest of his companion. The subject of the warrant escaped and is being pursued, as of this writing. Seized from the suspects who were slain and arrested were a .45 pistol, a magazine, ammunition, and sachets of suspected shabu. Meanwhile, troops of the Marine Battalion Landing Team-2, personnel of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), and other police units conducted an entrapment operation against the alleged selling of firearms in Barira, Maguindanao del Norte. The target of the operation was identified as alias 'Rokkie,' who is facing charges for murder, frustrated murder, and robbery. Instead of surrendering, the suspect allegedly opened fire, prompting authorities to return fire. The suspect was killed during the encounter. According to the 6th Infantry Division (6ID), the operation was launched after an informant tipped authorities that the suspect was allegedly planning to sell firearms in the area. During the operation, authorities seized several firearms, including an M16 rifle, M14 rifle, several magazines, ammunition, a grenade, and a caliber .45 pistol. 6ID added that the suspect was said to be part of an armed group allegedly involved in illegal activities, including gun-for-hire, robbery-holdup, and illegal drug trade in the region. 'Ang mga matagumpay na operasyong ito ay sumasalamin sa matatag na ugnayan at koordinasyon ng AFP at PNP. Patuloy nating pinapaigting ang suporta sa pagpapatupad ng batas upang gawing ligtas ang ating mga komunidad mula sa banta ng ilegal na droga, armas, at armadong grupo. Binabati ko ang ating mga tropa sa kanilang katapangan at mabilis na aksyon,' 6ID Commander, Major General Donald Gumiran, said. (These successful operations represent the firm connection and coordination between the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police. We will continue to intensify our support to enforce the law in order to safeguard our communities from the threat of illegal drugs, firearms and armed groups. I commend our troops for their courage and prompt action.) — GMA Regional TV News
