Every year across the state, tens of thousands of Ohioans are mauled by dogs, sometimes suffering catastrophic injuries, long-lasting trauma and crushing medical costs.
Avery Russell, 11, of Columbus, is facing years of surgeries to rebuild her nose, repair scars and replace her ears after being attacked by pit bulls while on a playdate with a friend in June.
Michael Palmer, 51, of Lakemore in Summit County, doesn't like going out in public because so many people stare at him. In December 2022, his neighbor's dogs bit off his ears, thumbs and an index finger. He can no longer work as a machinist or play guitar.
And the Echelbarger family is struggling to make sense of how two pit bulls − who were on the radar for the neighborhood, police and dog warden − viciously killed Jo Echelbarger, 73, as she worked on her garden outside her condo in Pickaway County.

Victims of horrific attacks, and the loved ones of those killed, want to see Ohio lawmakers bolster state dog laws. They want felony charges for dog owners in certain vicious attacks and euthanasia for dogs after the first serious injury or fatality − changes that some lawmakers have tried, and failed, to enact.

Elsmere city councilwoman resigns after alleged misconduct and missed meetings
Hours before her fate as a council member was set to be determined at a June 4 meeting, an Elsmere city councilwoman resigned from her position effective immediately, according to an email sent to The Enquirer and other city council members. Serena Owen, who was serving her second term on Elsmere's city council submitted her letter of resignation after months during which she was accused of misconduct and missed meetings. "I am writing to formally submit my resignation from my position as a Councilwoman for the City of Elsmere, effective immediately," Owen wrote. "This decision has not been made lightly but is necessitated by the escalating challenges that have profoundly impacted my ability to serve effectively and safely," Owen said her resignation comes as a result of her fear of being shot at a public meeting by a man she claims has harassed her online, and her "repeated and justified requests for a minimal inexpensive ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) hybrid video teleconference accommodation to attend council meetings virtually (free Zoom/Teams link)" being dismissed. In March, the six-member Elsmere City Council unanimously voted to begin proceedings to remove Owen from office. Since then, they've announced seven charges against her including willful negligence and misconduct. A public meeting was set to be held June 4 from 6-7 p.m. to discuss the removal of Owen from her position on the council. The Enquirer reached out to the City of Elsmere's city clerk Katie Hehman, who declined to confirm the resignation. Son of New Albany church leaders pleads not guilty to new rape charges
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — The son of a New Albany church's leaders pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to additional charges including rape, according to court documents. Gary Keesee Jr., the son of Faith Life Church senior pastors Gary and Drenda Keesee, pleaded not guilty to charges contained in a superseding indictment that was filed in May. He previously pleaded not guilty to the original charges in April. Watch previous coverage in the player above. Keesee Jr.'s previously issued $2 million bond with no 10% provision was continued, according to the documents. He must deposit $5,000 to the Clerk's office for a GPS monitoring device before he can leave jail, and is not allowed to have contact with the alleged victims. We still don't know which Ohioan had it On April 21, Keesee Jr., 36, was indicted on 11 counts of rape, 11 counts of gross sexual imposition and five counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. At the time of his arrest, he was charged with two counts of rape out of Mount Vernon Municipal Court. The date range for the charges spans from 2001 to 2012 with a Licking County prosecutor saying the ages of the victims ranged from 6 to 15 at the time of the alleged offenses. 3 sisters found dead after planned visitation with dad; He's still missing
WENATCHEE, Wash. (WJW) – Three young sisters from Washington who didn't return home after a planned visitation with their father were found dead at a campground on Monday. The father is still missing at this time. According to a press release from the Wenatchee Police Department, the 5, 8 and 9-year-olds were last seen around 5 p.m. on May 30 when they left their home with their father, 32-year-old Travis Decker. It was not normal for Decker to go outside of the parameters of the parenting plan and it is a cause for alarm, they added. In an updated press release on Tuesday, the police department said it is 'saddened to report the three missing girls have been found deceased. We want to express our sincere and deep heartfelt condolences to the family at this time.' According to the release, the search was narrowed down to an area in Chelan County on Monday, and a warrant for Decker's arrest was obtained by Wenatchee Police for three counts of custodial interference. Ohioans can soon buy over twice as much nonmedical marijuana At around 3:45 p.m., a Chelan County deputy located Decker's vehicle near the Rock Island Campground, but it was unoccupied. While searching the area, the bodies of the three missing girls were found, but Decker was not located, the release said. At this time, the search for Decker is still ongoing, and Police are asking that anyone who believes they may have seen Decker since Friday, or knows his current whereabouts, is asked to call 911. He is now wanted for three counts of murder and kidnapping. According to the release, Decker is a former military and has extensive training.
