Popular cider pulled from UK shelves, pubs and restaurants after nearly a decade
A beloved cider brand has been permanently withdrawn from UK supermarkets, pubs, and eateries after nearly 10 years on the market, with the proprietors explaining the key factors behind their decision which has left customers "saddened".
Jaspels, launched by Janet and Adrian Percival in 2017, has ceased trading. The couple initially reached out on social media for contributions of apples to kickstart their venture, which went on to bag several awards.
The cider was made from locally sourced apples on the island of Anglesey in Wales, and was produced onsite along with a shop and bar. Janet said Jaspels had "sadly closed for a number of reasons," reports Birmingham Live.
She pinpointed first and foremost the lease length offered at their location which she believed had a "significant impact on the future planning of the business".
She continued: "That on top of seasonality challenges made it unviable in the end. A change of personal circumstances also meant we could not continue as myself and Ade separated due to stress.
"I left in November, and it finally closed mid-July.
"I would like to say that we loved every moment of Jaspels and will miss the barn and bar massively. We hope it will hold happy memories for you all over the nine years it was open in Amlwch and Aberffraw.
"It is very sad for the island and ourselves. Thanks for the memories."
A local patron expressed their disappointment in response, writing: "So very sad to hear this - we have enjoyed Jaspels on so many occasion's - it was such a idyllic location and had amazing views."
Another lamented: "Such a shame. We were looking forward to visiting for our yearly Jaspels Cider fix next week. Good luck for the future."
The craft cider had enjoyed glowing 5/5 reviews on TripAdvisor, with many making reference to the quality of the cider and the decent price point which saw many happy customers returning time and time again.
One customer enthused: "Back again to sample the amazing cider and apple juice... get yourself down there amazing experience and amazing prices definitely going back again."
Echoing the sentiment, another visitor remarked: "Great little place. Sat outside taking in the stunning scenery sampling the delicious cider. Will definitely return".
One more customer praised: "Absolutely brilliant brewery, stunning views, relaxing seating area, very friendly staff.... and of course the cider is amazing!"
They continued their commendation, saying: "We tried the cinnamon and clove, never had this flavour before but it was lovely. Would highly recommend this place as a stop off on holiday."

Scottish city called 'an urban wanderer's delight' named country's pub capital
A Scottish town has been named country's top pub city, boasting nine pubs per square mile, far ahead of Glasgow and Edinburgh. The future of Scottish pubs has been thrown into doubt as more drinkers swap pints in the bar for evenings in their own living rooms. Rising living costs, soaring energy bills and limited government support have combined to create a challenging climate for the trade. Despite the difficulties, pubs remain a cornerstone of social life. They are often the places where friendships are formed, relationships begin and where conversations with strangers can banish loneliness, Scottish Daily Express reports. For those keen to enjoy a change of scene from their local, Dundee has emerged as one of the most appealing destinations in the country. Recent research placed the city at the top of Scotland's pub rankings. Analysis by games room specialists Liberty Games found Dundee has nine pubs for every square mile, giving it the joint fifth-highest density in the whole of the United Kingdom. It comfortably outperformed Scotland's largest cities, with both Glasgow and Edinburgh recording just five pubs per square mile. The study examined the addresses of more than 50,000 British pubs alongside geographical data from over 350 locations to determine where drinkers have the greatest choice. Dundee's strong showing has reinforced its growing reputation as a lively hub for socialising. An online discussion about the city's best modern pubs has highlighted a range of popular options. The Nether Inn on Nethergate was the most frequently mentioned and holds the number one spot on TripAdvisor. Known as a favourite with the student crowd, it offers food during the day and, according to TripAdvisor, becomes 'the place to go' at night. Molly Malones, which has been pouring drinks since 1823, remains a West Port institution. Other venues attracting praise include Abandon Ship on Whitehall Crescent and The Glass Bucket on St Andrew's Street, both of which have earned high scores on Google. Bergies on Bell Street, The Speedwell Bar on Perth Road and Draffans on Couttie's Wynd also rank highly among locals and visitors. However, Dundee's appeal extends far beyond its pub scene. VisitScotland describes the city as offering 'all sorts of treasures' and being 'an urban wanderer's delight.' Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! The V&A Dundee, the first branch of the world-famous museum outside London, has become a major draw. Located on the waterfront, it hosts a rotating calendar of exhibitions that attract visitors from across the country. Just a short walk away, Captain Scott's RRS Discovery offers a glimpse into polar exploration history, while the Mills Observatory provides the chance to view the stars from what was the UK's first purpose-built public observatory. Those seeking outdoor attractions can head to Camperdown Country Park, a sprawling green space ideal for walking and wildlife watching. The nearby suburb of Broughty Ferry adds to the city's charm, with its historic castle, award-winning beach and a wide selection of independent shops and cafes.

HMRC starts brutal VAT crackdown on people who 'should have known'
HMRC is set to target the construction industry in a VAT crackdown that's seen the taxman take on people they think 'should have known' HMRC is reportedly setting its sights on the construction industry in a VAT crackdown. It's been claimed that HMRC is "pursuing" compliant businesses for sums owed by others, amid an ongoing dispute between HMRC and fraudsters exploiting staffing agencies to swindle the taxman. HMRC's list of deliberate defaulters for the first half of 2025 includes at least six staff companies that have defaulted on a whopping £51m of tax. The fraudsters prey on innocent victims who require temporary workers and outsource their payrolls and pensions. These scammers set up what seem to be legitimate staffing agencies - but then conveniently forget to pay the VAT. HMRC has found it challenging to recover the outstanding tax because these staff agencies have few assets, according to reports. In other news, thousands of Brits to get shock letter from HMRC after drastic new tax rule comes into force. READ MORE: HMRC seven-year rule rule could land you with hefty tax bill if you don't act now Now, the taxman is turning his attention to firms using the temp workers. All HMRC needs to do is prove that a taxpayer 'should have known' that the transactions were linked with fraud. This crackdown all ties back to the so-called Kittel principle, which initially pondered the question of exactly what the taxable person 'should have known', reports Birmingham Live. The High Court, in its judgment, concluded that the right to deduct could only be denied where the taxable person knew or should have known that the transaction was connected with fraudulent evasion of VAT. HMRC argued that a taxable person's right to deduct could be denied if he knew or should have known that it was more likely than not that his purchase was connected with fraudulent evasion of VAT. HMRC states: "The test in Kittel is simple and should not be over-refined. It embraces not only those who know of the connection but those who 'should have known'. Thus it includes those who should have known from the circumstances which surround their transactions that they were connected to fraudulent evasion." The site added: "If a trader should have known that the only reasonable explanation for the transaction in which he was involved was that it was connected with fraud and if it turns out that the transaction was connected with fraudulent evasion of VAT then he should have known of that fact. He may properly be regarded as a participant for the reasons explained in Kittel. "The true principle to be derived from Kittel does not extend to circumstances in which a taxable person should have known that by his purchase it was more likely than not that his transaction was connected with fraudulent evasion." "But a trader may be regarded as a participant where he should have known that the only reasonable explanation for the circumstances in which his purchase took place was that it was a transaction connected with such fraudulent evasion," it adds.
