The Tesla Cybertruck design disaster just keeps getting worse
It already seemed clear that the Tesla Cybertruck was a flop commercially when the company started offering incentives and even resorted to a desperate sales pitch on the White House lawn. It's also no news that the electric pick-up truck has design flaws, from frames snapping to the strange light positioning and an inability to handle snow. The car isn't even road legal in many countries.
But just when it seemed the Cybertruck's reputation couldn't fall any further, Tesla's now suffered the ultimate embarrassment for its brand. It's had to recall every single vehicle. And this isn't like that time when Tesla issued a recall because of a font. It's because panels have been flying off on the road since they're merely stuck on with glue.
Tesla has agreed to recall all 46,100 Cybertruck pickups currently out there after the US traffic safety administration NHTSA raised concerns about the glue used to hold exterior sheet metal. The NHTSA received a complaint from an owner after a panel lining the side of the roof came loose. The adhesive, it seems, can become brittle, particularly in cold conditions, causing a major accident risk
Sadly, the news is hardly surprising. The design flaw has been pointed out in videos on social media like the X post above for months. The car enthusiast WhistlinDiesel described the gluing of the panel as "unacceptable" in a TikTok video last year (below).
Tesla says it will replace the original bonding agent with a different structural adhesive that, according to the NHTSA recall report, won't be "prone to environmental embrittlement". That doesn't exactly inspire confidence, though; those panels are still stuck on with glue.
It's the latest brand embarrassment for Tesla and CEO Elon Musk. The Cybertruck was long delayed due to engineering problems, and it massively increased in price while being downgraded in specs from the original 2019 concept. There have already been recalls to fix software and hardware, and deliveries are nowhere near the company's initial projections of 500,000 units a year.
To cement the vehicle's disgrace, there have been reports of Cybertruck owners trying to sell their vehicles, either out of embarrassment at the car or horror at Musk's support for far-right political groups.
The Cybertruck debacle has also distracted Tesla from the potentially much more bankable Model 2, which it first teased five years ago. The increasing controversy of Musk's role as advisor to Donald Trump could now harm the prospects of the upcoming entry car if it ever reaches production.
While Musk's entry into government might make sense for his personal goals, it's not been great for this brands. Tesla shares have lost a third of their value since the start of the year. The company's been dropped from the Vancouver International Auto Show because of security concerns, and even big Tesla bulls like the tech analyst Dan Ives are saying Musk needs to pull back from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) if he's to save Tesla.
'The brand damage started off as limited in our view based on our initial survey work… but now has spread globally over the last few weeks into what we would characterise as a brand tornado crisis moment for Musk and Tesla,' Ives wrote in a note to investors reported by The Guardian.
It may be the case that Musk thinks the reputation of the Tesla logo in the car market no longer matters too much as the company aims to move towards tech innovations like its robotaxi and humanoid robots. But even if EVs eventually become a minor part of the business, public view of the brand identity will be vital to build consumer trust in those products.

Tesla is facing a new federal investigation into its autonomous driving features
Tesla is facing an investigation from federal safety regulators into whether it delayed notifying the government about crashes involving its driver assistance technology. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is looking into whether or not the company is complying with regulations requiring it to report data about crashes involving its cars when they are using certain driver assistance features. In a federal filing released Wednesday, NHTSA said that 'reported crashes occurred several months or more before the dates of the reports. The majority of these reports involved crashes in which … the time required a report to be submitted within one or five days of Tesla receiving notice of the crash.' Many Tesla vehicles come equipped with Autopilot, a system designed to help drivers on limited access highways, and the company's so-called 'Full Self Driving' feature, which is supposed to be able to guide cars on both city streets and highways. Both features are only supposed to be used with a person in the driver's seat who is paying attention and can take control of the car. While NHTSA has numerous ongoing investigations into Tesla and the safety of its autonomous vehicle efforts, the latest investigation is the first probe launched since President Donald Trump returned to office. It also could be seen as another blow to Tesla's bet that its autonomous vehicle technology will be central to its future growth and profitability. Investors had believed that the Trump administration would be advantageous for Tesla CEO Elon Musk's self-driving ambitions, possibly even spelling the end of existing safety investigations into the company. Musk devoted hundreds of millions of dollars to Trump's election and served as a significant advisor to Trump after his inauguration. The two have since had a falling out, however. NHTSA said Tesla has indicated it has fixed past problems collecting and reporting the required data. The agency said it plans to audit Tesla data to find out if that is true. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy said in April that his department would be changing the reporting requirements, however, as part of efforts to promote autonomous vehicles. 'We've heard from industry partners that crash reporting requirements for automated vehicles is way too expensive,' he said in announcing the department's AV program. 'But these reports help DOT monitor road safety. So to balance these concerns, we've streamlined the process.' Tesla was found liable earlier this month in a fatal 2019 crash of an Autopilot-equipped Model S that hit a parked car, resulting in the death of one of its occupants. The company was ordered to pay $329 million in damages. Tesla has announced plans to appeal. Tesla did not respond to a request for comment. The ‘Tesla of China' Defies All Odds to Rise 93% in 2025: Is It Too Late to Buy the Stock Now?
The Chinese electric vehicle (EV) industry is plagued by a price war, which is especially taking a toll on startup names in the sector. Xpeng Motors (XPEV), however, stands out among startup Chinese EV companies this year with YTD gains of 93%. The company has impressed with strong deliveries, which rose to a record high last month, as well as an improvement in its financial performance. The company's Q2 2025 earnings, released earlier this week, were also better-than-expected and helped justify its YTD outperformance over peers like Nio (NIO) and Li Auto (LI) as well as U.S.-based rival Tesla (TSLA). Get exclusive insights with the FREE Barchart Brief newsletter. Subscribe now for quick, incisive midday market analysis you won't find anywhere else. In this article, we'll examine why XPEV might continue its rally in 2025 and beyond. Will XPEV Stock Rise More in 2025? I have been bullish on XPEV for some time now, and the stock hasn't disappointed me. Here are the five reasons I believe Xpeng Motors might continue its rally. 1. Delivery Ramp Up with New Models The company's new models have been quite successful, and it is looking to launch several new models beginning with the refresh of the P7, for which it has received the highest preorders in its history. During the Q2 earnings call, Xpeng Motors' CEO He Xiaopeng expressed optimism that the P7 would be among the top three selling models in the RMB 300,000 segment. He predicted that the company's monthly deliveries, currently in the 30,000s, will surpass 40,000 beginning in September as it starts delivering the refreshed P7. Switch Auto Insurance and Save Today! Affordable Auto Insurance, Customized for You The Insurance Savings You Expect Great Rates and Award-Winning Service In December, Xpeng will introduce its X9 Kunpeng Super Electric Edition, its first extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) with an electric range of 450 kilometers and a combined range of 1,500 kilometers. EREVs are quite popular in China, and Xpeng Motors intends to launch more of these in the coming years. EREVs would help Xpeng Motors expand its total addressable market and would eventually lead to higher deliveries. 2. International Expansion Despite tariffs in several regions, including Europe, Xpeng Motors' overseas sales more than tripled in the first half of the year to 18,000 units, and it is now the top-selling Chinese startup EV brand in 10 markets, including Norway and France. Notably, Chinese automakers are gaining traction in Europe even as Tesla (TSLA) continues to lose market share there, in part due to CEO Elon Musk's political entanglements. 3. Strategic Partnerships Xpeng Motors has expanded its partnership with Volkswagen (VWAGY) and expects the IP licensing revenues from the partnership to increase in the second half of 2025. The company is also open to global partnerships for its Turing artificial intelligence (AI) chip. The Volkswagen partnership and any further such deals would help buoy XPEV's margins and cash flows. 4. A Clear Path Toward Profitability Xpeng Motors' vehicle gross margins were 14.3% in Q2, 3.8 percentage points higher than the previous quarter. It marked the eighth consecutive quarter of an increase in margins, which is no small feat considering the price war in China. The company reiterated its guidance of achieving profitability in the final quarter of this year. 5. Advancements in Autonomous Driving and Humanoids While currently none of the players in the EV race, including Tesla, have full L4 autonomous driving capabilities, Xpeng Motors is hopeful of mass-producing L4-capable vehicles in 2026. It also plans to launch pilot robotaxi services in some regions. During the Q2 earnings call, Xiaopeng said the company is 'actively preparing for mass production' of its humanoid in the back half of next year. At the AI Tech Day later this year, Xpeng will unveil its next generation of humanoids. Xpeng Motors' stock could see further rerating as it advances its autonomous driving and humanoid business. Xpeng Motors' Stock Forecast Sell-side analysts have also been warming up to Xpeng Motors, and it now has a 'Strong Buy' rating from 53% of analysts as tracked by Barchart, while the corresponding number three months back was under 44%. Xpeng Motors' mean target price of $23.38 is 14.8% higher than the Aug. 20 closing price, while the Street-high target price of $30 is 47% higher. Xpeng Motors trades at a forward enterprise value-to-sales multiple of 1.27x, which is higher than Chinese peers like Nio, Li Auto, and Zeekr (ZK). However, I believe Xpeng Motors has earned the right to trade at premium valuations due to its strong execution. Also, its progress in autonomous driving and robotics – which apparently are the key drivers of Tesla's valuations – warrant a higher multiple. While not an apples-to-apples comparison, the corresponding multiple for Tesla is 10.19x. I believe Xpeng Motors (XPEV) is one Chinese company that comes quite close to Tesla in strategy as well as ambitions and has the potential to become the 'Tesla of China' - a classification once reserved for Nio. Overall, I find Xpeng Motors as one of the best ways to play the EV, autonomous driving, and humanoid story in China and see the stock rising higher from these levels. TSLA: Tesla Shares Slip as NHTSA Opens Probe Into Crash Reporting Delays
This article first appeared on GuruFocus. Aug 21 - Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) stock traded lower on Thursday after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it has launched a new probe into the automaker's crash reporting practices. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 1 Warning Sign with NVO. Is TSLA fairly valued? Test your thesis with our free DCF calculator. The agency flagged several incidents where Tesla submitted crash reports involving its driver-assistance and self-driving systems months after the accidents took place. Current rules require companies to file within one day if a serious crash occurs, or within five days after the manufacturer becomes aware of the incident. NHTSA called the review an audit query, with the goal of identifying why delays occurred, how widespread they may be, and what corrective actions Tesla has in place. Regulators also plan to examine whether the company's internal reporting system adequately meets federal safety standards. The probe adds to a series of ongoing safety-related reviews tied to Tesla's Autopilot and Full Self-Driving features. While the company continues to expand deployment of its advanced driver systems, regulators are placing greater scrutiny on how quickly accident information reaches federal databases. Investors will watch whether the agency's findings prompt further oversight or new compliance measures in the months ahead. Effettua l'accesso per consultare il tuo portafoglio
