Lexus RZ

Yahoo19-03-2025

With so many cars spuriously purporting to be sporty or have racing genes, it's refreshing when the presentation for a new one hardly even mentions athleticism. The Lexus RZ is the firm's flagship electric car, and instead it ought to offer 'confidence, control and comfort'.
Mind you, it still has up to 309bhp and will out-accelerate quite a few hot hatches.
The RZ was Lexus' first step into getting serious about EVs. It had the UX 300e for a while, but that was never quite a heavy hitter, whereas this car is and goes toe to toe with the likes of the Tesla Model Y, Nissan Ariya and Hyundai Ioniq 5.
The RZ shares its e-TNGA platform – which is bespoke to EVs – with the Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra.
A cheaper, front-wheel-drive model (badged 300e) joined the range in 2024 to address issues concerning range and price.
If you don't like people looking at you when you're parking in Tesco, this is not the car for you. Its sharp lines and size make it stand out.
At 4805mm in length, it's a fair bit longer than the bZ4X, Ioniq 5 and Skoda Enyaq, yet it's hard to figure out where that extra length has gone, because the RZ doesn't feel any more spacious inside than those cars.
Sure, adults won't be short on rear leg room and the boot is big, but that's equally true of those smaller cars.
Lexus has equipped upper versions of the RZ with small infrared heaters to try to save some all important battery. Traditional heating isn't energy-efficient and the sister bZ4X is known to chew through battery trying to heat and cool the car. These heaters act a bit like a blanket for your legs and knees. They work well and interact seamlessly with the heated seat and steering wheel.
The car's materials are a cut above the bZ4X's, thankfully, although they are very spec-dependent.
Higher trims bring the soft leather and interesting technical materials to rival the Genesis GV60 but lower ones introduce some coarser leather and cheaper plastics.
The 14.0in infotainment touchscreen is as easy to use as a phone, but it can be distracting, because it hosts the fan-speed controls.
Leg room in the back is huge, making the RZ one of the most practical electric SUVs on the market. The boot too is right up there with rivals and features underfloor storage for the charging cables. There's no under-bonnet storage, mind you. And no glovebox if you get the infrared heater.
The standard model makes 308bhp from its two electric motors, resulting in a 0-62mph time of 5.5sec, which is basically hot hatch pace. It's really brisk and makes mincemeat of country lane overtaking manoeuvres.
Like with any decent-powered EV, there's real neck-snap acceleration under full throttle in its sportiest setting. But it's very unlikely that you will be doing this very often. Why? Keep scrolling to get our verdict on the range…
The front-wheel-drive model cuts power to 201bhp, extending the 0-62mph time by about 2.5sec. But it's not like it's slow, and Lexus isn't making huge dynamism claims for the RZ anyway.
Despite not being offered with adaptive dampers, the RZ is a very smooth and quiet-riding car that's reassuring, satisfying and surprisingly plush-feeling – although not exciting – to drive.
You can genuinely feel the effects of what Lexus calls Direct4, a system whereby power and braking force are rapidly shuffled between the front and rear axles to control and reduce the pitch and dive that normally accompanies acceleration and braking. It stops short of being transformative but does introduce a pleasant calmness to the way the car drives.
Although the software can cleverly distribute torque, the front motor is more powerful than the rear one, so the RZ feels at best neutral when cornering under power.
That's fine, though: it's not trying to be sporty, remember. And even so, the RZ musters adequate grip, while its standard steering is well weighted.
Naturally, the FWD model goes without the Direct4 system. But there's a comfortable honesty about the 300e's straightforward ride, handling and steering.
We have also tried Lexus's One Motion Grip steer-by-wire system on the European press launch. It was technically still a prototype system, but it still worked impressively and added some sense of occasion.
Having just 150deg of movement between locks ensures you never have to take your hands off the steering 'wheel', which is why the yoke shape works.
Weirdly, it seems to impart ever so slightly more information about grip levels than the conventional steering. The widely variable ratio robs you of the last 5% of precision, which would be a problem on a sports car but isn't on a comfy SUV.
The battery capacity is 71.4kWh, which is smaller than key rivals'. The small size is compensated by the low energy consumption of the two motors, claims Lexus.
What's more, under normal driving, the 4WD RZ mainly uses the smaller, less power-hungry 108bhp rear motor. When you ask for full power, that naturally combines forces with the 201bhp front one, but the software sends power back and forth as it sees fit for the prevailing situation.
Indeed, the official consumption figure of 3.4-3.7mpkWh is Tesla-like, but the end result is still a pretty disappointing WLTP claimed range of 272 miles, which drops to 252 miles on the 20in wheels that the vast majority of UK-bound RZs will have.
The car's rapid-charging rates are also unimpressive, 150kW being the bare minimum we would expect from a new premium EV.
Either way, neither range nor charging speed is a particular strength of the RZ. In real-world driving, it advertises around 210 miles of usable range on a full charge, dropping to about 165 miles as soon as you turn on the air conditioning (just as both the bZ4x and Solterra will).
Range is improved in the FWD model by it ditching the 108bhp rear-mounted motor and running on the 201bhp front one only. The WLTP figure jumps to 295 miles.
The RZ heralds some interesting new technology and is all the better for it on the road.
Its practicality and interior quality are the reasons you would be drawn to it. The FWD 300e is our pick of the RZ range simply because it goes further on a charge.
If it does have a problem, it's that there are a lot of premium SUVs, many of which can go farther and charge more quickly. But there's likeable character, comfort and smoothness here, and Lexus knows how to look after customers.

Police cast wide net in probe of defunct North Texas car dealership's business practices

Desire Godfrey said it was time for a vehicle upgrade. The Lancaster mother had her eye on a Lexus. "I had a baby, so I'm looking for something reliable for me and a baby," Godfrey said. She searched online and found what she thought was the right vehicle at The Reserve Auto Group in The Colony. She described the sales process in May 2024 as a positive experience. Warranty and GAP insurance issues But an unexpected oil change six months later changed everything. Godfrey, 33, said a Lexus dealership informed her the vehicle was not under warranty. She also discovered her GAP insurance policy didn't exist. "They (Reserve Auto Group) never paid the warranty company the money they were supposed to pay to activate this warranty and this GAP insurance," she said. Car loan charges continue Godfrey said the costs were included in her car note. She filed a report with The Colony Police Department — and she's not alone. Police said they received their first complaint on Jan. 31. According to a news release, police have been investigating multiple fraud claims connected to the dealership since 2023. The business shut down in December 2024, but complaints continue to come in. Alleged auto fraud pattern Investigators said customers were allegedly instructed to write separate checks for aftermarket warranties or GAP insurance policies. Those payments were supposed to go to third-party providers, but police said the dealership allegedly cashed the checks and never forwarded the money — leaving customers without coverage. Another victim comes forward A second alleged victim, who spoke to CBS News Texas anonymously, said she and her husband also bought a Lexus from the dealership. She provided a non-activation letter from DOWC Administrative Services LLC, a company that offers GAP insurance and warranties. The letter stated: "Please be advised that Reserve Auto has failed to remit payment to Us as the Administrator and Provider for your Contract. Consequently, the Contract was not activated in our system." Investigation still ongoing Police have not made any arrests or publicly identified anyone associated with the allegations. Officers said they are continuing to vet additional alleged victims. CBS News Texas is not naming the person listed as the dealership's owner, as police have indicated he did nothing wrong. He spoke briefly by phone, saying he wanted to schedule an appointment to discuss the claims further because he believed "we did not have all the facts." When asked for clarification, he said he didn't have time to explain. Legal team responds Two emails followed the call, and attorneys from Herrin Law introduced themselves. "We have no comment at this time. Thank you for your interest in our client's side of the story," attorney Benjamin Palatiere said. He requested that all future inquiries be directed to him. Buyer left without coverage Meanwhile, Godfrey said the vehicle itself has not had any issues. But she continues to pay for a warranty and insurance that don't exist. "So nobody wants to refinance the loan. Nobody wants to give me GAP insurance," she said. "It's just more so like I'm going to take it or leave it. If I wreck the car, then I would have to figure out a way to pay that car off." Godfrey said she hopes to recover the money one day.

2026 Lexus GX Review, Pricing, and Specs

Overview The Lexus GX is now a thoroughly modern luxury off-roader, sharing much with the recently downsized Toyota Land Cruiser. But while the LC uses a hybrid four-cylinder for motivation, the GX gets a 349-hp twin-turbo V-6 engine backed by a four-wheel-drive system with a low range. Creature comforts abound in all versions of the Lexus, while the Overtrail is set up for the most serious off-roading. One compromise of the off-road-ready Overtrail trims is the loss of the available third-row seat, limiting the passenger count to five. That said, the GX's rearmost row is pretty tight, so you may not miss it all that much. What's New for 2026? There are no major changes expected for the GX this year. Pricing and Which One to Buy The price of the 2026 Lexus GX is expected to start around $66,000 and go up to $82,000 depending on the trim and options. Premium $66,000 (est) Premium+ $70,000 (est) Overtrail $73,000 (est) Luxury $78,000 (est) Overtrail+ $81,000 (est) Luxury+ $82,000 (est) The GX550 has two personalities: luxury on-roader and trail-conquering off-roader. For buyers who plan on spending the majority of their time on asphalt, we'd suggest the Luxury trim, as it classes up the GX550's interior with plenty of nice-to-have features, including semi-aniline leather upholstery; 10-way-adjustable front seats with massage, heat, and ventilation; illuminated door sill plates; and second-row window shades. It also comes with the bigger 22-inch wheels that better fill the GX's large wheel wells for a more upscale look. For a bit more, the Overtrail+ trim provides a more rugged appearance and significantly more capability for off-roading, but the compromise is that it eliminates the GX's third row of seats and some of the luxury items listed above. But if you're planning outdoor adventures that include traversing challenging terrain, the Overtrail is well worth consideration. Engine, Transmission, and Performance A twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 engine that makes 349 horsepower is standard in the GX550. A 10-speed automatic is also standard, and all models come with four-wheel drive. Overtrail and Overtrail+ trims are decked out with more off-road goodies than the other models, including 18-inch wheels with 33-inch all-terrain tires, an aluminum skid plate, an adaptive suspension system with more wheel articulation, a crawl-control feature, and selectable drive modes for differing terrains. The GX550 feels punchy off the line, but on the highway we noticed a disconcerting amount of hood flutter. The ride is fairly stiff, especially on the available upsized wheels. Steering is crisp, but the GX's handling is about what you'd expect for the tall, boxy SUV, meaning there's plenty of body roll. The Overtrail shines off-road; outward visibility is excellent, which is especially handy when navigating tight trails. We confirmed as much in an off-road-oriented comparison test. The transfer case allows the driver to select the low-range gearset without locking the center differential, which allows for a tighter turning radius, and the Electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (E-KDSS) can disconnect the front or rear anti-roll bars independently of one another to help improve stability, reduce head toss, and increase traction over rough terrain. 0–60-MPH Times At our test track, a GX550 Premium hit 60 mph in a respectable 6.2 seconds. That's a full second quicker than the previous-generation GX managed at our track. It's also quicker than the Land Cruiser's 7.7-second effort. View Photos Michael Simari | Car and Driver Towing and Payload Capacity The GX550 can tow up to 9096 pounds, which far exceeds the previous-gen GX460's 6500 pounds as well as the Land Cruiser's 6000-pound rating. The GX also tows more than luxury-brand rivals such as the Audi Q7 and the BMW X5. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG The EPA hasn't released any fuel economy information for the 2026 GX yet, but the 2025 model earned ratings of 15 mpg city, 21 mpg highway, and 17 mpg combined. On our 75-mph highway route, the GX550 Premium we tested delivered on its 21-mpg estimate. The GX is well in arrears of the four-cylinder hybrid Land Cruiser's EPA numbers: 22 mpg city and 25 mpg highway. For more information about the GX's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo Despite the GX's rugged exterior styling, luxurious environs await you once you climb aboard. Faux- or genuine-leather upholstery is available in a variety of colors, and Overtrail variants offer faux-suede accents in a dark green shade. Premium and Luxury trims have three rows of seats with space for up to seven with the standard second-row bench; a pair of captain's chairs is optional and brings the seating capacity down to six. Third-row space is severely limited, however; the Lexus TX crossover has a big advantage here. Overtrail models skip the third row altogether and seat five, but the middle passenger's foot room is compromised by the plastic base of the center console. A cooled storage bin, a head-up display, and a digital key fob are all available as options. In our testing, the GX550 Overtrail swallowed 18 carry-on-sized boxes behind the second-row seat and 33 with the rear seats folded, but the cargo floor is high off the ground making it awkward to load heavy items. View Photos Michael Simari | Car and Driver Infotainment and Connectivity All GX models come with a 14.0-inch infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a separate 12.3-inch digital gauge display that can be reconfigured to show a variety of information to the driver. Nearly all climate controls are in the touchscreen. Most models have six USB-C ports spread throughout the interior, but Overtrail and Overtrail+ models get just four; a wireless smartphone charging pad is optional and positions the phone up and at an angle. A 10-speaker stereo is standard, but audiophiles can upgrade to a 21-speaker Mark Levinson surround-sound system. Safety and Driver-Assistance Features The GX comes equipped with a suite of driver-assistance features that includes automated emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and lane-departure warning. For more information about the GX's crash test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include: Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist Standard adaptive cruise control with a lane-centering feature Warranty and Maintenance Coverage When it comes to warranty coverage, Lexus outpaces rivals such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz. 2026 Lexus RZ Updates Revealed, Everything You Need to Know

Three years after introducing its first electric vehicle, Lexus has upgraded the RZ for the 2026 model year, making this sleek SUV a more worthy competitor. It will now come as the 221-horsepower RZ 350e with front-wheel drive, the 308-horsepower RZ 450e with all-wheel drive, and the new, range-topping 402-horsepower RZ 550e F Sport also with all-wheel drive. The three models reportedly have 0-60 mph times of 7.2 seconds, 4.9 seconds, and 4.2 seconds, respectively. Range has also increased, with Lexus quoting 300 miles for the RZ 350e FWD, 260 miles for the RZ 450e AWD with 18-inch tires, and 225 miles on the new RZ 550e F SPORT AWD with 20-inch tires. The RZ now sports a North American Charging System charging port on the passenger side for charging at Tesla Superchargers. Filling the battery pack from 10% to 80% requires about 30 minutes using a DC fast charger. If more power is at the top of your checklist, the RZ 550e F Sport is for you, albeit at the expense of range. Interestingly, Lexus has fitted its trim-topping model with M Mode, a virtual gearbox that simulates manual gear shifting via paddle shifters. If this sounds familiar, that's because Ferrari and Hyundai already have it. The RZ 550e F Sport also wears the appropriate go-fast attire, with a black emblem, rear spoiler, front and rear bumper moldings, front grille, and 20-inch wheels. Its cabin proves equally sweet, lined in black Ultrasuede with blue stitching and with a panoramic glass roof, aluminum pedals and footrests, and an F Sport steering wheel. While the new Lexus RZ's upgrades help keep it competitive, the automaker's plan to build it in Japan means that it won't be eligible for a federal tax credit, should that survive the onslaught by Congress. Then again, Lexus hasn't released pricing yet, promising to do so closer to the 2026 Lexus RZ's on-sale date. Currently, the 2025 RZ starts at $43,795 and tops out at $58,605 with lower range figures, but given the specter of tariffs, those prices will likely increase. So far, at least, it seems like the 2026 Lexus RZ's longer range and higher performance should be well worth the wait, along with what is likely to be a higher price.
