New £35million attraction to come to UK
Swansea Council has recently aided the development of a major new leisure attraction by selling off land, as the initial groundwork is already underway, reports North Wales Live.
With the hopes of attracting an estimated 450,000-plus visitors per year, the new project includes a gondola lift spanning the River Tawe to Kilvey Hill.
As well as this, upon arrival at Kilvey Hill, thrill-seekers can enjoy a sky swing, zipline and luge tracks.
Visitors can also expect a hilltop restaurant, mountain biking trails, picnic spots, walking paths, a children's play area, and an array of new green spaces.
The new venture also has the financial backing of the Welsh Government and Swansea Council, who will contribute an approximate total of £12million.
Headed by Skyline Enterprises, the tourism company previously revealed that its board had approved a budget of £35million for the project.
This will mark the company's first European development.
Council approves land sale and pledges support
Swansea Council's cabinet approved the land sale and pledged its financial support in a private meeting last month.
A council spokesperson confirmed: "Everything that's needed for the scheme is now in place, apart from one area of land that we're in continuing negotiations with Natural Resources Wales about.
"The council's financial commitment to support the scheme remains unchanged, subject to the conclusion of financial negotiations. Our investment is expected to be repaid in full as part of an agreement with Skyline."
Inside multi-million pound upgrade for popular Scots tourist attraction
New Zealand-based Skyline Enterprises has revealed that work is already underway as it plans to start relocating reptiles.
This relocation work was approved as part of the planning application.
A Skyline Enterprises spokesperson said: "The reptile relocation work is being managed by a team of qualified ecologists who review areas of work before any activity starts each day, ensuring work follows all regulations.
"A strict protocol is to be followed if an issue is found to ensure the best possible outcome.
"This work has been approved as part of the planning conditions, and no licence is required."
Not everyone is in favour of the project
Plans for this new project were first revealed in 2017, with public consultation events taking place in 2023.
The application was approved in March this year by the council's planning committee, however, so far, has been met with around 560 letters of objection.
Objectors have raised concerns over increased traffic, the visual impact of the project, a potential impact on private water supplies, and fears over what would happen if the scheme didn't deliver on its expectations.
However, the committee report said the cumulative benefits of the proposal would outweigh "significant harm" arising from landscape and visual impacts.
Planning agent John Hurley explained that beyond the development attracting a substantial number of visitors, it will also create jobs, and improve access to the hill.
He also added that the development will result in a net biodiversity gain due to replacement tree planting and woodland management.
Speaking in 2023, Wales' deputy minister for arts and sports, Dawn Bowden, said the proposed attraction was a "unique inward investment opportunity" for the Welsh Government and "significant in the further development of Swansea as a vibrant city destination."

Rolls Royce sells UK pension fund to PIC in 4.3 billion pound deal
Aug 10 (Reuters) - Aircraft engine maker Rolls-Royce (RR.L), opens new tab sold its UK pension fund to Pension Insurance Corporation (PIC) in a 4.3 billion pound ($5.78 billion) deal, PIC said in a statement on Sunday. The deal will cover Rolls-Royce's entire outstanding liabilities to its workers, comprising the pensions of 36,000 people. "This is a win-win for all our stakeholders" Rolls-Royce CFO Helen McCabe said in the statement, adding that it is a step towards simplifying Rolls-Royce. The transaction follows PIC's announced acquisition by Athora, pending regulatory approval. The deal was first reported by Bloomberg News earlier this week. PIC specializes in defined benefit pension schemes, known as bulk annuities. Demand for bulk annuities has surged in the last few years as companies seek to shed defined benefit, or final salary, pension schemes from their balance sheets. ($1 = 0.7435 pounds)

High street chain with 185 stores launches 70% off closing down sales ahead of 25 shops shutting – see the full list
THE Original Factory Shop has announced it is shutting three more locations and has launched big closing down sales. The budget retailer has been closing stores across the UK as part of a huge restructure. 1 The company has already shut a series of stores this year and has announced more closures in the coming weeks, including its locations in Kirkham, Lancashire. Now it has revealed another three stores will be shutting. One is the store in Caldicot, Wales, which announced in a Facebook post that it will be closing for good this week. The post told customers: 'Final reductions in store with at least 50% off everything in store!!! Only 6 days left so come and grab a bargain while you can!!!' Customers have shared their disappointment that the store is closing on social media. One customer said: 'What day is your last day? So sad, I'd like to bring some flowers in for the staff if it's a day I'm not on my holiday x' Another devastated customer said: 'Another good store lost.' While a third added: 'Awful for the staff. Love that shop.' A closing down sale was launched with discounts of up to 70%. Two other stores have also announced that they will be closing. Among them is the shop in Market Drayton, Shropshire, which will close its doors for the last time on September 20. In a post on its Facebook page it said: 'We are sorry to let you know… this store is closing. Thank you to our wonderful customers and store colleagues for your support throughout our time here in the local community.' Loyal customers commented on the post, as one said: 'Gutted for you guys, will definitely miss shopping with you. Good Luck with your future plans X' Another said: 'So sorry for you all, good luck in your future ventures.' The store announced the closure in a similar Facebook post but added: 'We'd love to see you in store one final time to say goodbye.' It is not yet clear when the store's last day will be. The news comes after at least four The Original Factory Shop stores closed last month. Among them was the store in Staveley, Chesterfield, which shut its doors for good on July 12. Meanwhile, the shops in Caernarfon, Wales, and Bridlington, Yorkshire, closed down on July 20. A final store, in Cupar, Fife, was shuttered on July 27. In total, 22 shops have closed or are set to shut this year. The Original Factory Shop did not respond to our request for comment. What's happening with TOFS? The Original Factory Shop was bought by private equity firm Modella Capital in February. Modella is known for taking on struggling retailers and has also recently acquired Hobbycraft and WHSmith's high street shops. The firm quickly launched a restructuring effort to renegotiate rents at 88 The Original Factory Shop stores. At the end of April, Modella drew up plans to initiate a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) for the retailer. Companies often use CVAs to prevent insolvency, which could otherwise force stores to close or trigger the collapse of the entire business. They allow firms to explore different options, including negotiating reduced rent rates with landlords. But The Original Factory shop previously told The Press and Journal that a 'number of loss-making stores would have to close' during the restructuring.

Millions of O2 customers warned of huge change to free perks coming in HOURS as popular site closes down
O2 customers have been warned of a big change coming to the network's popular perk programme starting tomorrow. And it's important to take note so you don't miss out on any freebies and offers. 2 Fortunately, all the usual top rewards are still on offer for millions of customers to get hold of. O2 Priority is making changes to how you access the service from Monday. That's especially key given O2 releases its biggest rewards on Monday with a limited number of codes given out. The most recent offer was discounted tickets to Thorpe Park, Alton Towers and Chessington World of Adventures. But the website version of O2 Priority is closing down meaning you can no longer redeem anything that way. Instead, you will have to do it all entirely via the dedicated app on iOS and Android. An alert on the website reads: "From 11 August 2025, you won't be able to access Priority through our website. "Don't miss out on exclusive rewards and experiences - download the Priority app today." Of course, O2 Priority is also well known for providing access to pre-sale tickets. The firm has revealed that users will still be able to access O2 Priority pre-sale tickets on Ticketmaster following Monday's changes. 'To access O2 Priority pre-sale tickets on Ticketmaster, firstly, make sure that you're signed into your O2 Priority account, then click on your desired link in O2 Priority and it will take you to Ticketmaster, where you can book and pay for your tickets," O2 said. 2 How to save on your mobile phone bill NOT happy with your current mobile phone deal? If you're outside the minimum term of your contract then you won't need to pay a cancellation fee - and you might be able to find a cheaper deal elsewhere. But don't just switch contracts because the price is cheaper than what you're currently paying. Take a look at how many minutes and texts, as well as how much data you're using, to find out which deal is best for you. For example, if you're a heavy internet user it's worth finding a deal that accommodates this so you don't end up spending extra on bundles or add-ons each month. Also note that if you're still in your contract period, you might be charged an exit fee. Ready to look elsewhere? Pay-as-you-go deals are better for people who don't regularly use their phone, while monthly contracts usually work out cheaper for those who do. It's worth using comparison websites, such as MoneySupermarket and to compare tariffs and phone prices. Billmonitor also matches buyers to the best pay-monthly deal based on their previous three months of bills. It only works if you're a customer of EE, O2, Three, Vodafone or Tesco Mobile and you'll need to log in with your online account details. There's also MobilePhoneChecker, which has a bill monitoring feature that recommends a tariff based on your monthly usage. If you're happy with your provider then it might be worth using your research to haggle a better deal.
