Malay Mail30-04-2025

PUTRAJAYA, April 30 — Malaysia made history by clinching the top spot in the Open Data Inventory (Odin) 2024/25 rankings, with an overall score of 90 and an exceptional 99 in data openness, surpassing 198 countries.
Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the official report, released yesterday by Open Data Watch (ODW), marked a significant leap for Malaysia, which was previously ranked 67th in the 2022/23 assessment.
He said that the achievement was a clear testament to Malaysia's ability to strengthen its official statistics system and compete on the global stage.
'This success proves Malaysia's ability to compete globally in terms of the openness and coverage of official data.'
'This achievement is also the result of joint efforts by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) and other government agencies that have worked closely to provide timely and reliable data,' he said in a statement yesterday.
Mohd Uzir said the Odin assessment not only promoted best practices in the country's data governance but also reinforced Malaysia's global standing in terms of more granular data availability, transparency, and the use of open data.
'This initiative directly strengthens the country's statistical system by providing high-quality data sets that meet modern analytical needs, while also supporting innovation in academic research and enabling data-driven decision-making,' he said.
He said the recognition achieved in the Odin 2024/25 assessment also highlighted DOSM's ongoing commitment to developing an inclusive, fact-based data ecosystem and driving sustainable development, in line with the aspirations of Malaysia Madani and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
'With this significant achievement, Malaysia demonstrates its strong commitment to enhancing data-driven governance and reinforcing its position both regionally and globally,' he said.
The Odin assessment report, released biennially, focuses on the openness and coverage of a country's official data, assessed through the availability of key indicators, temporal and geographical disaggregation, and the ease of access to data in machine-readable formats. — Bernama

However, on a monthly basis, sales value fell 2.3 per cent from RM164.3 billion in March. Domestic-oriented industries expanded by 3.6 per cent in April, supported by a 10.0 per cent rise in food processing products, 5.9 per cent in basic metals, and 3.7 per cent in fabricated metal products (excluding machinery and equipment). On employment, Mohd Uzir said the sector recorded 2.40 million workers in April, an increase of 1.2 per cent year-on-year. Salaries and wages paid in April totalled RM8.3 billion, up 2.4 per cent from a year earlier, though they declined 0.9 per cent from RM8.4 billion in March. As a result, sales value per employee rose by 3.6 per cent to RM66,907. Average salaries and wages per employee climbed 1.2 per cent to RM3,460. - Bernama

PUTRAJAYA, June 11 — Malaysia's unemployment rate drops from 3.1 per cent in March to three per cent in April, the lowest in 10 years, according to the Statistics of the Labour Force Malaysia for April 2025 released by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) today. Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Mohd Uzir Mahidin stated that the number of unemployed persons decreased by 0.7 per cent to 525,900 persons in April 2025, compared to 529,600 persons in March. 'A promising country's economic position has contributed to stable progress in Malaysia's labour force during the month, with an increase in the number of employed persons and higher labour force participation rates, while unemployment continues to decrease,' he said in a statement. He said the number of labour force continued its upward trend in April, increasing by 0.2 per cent to 17.34 million persons compared to 17.31 million persons in March. 'Consequently, the labour force participation rate rose by 0.1 percentage points to 70.8 per cent compared to 70.7 per cent in March, indicating more labour participation in the market,' he said. In terms of the economic sector, Mohd Uzir stated that the services sector remained a key driver of employment growth, particularly in wholesale and retail trade, accommodation, food and beverage services, as well as transportation and storage activities. He said positive trends were also recorded across the manufacturing, construction, agriculture as well as mining and quarrying sectors. Mohd Uzir said the unemployment rate for youth aged 15 to 24 years was unchanged at 10.3 per cent in April 2025, with 298.3 thousand unemployed youths. He said the number of persons outside the labour force rose by 0.2 per cent to 7.17 million persons in April compared to 7.16 million persons in the preceding month, mainly due to housework and family responsibilities accounted for 43.7 per cent, followed by schooling and training reasons at 41.1 per cent. Mohd Uzir said the country's labour force is anticipated to remain optimistic and expand in the coming months of this year, bolstered by strong economic policies and stable domestic demand. 'Despite the global geopolitical tensions, Malaysia's labour force is seen to remain resilient due to stable unemployment, the growing services sector and technology, as well as an increasing investment in digitalisation and automation,' he added. — Bernama

Malaysia's IPI rises 2.7% in April, below forecast

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's Industrial Production Index (IPI) grew 2.7% in April 2025, according to the Department of Statistics (DOSM), falling short of expectations. According to a Reuters poll of economists, factory output had been expected to rise 3.9%. DOSM said the IPI growth in April 2025 was mainly supported by a 5.6% rise in the manufacturing sector, while output in the mining and electricity sectors fell by 6.3% and 1.6%, respectively. In April 2025, export-oriented manufacturing industries grew 6.4%, up from 4.8% in March, driven by a 22.8% surge in the manufacturing of vegetable and animal oils and fats, and an 11.1% rise in electronics and optical products. However, output fell 10.2% month-on-month (M-o-M). Meanwhile, domestic-oriented industries grew 3.9% in April 2025, up from 2.3% in March. The growth was supported by higher output in food processing (8.2%), fabricated metal products (5.0%), and basic metals (6.0%). On a monthly basis, the sector rose 0.3%. DOSM said the 6.3% decline in the mining sector in April 2025 was due to lower production of natural gas (-10.0%) and crude petroleum & condensate (-0.7%). On a M-o-M basis, the mining index fell 13.9%, reversing a 17.8% gain in March. The electricity index registered a decline of 1.6% in April 2025, improving from the 2.2% contraction recorded in the previous month. Compared to March 2025, the electricity index fell 3.1%. Globally, IPI trended higher in April 2025, with strong year-on-year growth in Taiwan (22.3%) and Vietnam (10.2%), while moderate gains were seen in China (6.1%), Singapore (5.9%), South Korea (4.9%), Thailand (2.2%), the United States (1.5%), and Japan (0.7%). DOSM said the IPI rose 2.4% in the January–April 2025 period, down from 3.6% in the same period last year. Manufacturing expanded 4.5%, while the mining and electricity sectors declined by 4.0% and 1.7%, respectively.
