Pioneering Blue Peter editor Biddy Baxter dies at 92
Born Joan Maureen Baxter in Leicester, she studied at St Mary's College, Durham University, where she saw recruitment flyers for the BBC.
She joined the public broadcaster as a radio studio manager in 1955, and was promoted to producing Schools Junior English programmes and Listen With Mother before making the transition to television.
Baxter took over as editor of Blue Peter in 1965, several years after the programme's launch. She introduced viewer engagement segments including the national appeals and the Blue Peter badge, encouraging children to send letters, pictures and programme ideas.
Baxter served as editor for more than two decades, winning two Bafta awards and receiving 12 nominations.
On her departure from the show in 1988, she was awarded the programme's highest honour, a gold Blue Peter Badge.
'I didn't want to do anything other than Blue Peter,' she told the Guardian in 2013. 'I certainly never wanted to be an administrator or in charge of anything. It was an absolute dream and I never wanted to do anything else. It was a terrific time to be in television.'
Baxter continued to act as a consultant to the BBC directors-general John Birt and Michael Checkland after her departure, and received the special award at the Bafta children's awards in 2013.

BBC Strictly Come Dancing start date confirmed as line-up revealed
Strictly Come Dancing will be back on screens in just a few weeks' time and the official date has been announced, just as stars such as Vicky Pattison and Stefan Dennis sign up Strictly Come Dancing's start date has been revealed. The BBC favourite is due to return to screens in a matter of weeks, and now the broadcaster has finally confirmed when it will be back on screen amidst a host of celebrity announcements. Fans will be able to tune in in just over four week's time, as Jon Kay confirmed live on BBC Breakfast: "Strictly starts on the 20th September," so that is when Craig Revel Horwood, Shirley Ballas, Motsi Mabuse and Anton Du Beke will be seen for the first time this year as they launch the programme's 23rd series. For over a decade, Strictly Come Dancing has launched around the third week in September, but its very first series, which was won by Channel 5 newsreader Natasha Kaplinsky, it was actually broadcast from May until July in 2004. Since then, the programme has occasionally begun in October but it has mostly aired from September and always runs throughout the autumnal months in the build up to Christmas. It comes after a Strictly Come Dancing star pulled out of the show as he made a career announcement. This year, Olympic sprinter and Gladiators star Harry Aikines-Aryeetey was the first contestant confirmed for the 2025 line-up earlier on Monday. Harry, known as Nitro on the rebooted Gladiators, previously competed in last year's Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special and described his decision to return as "so nice I just had to do it twice." The first contestant announced to be joining Strictly was Gladiators star Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, also known as Nitro. The former Olympic athlete, who competed in last year's Christmas special, was revealed as a contestant during an episode of Newsround on Monday. Love Island winner Dani Dyer was the second celebrity confirmed for the new series. The reality TV star shared the news on The One Show on Monday night, with her one of three contestants who appeared on the show that evening. Actor Alex Kingston, known for her roles on shows such as Doctor Who and ER, was unveiled as the third celebrity for the new series. She was the second contestant to be interviewed on The One Show earlier this week. Footballer Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was later named as this year's fourth contestant. He was the third and final participant revealed on Monday. Soap star Balvinder Sopal was then the fifth contestant to be revealed as part of the line-up. The actress , known for her role as Suki Panesar-Unwin on EastEnders, was unveiled as part of the line-up with viewers on ITV 's Good Morning Britain earlier this week. It was later announced that TikTok star George Clarke will be competing on the new series of Strictly too. RuPaul's Drag Race UK runner-up La Voix, also known as Christopher Dennis, was unveiled as the seventh celebrity taking part on Wedneday. The news was revealed on the Scott Mills Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2. The Apprentice star Tom Skinner has also been given a spot on the dancefloor, as has actress and model Ellie Goldstein, and rugby star Chris Robshaw will also be taking part. And on Thursday, Geordie Shore legend Vicky Pattison was announced as celebrity number 11 to be taking part. She said: "I'm buzzing like a an old fish but I'm really nervous as well. I've never done anything like this before, I'm opening up to a whole new audience as well. I'm terrified. Can you tell? I'm terrified." Just hours later, Neighbours legend Stefan Dennis was unveiled as part of the lineup. H said: "I'm very excited to be doing something completely and utterly out of my comfort zone but because of that, I'm petrified." He added that British viewers be "sick of" him eventually as Neighbours will also be airing until the end of the year. Second MasterChef contestant cut from series after scandals
It has been announced that another contestant has been edited out of the latest MasterChef series. Following scandals attached to Gregg Wallace and John Torode, it was announced that major editing would be taking place to the final series. This means that many of the jokes from Torode and Wallace have been edited out of the series, and in some cases, entire contestants. In early August, it was announced that one contestant requested to be edited out as they preferred not to participate following the reports concernig the hosts. It has now been announced that yet another contestant has made the same decision to be cut from the show. A spokesperson for the show's production company, Banijay, said: 'One other contributor decided that given recent events they would like not to be included. 'We have of course, accepted their wishes and edited them out of the show.' In July, an independent report into MasterChef upheld 45 complaints against Wallace, including claims of inappropriate sexual language and one of unwelcome physical contact. A racial language allegation against Torode – which he doesn't recall – was also upheld. The pair were swiftly removed from the show, but after a series had already been filmed withe a new batch of contestants. The BBC chose to air the series, as to not ruin the hardwork put in by the contestants. The BBC's statement read in part: 'After careful consideration and consultation with the contestants, we have decided to broadcast the amateur series of MasterChef on BBC One and BBC iPlayer from 6 August. MasterChef is an amazing competition which is life-changing for the amateur chefs taking part. The focus of it has always been their skill and their journey.' The statement added: 'This has not been an easy decision in the circumstances and we appreciate not everyone will agree with it. In showing the series, which was filmed last year, it in no way diminishes our view of the seriousness of the upheld findings against both presenters. 'We have been very clear on the standards of behaviour that we expect of those who work at the BBC or on shows made for the BBC. 'However, we believe that broadcasting this series is the right thing to do for these cooks who have given so much to the process. We want them to be properly recognised and give the audience the choice to watch the series.' A few weeks ago, it was announced that Sarah Shafi, a former contestant in the show, had asked to be removed from the series. She explained why on ITV's Good Morning Britain: 'For me, it didn't feel as faithful to food as I thought it would be, and at the same time, I felt it was uncomfortable around presenters.' Garraway asked if she was referring to Wallace and his controversial comments last year about 'women of a certain age' making complaints against him. More Trending She replied: 'It wasn't a big deal for me. I'm an older woman and a woman of that certain age, and I can kind of spot that creep, and you just go, I'll just get on with it. 'After I left the show, I think the main thing I felt was relief.' The former contestant explained that it 'isn't about her', adding: 'This isn't about a particular experience, although that gave me insight into the taste of that masculine toxicity, and I thought, I don't want to really be part of that.' Football Manager 26 gets a reveal trailer – here's everything to know so far
Football Manager 26 has finally been teased by Sports Interactive after months of silence. The game returns after a shock hiatus, as Football Manager 25 was cancelled by the developer in February earlier this year due to development delays. However, the studio has since shared a 30-second video revealing the new game. – With commentary from Peter Drury, it offered a very first glimpse at the brand new in-game engine, now powered by Unity. On top of that, we got a look at the official Premier League license, included for the very first time in the series. That means all the official PL teams, players, kits and more will be available in the upcoming game. The video finishes with a message saying "guess who's back" along with a first look at the Football Manager 26 logo. For the uninitiated, the game - unsurprisingly - lets you become a football manager, taking minnows from the depths of the footballing pyramid to the Premier League and beyond. Details are thin on the ground, but Football Manager 26 will have all of the updated teams from the 2025/26 season in the leagues it covers around the world. The Premier League license is included in the game for the first time, meaning that all 20 of the official teams will be represented, including kits, logos, player photos and more. The game engine is moving to Unity, and delays in this move are why Football Manager 25 was cancelled back in February. The new match engine seems to offer the game's best-ever graphics. As in previous years, it's likely that Sports Interactive will add a handful of new teams, but this has not yet been confirmed. Can I pre-order Football Manager 26? Football Manager 26 is not yet available to pre-order. Availability usually coincides with the annoucment of a release date. Which platforms can I play Football Manager 26 on?
