Harry Hill: ‘I was absolutely merciless' in pursuit of comedy career
Hill explained that his stepfather's passing made him determined to avoid a similar fate of working his entire life without enjoying retirement.
He attributed his relentless drive in comedy to his demanding medical career, where he often worked 80-100 hours a week.
He said 'I was absolutely merciless' in trying to get bookings: 'It's not the funniest people that get on, it's the pushiest. And I was pushy.'
Hill won the Perrier Award for best newcomer at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 1992 and later went on to create and present Harry Hill's TV Burp on ITV.

Rita Ora teams up with Netflix to secretly record new song for massive series
RITA ORA sure has her fingers in a lot of pies. I can reveal the singer/actress/presenter has recorded a new song for the upcoming second series of Netflix hit Love Is Blind UK. Sources tell me Joy is a powerful track about finding inner peace and is expected to be released in the coming days. Rather than being on her upcoming fourth album, Joy will be a stand-alone song that will debut in a TV trailer for the dating show then drop on Spotify and Amazon Music. A source said: 'It's no secret that Rita loves love so she jumped at the chance to record a track for Love Is Blind UK. Joy is very much a mini side-project rather than being part of the new album. 'The song will be used on the show and be available to stream but there are no plans for a video or to send it to radio.' Honestly, I don't know when Rita finds the time. MARIAH'S PRIDE 'N' JOY 7 7 MARIAH CAREY glittered in front of thousands of fans in four different figure-hugging outfits as she hit the stage to headline Brighton Pride. The American diva arrived in a shiny ombre dress and pink jacket, which featured the phrase 'protect the dolls' on the back, as she pledged her support to the trans community. Later, during her 90-minute set, she changed into another dazzling minidress, as well as a gold shift and floor-length black gown. Mariah told the crowd: 'The LGBTQ+ family, both as a community and as individuals have been here for me for so long. I just want you to know that I'll always, always be there for you.' Mariah Carey, 56, wears FOUR figure-hugging outfits and puts on leggy display as she headlines Brighton Pride The show, which featured hits including Fantasy and her new single Sugar Sweet, topped off a day of festivities, ahead of the second day yesterday which was headlined by Sugababes. Earlier on Saturday, Attitude magazine kicked off the annual event with a party at the i360 tower which was attended by Dame Kelly Holmes, Caity Baser and Rob Rinder. CARDI'S FLOP RAP 7 LOOKS like Cardi B is preparing to go fight or flight in this bird-themed feathered outfit. The rapper looked ready for take-off as she entered the ring to kick off the opening night of the WWE Summerslam 2025 wrestling extravaganza in New Jersey on Saturday. But rather than singing or fighting, Cardi was simply there to launch the event, teasing music from her upcoming second album Am I The Drama? As she strutted to the ring, a new Cardi track was blasted through the stadium, sending fans into a meltdown online. Her long-awaited follow-up to 2018's Invasion Of Privacy is out on September 19. Hope it's worth the wait. GAGA IN TRIBUTE TO OZZY DESPITE being in the middle of a world tour, Lady Gaga is finding time to support others. I'm told she was so moved by the death of Ozzy Osbourne that she sent a huge bouquet to his grieving wife Sharon and the family. The move is a full-circle moment for the two women after Sharon branded the hitmaker an attention-seeker in 2013. That came after Gaga locked horns with her daughter Kelly Osbourne after she criticised the singer for not stopping to greet fans. A source said: 'The flowers must have cost hundreds but Gaga wanted to reach out. 'Gaga has always been a huge fan of Ozzy and the Osbournes – before she was famous she even used to strip to Black Sabbath 's Black Sabbath. "She once told Ozzy – he found it hilarious.' The kind gesture comes after Gaga closed her San Francisco show last month by belting out Ozzy's 1980 hit Crazy Train as a tribute. CHAPPELL SLINKS IN 7 SHE'S one of the biggest stars on the planet, but Chappell Roan was able to slip into Oasis 's latest London gig undetected. The singer, who released new single The Subway last week, was seen in the crowd at Wembley on Saturday – singing away to the hits. Frank Lampard and Nicole Appleton also snubbed a swanky suite to mix with regular fans. OASIS fever is still sweeping the UK. Yesterday the Y Not Festival in Derbyshire was forced to upgrade tribute act Noasis to the main stage. They were due to play an 800-capacity slot but bosses had a rethink after more than double that number of guests saved the slot on their festival app. The Diana Mixtape musical @ Outernet, London ★★★★☆ 7 YOU might think a stage musical about Princess Diana would be sad, yet The Diana Mixtape is anything but. With five world-class drag queens from RuPaul's Drag Race playing the People's Princess while singing classics from Kylie, Lady Gaga and Billie Eilish, it's utterly joyous from start to finish. The crowd at Outernet London lapped it up. A shout out also needs to go to Hear'Say's Noel Sullivan and actress Lucinda Lawrence, for their Charles and Camilla romp to Dua Lipa 's Physical. Hilarious. Greatest Showman star Keala Settle brought even more fun as Elizabeth II, but ultimately it was the queens who shone brightest. It's on at Outernet until Sunday then The Lowry, Salford, from August 19-21. OLIVIA RODRIGO's 2021 album Sour is still breaking records. The release has become the first album on Spotify to have four songs with more than two billion streams each. Traitor, Drivers License, Deja Vu and Good 4 U have all passed the milestone. Not bad for an album the US star wrote when she was just 17.

Porn star Bonnie Blue wants to host sex education TV show after bedding 1000s of men
PORN star Bonnie Blue has been discussing the possibility of doing a sex education TV series following the surge of interest in her recent Channel 4 documentary. At the launch of the programme, 1,000 Men And Me, she told event host Anna Richardson she wants to front a show to help men and women improve their love lives. She said: 'Everyone wants different things, everyone has different requirements. 'I know from sleeping with thousands of people everyone wants it differently, so they [men] know not to assume that every woman wants it the same way. If they're going too fast or if they're being too rough, speak up. 'You've got a voice. Tell them you don't want it like that, tell them how you want it.' 1,000 Men And Me centred on Bonnie's claim to have had sex with 1,057 men in just one day in an attempt to set a world record. We told how Ashley Banjo makes an unlikely cameo — in a photo with Bonnie, as her mum recalls her passion for dance as a youngster. Racy dating show The show has caused a stir since it aired last week — and continues to, via Channel 4's catch-up service. But shocked businesses Visa, Cawston Press and Smirnoff have demanded the broadcaster remove their adverts from the programme, saying it does not fit their values. At the show launch in London there seemed a genuine respect between Bonnie and Anna. Humble Bonnie insisted she was a performer and a businesswoman but claimed: 'I didn't join this industry to say, 'I want to change the world'. I'm not the world educator.' Anna replied: 'But in a way, you are.' It's no surprise Anna is so open-minded, given she saw plenty of nudity while hosting C4's Naked Attraction for eight years, before the racy dating show was, sadly, axed last year. Perhaps they could team up on any new sex education project — which would probably end up on C4 too, of course. 5 LIZ'S GRAVE MISTAKE LIZ HURLEY sees her coffin turned into a treasure chest in a new trailer for her upcoming Channel 4 show The Inheritance. The clip sees her lying in rest at a funeral in a posh house where loved ones suddenly start grasping at her jewellery and other valuables that surround the body. 5 5 5 Liz then opens her eyes and says: 'If you haven't noticed, darlings, I'm dead, which means my entire estate is up for grabs'. The many mourners then take her on her word and start looting the entire house she's in, ripping down paintings, pottery, even crystal chandeliers and all while Rob Rinder looks on with a knowing smile. He and Liz host the new reality contest, which airs soon and features 13 contestants summoned to a grand stately home. They then have to compete for part of a fortune left in the will of a deceased, but very glamorous, benefactor, played by Hurley. Overseeing the stipulations of her will during the 12 episodes is her executor and trusted legal counsel, in the form of real life barrister-turned TV presenter, Rob. Created by the team behind Traitors UK and Squid Game: The Challenge, it is said to be 'a game of wit, willpower, persuasion and betrayal.' Sounds dead good. CELEBS TAKE POP AT MAT GAVIN & Stacey star Mat Horne has lifted the lid on bizarre encounters with two celebs as he minded his own business on the street. He said he was almost run over by one pop star and playfully heckled by another. At an event last week, Mat revealed: 'I was crossing the road. This car screeched to a halt in front of me and driving it was Harry Styles.' Recalling a different incident, he went on: 'I was crossing a zebra crossing in London and someone shouted 'You come up to see me?' out of their car window, which was a reference to The Catherine Tate Show. 'It was a quote from the Nan character and I played the grandson. 'I turned around and it was Robbie Williams.' Take that, then, Mat!

Motorhead fans remember Lemmy Kilmister at music event in Burslem
Since the statue of Motorhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister was unveiled in his hometown in May, it has become a point of pilgrimage for fans from across the Sunday, rock fans gathered in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, to celebrate his legacy and help raise money for a project to turn the Queen's Hall into a 900-seater concert venue to be renamed Kilmister included live music, food trucks, merchandise stalls, an art exhibition, retro clothing and pre-loved record stalls, as well as a motorbike died almost 10 years ago, on 28 December 2015, in Los Angeles, just four days after his 70th birthday. Artist Lea Williams was among those who attended Sunday's event."It's amazing to actually be here and see so many fans coming for the same reason - all united for the love of Lemmy - and also for Ozzy," she Williams said the pair were both there in spirit. Birmingham legend and Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne died on 22 July."Lemmy and Ozzy go together like salt and pepper," she told BBC Radio added that the statue had put Burslem "back on the map". The statue's creator, Andy Edwards, was behind this weekend's spectacle and said his sculpture had been exactly what the area needed, adding that it drew people to the area from miles around."Lemmy is to Burslem what Shakespeare is to Stratford," he said. "Today proves that."He said the day had been "absolute chaos", but that was "fantastic – it's what we want".He added that the Queen's Hall had a lot of potential, with a live music venue alongside a music school, as well as the possibility that EMI's Abbey Road Studios may consider opening a recording studio there."All the elements are here," Mr Edwards said.
