Former Sri Lankan cricketer Sachithra Senanayake prosecuted for match-fixing
The 40-year-old, who has refuted the charges against him, was indicted before the high court in the southern city of Hambantota. He is the first national-level player to be prosecuted under the country's recently introduced anti-corruption law, according to PTI.
Senanayake is accused of influencing two Lanka Premier League players to fix matches. He was arrested in 2023, but is currently on bail.

According to local media reports, he had approached another national player, Tharindu Ratnayake, who was playing for the Colombo Kings at the time.
"Senanayake is also alleged to have contacted two other cricketers participating in the inaugural LPL in 2020 via telephone from Dubai, attempting to persuade them to engage in match-fixing," a report in the Sri Lankan 'Daily Mirror' stated.

Senanayake last played for Sri Lanka in 2016 and has made 74 international appearances. He also played eight matches for the Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2023.
In the same year, he was also banned from travelling overseas by a local court.
According to AFP, Senanayake could be convicted and face a maximum of 10 years in jail, a fine of up to 100 million rupees ($333,000), or both.
In February, Bangladesh's Shohely Akhter received a ban of five years from all cricket matches after the International Cricket Council (ICC) found her guilty of match-fixing.
She breached five provisions of the ICC Anti-Corruption Code, becoming the first female cricketer to be banned for corruption. The off-spinner, who represented Bangladesh in 13 T20Is and two ODIs, admitted to all the offences.

Responsibility is not just in terms of runs to be scored or wickets to be picked, it's about the role in the team and how you can create a bigger impact. So I did have that in mind. Also, with regard to my preparation, nothing changes. Be it ₹20 lakh or ₹20 crore, preparation won't change. You have to do double the hard work as the previous year, regardless of the money. That day was very hectic but, post that, things were kind of back to normal.' Many fans questioned the ₹23.75 crore figure, piling on unnecessary pressure. His response is simple: 'People who had these questions are not even on my contact list. So why do I have to even think about what they are thinking? It's my life, my game, my career. And it's my team that has chosen to spend so much on me. So these things don't phase me... there are a lot of eyes on you, but it's important to know what to pay heed to. People who have had a direct impact on my life, I am answerable to only them.' Support From KKR Management According to Iyer, KKR shielded him from much of the noise: 'They know the magnitude of it, obviously from experience... They have made a team, they wanted the team to do well, and I am part of a team. And it is my duty to do well for them. Unfortunately, it didn't happen. But my aim is always to try and win as many games as possible for KKR.' He also sees the price tag as recognition of his journey: 'I would like to think so. But it's not about just the money, it's about where I fit in their scheme of things. Venky sir once told me something, which I felt made a lot of sense. He said, 'At the end of the day, you are given 120 units to build a team. Once the team is built, it doesn't matter how many units you have spent on what. It is a team that has been made now, that's it.'

FC Goa edge past Al Seeb to enter AFC Champions League 2 group stage
Margao, Aug 13 (PTI) Indian Super League side FC Goa qualified for the AFC Champions League 2 group stage with an impressive 2-1 win over Oman's Al Seeb Club in the preliminary round here on Wednesday. Dejan Drazic (24′) opened the scoring with a sublime chip before Javier Siverio (52′) doubled the advantage for Goa. Al Seeb, the 2022 AFC Cup champions, threatened a comeback when Nasser Al-Rawahi (60′) pulled one back, but the Gaurs held firm. FC Goa thus join fellow ISL team Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the continental tournament's group stage. The Mariners had secured a direct berth by clinching the 2024-25 Indian Super League Shield. Al Seeb began on the front foot, forcing early defensive heroics from Pol Moreno in just the second minute, while Zahir Al Aghbari's close-range effort was blocked. The home side took time to settle and could have broken the deadlock in the ninth minute when Drazic broke free on the left but with only the keeper to beat, the midfielder's soft shot was easily collected by Ahmed Al Rawahi. Al Rawahi was in the thick of things again for Al Seeb in the 23rd minute when his timely tackle opened up space to set up Abdul Aziz Al Muqbali, whose curling effort was parried away by FC Goa keeper Hrithik Tiwari. But FC Goa found the net a minute later as Borja Herrera's pinpoint long pass found Drazic on the left, with the midfielder evading Al Rawahi's challenge before delicately chipping the ball over Ahmed Al Khamisi and into the back of the net. The Indian Super League side stayed on top of things in the second half with Drazic outmuscling the Al Seeb defenders to surge into the box before forcing Al Rawahi to palm away his stinging shot in the 52nd minute. The momentum saw FC Goa extend their lead moments later when Herrera's cross off a corner floated into the box perfectly for Siverio to rise above Al Rawahi for a headed finish. Al Seeb reduced the deficit at the hour mark through Nasser Al Rawahi's strike from close range off Ali Al Busaidi's cutback but that was to be it as FC Goa booked their spot in the Group Stage. ED questions Suresh Raina for 8 hours in illegal online betting app case
New Delhi, Aug 13 (PTI) The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday questioned former India cricketer Suresh Raina for more than eight hours in an alleged money laundering case linked to an illegal online betting app, official sources said. Raina (38) was seen interacting with CISF personnel and ED staff outside the agency's office in central Delhi before marking his attendance at around 11 am. He left the agency office around 8 pm. The federal probe agency recorded Raina's statement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) as part of its investigation linked to a sports betting application named 1xBet, the sources said. Raina, who played 18 Tests, 226 ODIs, and 78 T20Is for India, is understood to have been linked to the app through certain endorsements. The ED wanted to understand his links with the app, any endorsement fee earned and the mode of communication between the two parties, according to the sources. The agency recently called representatives of Google and Meta for questioning as part of its probe. It also conducted multi-state searches on Tuesday in connection with a similar investigation against an online betting app named Parimatch. The agency is probing multiple such cases involving illegal betting apps, which allegedly duped numerous people and investors worth crores of rupees or evaded a huge amount of taxes. According to estimates by market analysis firms and probe agencies, there are about 22 crore Indian users of various such online betting apps, out of which half (about 11 crore) are regular users. The online betting app market in India is worth over USD 100 billion, which is growing at a rate of 30 per cent, according to experts. The government last month told Parliament that it has issued 1,524 orders from 2022 till June 2025 to block online betting and gambling platforms. Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Jitin Prasada, told Lok Sabha in a written reply that the Directorate General of GST Intelligence headquarters is empowered as an appropriate government agency under the Information Technology Act, 2000, and the IGST Act to direct intermediaries to block unregistered online money gaming platforms, including offshore online money gaming platforms, violating the IGST Act. He said the suppliers of online money gaming are also being regulated under the Integrated Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017 (IGST Act). 'Under the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution, 'betting and gambling' is a state subject (entry 34 of the List II). Therefore, as per the provisions of Article 246 read with Article 162 of the Constitution, state legislatures have the power to legislate on matters related to betting and gambling," Prasada said. The minister also said the states and Union territories are primarily responsible for prevention, detection, investigation and prosecution of crimes, including action against illegal betting and gambling. 'The Central government supplements the efforts of the states/Union territories through advisories and financial assistance under various schemes for capacity building of their LEA," Prasada said.
