How ‘Materialists' Finds True Love in New York City

How ‘Materialists' Finds True Love in New York City

Yahoo6 hours ago

Location work is not usually considered one of the 'creative' departments on a film. Of course, they work with the director and the production designer to find spaces that will work for specific scenes that can't or shouldn't be shot on a set, but theirs is the unsexy work of negotiating contracts with owners, securing all the needed permits, and handling the crew's impact on locations. Yet director Celine Song credits a great deal of the push-pull yearning of her second feature, 'Materialists,' to that location work.
New York City is not the easiest place to shoot, but it was important to Song for the film to reflect the realities of what it's like to live in New York. The apartments and streets in which the characters fight and make up and make out are characters in and of themselves. 'Location management in this film is a creative position. We were talking pretty creatively — my DP, my line producer, my production designer, and my location manager — we're all trying to solve problems together,' Song told IndieWire on an episode of the Filmmaker Toolkit podcast.

Location manager Joe Mullaney and his team even helped Song realize something about the characters that was embedded in the script, but no one had quite articulated. 'Joe was the first to notice — because he has to permit every time a character smokes — that Lucy [Dakota Johnson] never smokes with Harry [Pedro Pascal]. She only smokes with John [Chris Evans]. And of course eventually the actors figured that out, too, but Joe was the first,' Song said. 'It's a very specific perspective.'
The perspective was an extremely important one for 'Materialists,' which is so specific to New York and yet contains a much wider historical scope. It begins with and then later checks in on a very early, prehistoric marriage, after all, and Song and Mullaney were delighted to find a corner of Central Park where a bridge could echo the sense of a cave, and visually merge the two storylines at the end. ' It requires Joe's lifetime, his whole career, of building trust in New York City. He needs to have a good reputation for being somebody who can be trusted to give you their space. So I'm relying so much on his work even before my movies, you know?' Song said.
But something that pervades both of Song's movies, 'Materialists' and 'Past Lives' is how living in New York forces the characters to move through the echoes of millions of other people's lives. Visually, that sense was something no amount of B-Roll or establishing drone footage could create. The characters had to be in and of the city. It's part of the romance Song wanted to create.
'Public spaces in New York are the most romantic places, because you know that you're not the first couple to have an argument there. Like, [on] every corner of New York City, someone has peed there, someone has slept there, someone has had a huge argument there, and someone has kissed there,' Song said. 'We're shooting in New York City, which is expensive and difficult — just like living in New York City. But [it's] romantic and rewarding — just like New York City. We were sort of acknowledging, well, if you're doing it, you might as well do it.'
That meant going all out on streets and stoops, especially in relation to John. His apartment isn't exactly conducive to heartfelt conversations, but Lucy's isn't that much better, either. And the fact that they can't be fully comfortable or private in the spaces they live changes how the characters move through the world and desire each other.
''Materialists' is about the way that the cynic and the romantic are in conversation, and in a bit of a tussle,' Song said. 'New York City is exactly that. To live in New York City, you have to be a romantic because the quality of living is not high enough for it to be possible for anybody who is not romantic in some way… but on the other hand, part of surviving in New York City is that you have to have a healthy dose of cynicism, too. [The city] just encapsulates that amazing balance. [So] it was always fundamentally a thing that we wanted to shoot in New York City.'

Costco's Newest Product Is Generating Tons Of Mixed Reviews — Here's My Brutally Honest Opinion After Trying It

Costco has a knack for spotting a food trend the moment it tips from niche to mainstream and then rolling out a tray that feeds half the neighborhood. The Chicken Street Tacos showed up just as weeknight taco trucks became a thing. A Frozen Strawberry Lemonade slid into the food court the second every drive-thru debuted its slushy version. Now the warehouse has set its sights on birria — the slow-braised, chile-rich beef you dunk in consommé until your fingertips match the sunset. The online buzz was mixed before I even unboxed it. On TikTok, @yungfoodbeast shows off a dramatic cheese pull and calls the tacos 'fire." While @photogami (aka The Sushi Guy) takes a more hands-on approach, he dips each taco in the consommé for extra moisture, sets them in a lightly oiled skillet, then presses and flips until the tortillas pick up that deep-orange quesabirria crust and the cheese melts right back where it belongs. He's into the beef, tender, well-seasoned — no complaints there. But he still raises an eyebrow at the total price, skillet success or not. I found the tray right next to the Chicken Street Tacos, and it drew a small crowd the moment I paused for a photo. Sydney Martin One shopper even tapped my shoulder to see if I'd tried it yet. Field research nearly turned into a jump scare, but her curiosity told me everything about the aisle's vibe: cautious excitement and a little sticker shock. Before I committed, I zoomed in on the shelf tag: Birria Taco Meal Kit — $6.49 per pound, eight tacos, Jack cheese, corn tortillas, Spanish-style rice, plus a cup of consommé. Sydney Martin Costco doesn't hide the math, but that per-pound price can feel friendly until you realize the tray weighs almost four pounds, which puts you north of $25 the moment it lands in your cart. Credit where it's due: The packaging team makes this feel like a true crowd-pleaser. Still, I found myself doing the quiet Costco math in my head, wondering whether this was a clever illusion or a genuine bulk bargain. Sticker shock continued at home, so out came the scale. The kit weighs 3.89 pounds. All eight tacos together weigh just under two pounds. Sydney Martin My camera had trouble capturing the digital scale numbers, but the official weight was 28.30 ounces. When I opened one and weighed only the filling, it was roughly two ounces. Add it up, and you're looking at a total of about a pound of beef. Sydney Martin The rest of the weight is 17 ounces of consommé, 15.9 ounces of Spanish-style rice, and two lime wedges. Sydney Martin In dollars, roughly $11.50 pays for the tacos; the remaining $13-plus covers broth, rice, and citrus. Suddenly $6.49 a pound feels less friendly. Cooking was by the book: tacos straight on a sheet pan (I skipped parchment — poor choice) at 375°F for 20 minutes. Halfway through, white rivers of cheese were already bonding to the pan. Sydney Martin While the tacos baked, the consommé warmed on the stove, and the rice took a quick two-minute spin in the microwave. Sydney Martin Taste time. The beef? Tender, well-seasoned, still juicy after the oven stint, and excellent once dunked in the broth. The tortillas? Dry going in, tough coming out. A skillet crisp could help, but that's not what the box asks for. The consommé is flavorful, warm, and lightly spicy, but realizing seven of my dollars floated away in that pot dampens the glow. The rice lands squarely in the filler category: dry, lightly seasoned, and easy to ignore once the tacos disappear. Then there's the Chicken Street Taco comparison. That tray costs about $15, makes a dozen tacos, and throws in slaw, salsa, and crema, which works out to roughly $1.25 a taco. The birria kit costs north of three dollars per taco, offers fewer servings, and arrives without extras. Feed more than three hungry people, and eight tacos vanish in a blink. Sydney Martin Verdict: flavorful filling and chewy shells, but a premium price. If Costco softens the tortillas or trims a few dollars, I'll happily buy it again. Until then, the Chicken Street Tacos stay in the cart, and real birria cravings will send me to my favorite truck. Have you tried Costco's birria kit? Did the tortillas break your heart, or am I underselling them? Drop your thoughts in the comments! Meanwhile, I'll keep an eye on the prepared-foods case (and that price tag) to see whether this tray sticks around or drifts off when the next trend rolls in. Got a serious craving for tacos now? Jenna Bush Hager Finally Debuts 'Strange' New Bob Haircut On ‘Today': 'I Feel A Little Embarrassed'

Today viewers finally got to see Jenna Bush Hager's exciting new look after the daytime host underwent a dramatic transformation live on the show, all thanks to Leslie Bibb's hairstylist. Like many other White Lotus fans, Bush Hager was inspired by Bibb's signature bob, cut and styled by celebrity hairstylist Chris McMillan. So, they had McMillan stop by the show Monday to cut Bush Hager's hair during the live broadcast. Bush Hager debuted the new look during Tuesday's (June 17) broadcast, during which she admitted she's 'feeling a little strange.' 'You know that '90s movie Single White Female where you try to copy somebody to such an extent. You made this hairstyle so famous and then I used your hairstylist to get the same haircut and I'm feeling a little strange,' she told Bibb. Much like she did during the haircut, Bibb gave Bush Hager an empowering pep talk. 'No, you don't look strange. You look sexy, and powerful, and glamorous. And I kept saying it yesterday, you're a badass! You look so great!' the actress told Bush Hager. 'It's a big deal to do that.' Bush Hager went on to admit that she's feeling 'a little embarrassed' by all of the attention she's gotten for the haircut. She even shared that there were a lot of 'fake tears' and criticisms from her children when they saw her new haircut. 'Are those real tears? Your children are monsters! They're monsters,' Bibb jokingly responded. She later asked Bush Hager if she felt 'lighter' after getting the haircut. 'I felt lighter. There's a lot of change happening and I feel a little embarrassed by the attention. And I know the people who work for me are like, 'Mother loves attention,' but I felt a little embarrassed,' the Today host admitted. Just before getting her haircut on Monday's show, Bush Hager joked that the new look will help her shed all of the changes that happened this year – including, for example, Hoda Kotb's shocking retirement and exit from Today. 'I've been through change, I'm gonna wash the Hoda right out of my hair!' she joked, before quickly adding, 'I love her and she's still my friend, but maybe it's time for a whole new look.' Today with Jenna & Friends airs on weekdays at 10/9c on NBC.

Justin Baldoni Drops Taylor Swift Extortion Claims, Blake Lively's Lawyers Respond

Justin Baldoni's legal team has dropped its subpoena against Taylor Swift, which previously claimed Blake Lively's team was trying to extort the music star. The subpoena dropping was confirmed by a spokesperson for Lively (via TheWrap), with Lively's legal team saying they were 'pleased' that Baldoni's team stopped a 'harassing' probe into Swift and Lively's relationship. 'We supported the efforts of Taylor's team to quash these inappropriate subpoenas directed to her counsel and we will continue to stand up for any third party who is unjustly harassed or threatened in the process,' the spokesperson said. 'The Baldoni and Wayfarer team have tried to put Taylor Swift, a woman who has been an inspiration for tens of millions across the globe, at the center of this case since day one,' the statement continued. 'Exploiting Taylor Swift's celebrity was the original plan in Melissa Nathan's scenario planning document, and it continues to this day. Faced with having to justify themselves in federal court, they folded. At some point they will run out of distractions from the actual claims of sexual harassment and retaliation they are facing.' In a letter filed in court last week (via THR) from Baldoni's lawyer Bryan Freedman, Baldoni's team alleges that Michael Gottlieb, who is representing Lively, reached out to the legal firm that represents Swift, Venable. According to the letter, Gottlieb 'demanded that Ms. Swift release a statement of support for Ms. Lively, intimating that, if Ms. Swift refused to do so, private text messages of a personal nature' would be released. Freedman's letter went on to say that Swift's legal team responded to the request in at least one written message. The letter Freedman entered into court is looking to have those communications released, claiming that they prove that Lively's team is essentially trying to intimidate a witness in Baldoni and Lively's ongoing legal battle. In response to the letter, Gottlieb said that the accusations are 'categorically false,' and that the use of anonymous sources is 'cowardly' from Freedman.
