Beloved Aussie singer excited for lead role in musical

Perth Now25-04-2025
Casey Donovan has landed her first lead role in a musical, and what better character to score than one played by Whoopi Goldberg.
Sister Act the Musical opens at Crown Theatre on Saturday night, where it is set to bring the antics of the 1992 film to life on stage.
The Sydney-born singer and actress stars as Deloris Van Cartier alongside two other Aussie talents, Genevieve Lemon as Mother Superior and Rhonda Burchmore as Sister Mary Lazarus.
'It's been such a great show to be a lead in. Dolores is such a fun, witty, front-footed character. She really is just this ball of energy,' she said.
'I pay a lot of respect to Whoopi on stage, but the great thing about musical theatre is making a character your own. The Sydney-born singer and actress stars as Deloris Van Cartier. Credit: Jackson Flindell / Jackson Flindell / The West Aust
'Whoopi's got these beautiful little moments in the movie where she gets that cheeky little smile, or she's up to something, so I've tried to bring that into the musical theatre world.'
Donovan said the people of Perth are sure to be up dancing in the aisles with the award-winning musical featuring original music by Tony and eight-time Oscar award-winner Alan Menken (Disney's Aladdin, Enchanted, The Little Mermaid).
'I know a lot of people are like, but it's not the music from the movie. I was like, no, it's so much better,' Donovan said of Menken's work.
As the last stop of the tour, Donovan encouraged the people of Perth 'to come along, grab a ticket, have some fun, let your hair down and, let's all raise our voice together'.

Plateful Perth: World's most esteemed mixologists descend on Perth for Cocktail Weekend

Perth's gin-credible cocktail scene is heating up. Some of the CBD's most prestigious bars — Terrarium, Mechanics Institute, Bar Lafayette and Ritz Carlton's Songbird — will be graced by a cohort of the globe's most esteemed mixologists as part of Plateful Perth's Cocktail Weekend next weekend. Songbird will collaborate with Singapore's Sago House, one of Asia's best bars, with guest bartenders, Naz Zurmi and Ronan Keilthy, taking over on Friday evening. Songbird venue supervisor Kristen Sly said punters could expect 'good cocktails and good vibes'. 'It's going to be an awesome opportunity to show off cocktails, not just from Australia, but also from Asia,' she said. Terrarium and Mechanics Institute will team up with Sydney's Bar DEMO and A Little Cooler, respectively, while Bar Lafayette will join forces with Hobart's Rude Boy, using native ingredients to serve up Aussie-inspired cocktails. 'It's almost like we're transporting people to Hobart without needing to take a flight for six or seven hours,' Bar Lafayette's Marco Manca said. Ms Sly said she was proud of Perth's booming cocktail community. 'Perth's cocktail scene is growing, and it's only getting stronger,' she said. 'I think there's a demand for craft cocktails and showing off what creativity Perth can bring to the market, but I also think that classic cocktails are still pretty popular. 'We sell so many espresso martinis and spicy margaritas, but it's also awesome to show off some creative spice in those cocktails too.' Mr Manca described cocktails as 'more than just a liquid' and said he was excited to show off Bar Lafayette's creative flair. 'Especially now that cocktails are so expensive, you want (the bartender) to care about the details,' he said. 'I just want to bring a little more to the community, I want to raise the expectation of what a cocktail is — it's more than just a liquid, it's what's in the details. 'Our mission is to make classic cocktails with a twist, so they can drink something familiar, but also unexpected.' Plateful of Perth's Cocktail Weekend runs from Friday to Saturday. The post also included pictures of the trio beaming as they pose on the rocky shoreline of a picturesque beach as Bobbi caresses her mum's growing belly. Well wishes and congratulatory messages from well-known personalities flooded the comments section, including one from Perth influencer Em Davies, who said: 'Darling!!! 😭😭😭😭 congratulations!!!!!' 'Shut the front door 😍 I'm crying. Congratulations guys ❤️,' Stephanie Miller, Australian entrepreneur and founder of health and wellness app KIC, said. Fisher and Chloe welcomed their first born child, Bobbi, to the world in June last year, which the couple described at the time as the 'happiest day of the year'. Four years earlier in 2020 the pair tied the knot in Bali with the company of their closest friends and family. In January, Fisher graced the Wildlands stage in Perth to perform an hour-long set as the headline act for the popular music festival. The wildly popular DJ took out the second spot in Triple J's 2018 Hottest 100 with his hit track Losing It.
