Cricket-rugby spat over Ebbw Vale's Eugene Cross Park

The Steelmen will play in the final of the inaugural SRC after fighting back to beat the Drovers 29-28.
It comes after they were granted use of Eugene Cross Park for the last-four encounter at the expense of Ebbw Vale CC's second XI.
One end of the rugby pitch overlaps with the cricket outfield, with a previous fixture clash meaning that the Steelmen had played their quarter-final game late on a Saturday night seven days earlier.
With the semi-final being shown live on S4C and kicking off at 12.15pm, a chalkboard was placed outside the pavilion stating: 'Good luck Llandovery from everyone at EV Cricket Club'.

'Ebbw Vale Cricket Club wishes to address recent events that transpired regarding the decision made about play on our home ground today,' read a statement.
'Whilst we remain disappointed with the ruling, which has impacted our club and its members, we would like to clarify that the sign placed outside our establishment was done so without our knowledge or consent.
'This sign does not reflect the views or opinions of Ebbw Vale Cricket Club. Upon learning of its presence, we took immediate action to have it removed.
'We appreciate the understanding and support of our community during this time and remain committed to promoting the spirit of cricket and sportsmanship at our club.'
The Steelmen will play in the final of SRC either against Cardiff in the capital or Newport at Eugene Cross Park.
Thankfully, the match date of Sunday, May 17 will avoid a clash with senior cricket if it's a Gwent derby in Ebbw Vale.

Ex-Hearts boss emerges as next manager contender at rival as McInnes comparison made

Robbie Neilson has reportedly declared his interest in taking charge at Motherwell after the former Hearts manager was described as a potential 'safe as houses' appointment for the Fir Park club. BBC Sport have reported the former Hearts boss is keen to return to the dugout with the Steelmen and have claimed Neilson's CV has been submitted to club chairman Kyrk Macmillan. The 44-year-old has been out of work since leaving USL Championship club Tampa Bay Rowdies in April 2025 but has spoken of his desire to get back into management ahead of the new season. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Motherwell have been without a manager since Michael Wimmer left his position with the Steelmen last month after citing 'family reasons' as the reason for his decision and has now returned to Germany to take charge of third tier club Jahn Regensburg. The BBC report says a three-man sub-committee of Motherwell's executive board 'draw up a shortlist, conduct interviews and make their managerial recommendation'. Chairman Kyrk Macmillan, chief executive Brian Caldwell and digital marketing chief executive Greg Anderson will play integral roles in appointing a successor to Wimmer as they look to improve on last season's eighth place finish. 'They might not be too concerned' Former Falkirk and Dundee striker Rory Loy has told discussed the possibility of Neilson taking charge at Hearts in the near future and believes the appointment would mirror Hearts' decision to appointed Derek McInnes as their new manager. Loy described the situation following Wimmer's departure as 'quite rare' and insisted the Steelmen won't be concerned shunning a 'safe as houses' appointment and 'going a bit more leftfield again' after they appointed ex Austria Wien manager Wimmer earlier this year. "You look at Hearts, appointing Derek McInnes is probably as safe as houses in terms of the risk involved," Loy told the BBC's Scottish Football Podcast. "I think Neilson is pretty similar for Motherwell. I don't like the cliches of 'he knows the league' and 'he knows the players', but it is relevant to an extent. And one thing he has had is success. Whether Hearts fans enjoyed how he played or his personality or how he came across, he had a level of success where they were consistently finishing in good positions in the league. The difference is, and it's quite rare, Wimmer wasn't actually sacked. Motherwell maybe like what they did and could see where it was going, so they might not be too concerned about going a bit more leftfield again." Sam Scarfe signs new Dragons deal after Pontypool exploits

The 21-year-old enjoyed a strong campaign in Super Rygbi Cymru with Pontypool, making 14 appearances for the play-off quarter-finalists. Scarfe, who made his Dragons debut in his old position of flanker at Glasgow in February 2024 because of an injury crisis, enjoyed a solitary outing for Filo Tiatia's side against Montpellier in the Challenge Cup clash in Newport. The combative forward has agreed fresh terms and is now looking to push Elliot Dee, Brodie Coghlan, James Benjamin and Oli Burrows for action next season. Scarfe said: 'I've played lots of minutes and learnt a lot from Pooler this year with the help of top players and coaches, which has been great for me. 'Dragons is my home club and I want to represent the badge as much as possible. The club is in a good place so it would be great to get the minutes down at Rodney Parade. 'Filo (Tiatia) has helped me a lot this year in understanding the game in a different way and seeing the opportunities available. I've also enjoyed picking the brains of our experienced senior boys as I continue to develop.' Sam Scarfe crashing over for Pontypool (Image: NCR Photography) Scarfe, who came through at Penallta, provides the Dragons with a different option at the heart of the front row thanks to his back-row background. 'Sam converted to hooker from seven about four or five four years ago,' said forwards Coach Sam Hobbs. 'He was a very good seven and his body type is suited to being a modern-day physical hooker. 'With Pontypool, he played a huge amount of rugby in the Championship, which was a tough education, but now in the SRC he's become a dominant force there and an outstanding prospect winning numerous player-of-the-match awards. 'I'm excited and believe next year will be a big season for Sam. His contact area is his superstrength and he's developed his ball carrying while his set-piece is going really well.' Head coach Tiatia added: 'We've been pleased with Sam's progress and the minutes he has also been able to secure for Pontypool in the SRC. 'He's a hard-working young man who wants to keep improving, so we look forward to his continued development in our senior environment.' Scarfe is one of the Dragons' many promising prospects who will back up the experienced figures in the squad next season. Centre Joe Westwood, flanker/lock Ryan Woodman and hooker Brodie Coghlan grew in influence last season, while centre Harri Ackerman would have were it not for injury. Full-back Huw Anderson, scrum-halves Che Hope and Morgan Lloyd, lock Barny Langton-Cryer and tighthead Luke Yendle got more opportunities while there were debuts for wing Harry Rees-Weldon, fly-half Harri Ford, props Dylan Kelleher-Griffiths and Owain James, lock Nick Thomas and back row forward Evan Minto. The aim will be to balance more Dragons chances with learning in the middle for Newport, Ebbw Vale and Pontypool in SRC.

Jordan McGhee unveiled as Motherwell player after Dundee exit

Jordan McGhee has completed his move to Motherwell after his six years at Dundee came to an end. Popular at Dens Park, McGhee played a key role in two promotions including the Championship title-winning season in 2023. However, family reasons have seen him make the switch to Premiership rivals Motherwell where he has signed a two-year deal. The Steelmen also have the option of a further year extension. The player posted a short message on social media with the simple emojis of an orange heart and home. McGhee's final season at Dens Park saw him score the club's Goal of the Season, one of two strikes in a memorable 4-2 win at rivals Dundee United. He was also the Dee Player's Player of the Year in 2019/20 and scored 21 goals in 197 appearances for the Dark Blues.
