Real Madrid Femenino beat Barcelona for first-ever Clasico win at 19th attempt
Real Madrid Feminino made history on Sunday by beating rivals Barcelona in a Clasico for the first time at the 19th attempt.
The 3-1 away victory saw Madrid close the gap to Barcelona at the top of the table to four points, keeping the Liga F title race alive as Madrid seek their first league title in the women's game.
Barcelona had been victorious in all 18 previous meetings entering Sunday's fixture. Alba Redondo — who joined Madrid from Levante in July 2024 — opened the scoring in the first half before Caroline Graham Hansen levelled things up after the break.
Jana Fernandez thought she had given Barcelona the lead in the 81st minute but the goal was controversially ruled out. Alexia Putellas' ball into the box came off the head of Madrid defender Yasmim, before Fernandez ran in behind the defence to fire home. The goal was disallowed however, and the bewildered Barcelona players surrounded referee Olatz Rivera Olmedo in protest.
Substitute Caroline Weir then put Madrid ahead six minutes later before the Scotland international scored her second to seal the win deep into stoppage time as the weather worsened at the Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium.
The result caps off a memorable week for Madrid after defeating Women's Super League side Arsenal 2-0 on Tuesday to put them on the brink of their first ever Champions League semi-final.
Alberto Toril's side return to action with a trip to London on Wednesday where they take on Arsenal in the quarter-final second leg.
Barcelona will also have one eye on the Champions League semi-finals after comfortably beating Wolfsburg 4-1 on Wednesday. They play the second leg against the German side on Thursday.
