Huge 2.8-hectare 'Demon Slayer' anime rice paddy art project planned, Tanjiro will be eaten
"Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train" turned out to have the momentum of a runaway locomotive at the box office. So suffice it to say that the next "Demon Slayer" anime movie, subtitled "Infinity Castle," is going to be a very big deal when it releases at theaters in Japan this summer. And to gear up for that very big deal, there's some very big Demon Slayer public art planned. However, this gigantic depiction of protagonist Tanjiro isn't going to be an oversized poster or skyscraper projection mapping, and is instead going to be made out of rice.
Yes the town of Gyoda, located about an hour north of downtown Tokyo, has chosen Tanjiro as their muse for the city's annual rice paddy art project. You might be wondering how you turn a rice paddy into art, and the trick is to plant different strains of rice in a carefully determined pattern, based on the color different stalks take on as they grow, so that each one becomes a purposeful part of a mosaic-like whole. It's a technique that lends itself especially well to Tanjiro and his iconic checkerboard-pattern costume, since rice stalks range in color from light green to dark, almost-black brown, like we saw when Gyoda showed off its "Dragon Quest" rice paddy art a few years back.
Gyoda isn't the only town in Japan that does rice paddy art, but it does have the official Guinness World Record for the largest rice paddy artwork. The exact length and width of the rice Tanjiro haven't been announced, but the organizers say it will cover an area of 28,000 square meters, or 2.8 hectares if you feel agricultural units are the most appropriate way to measure it.

The "Demon Slayer" rice paddy art should reach its most beautiful coloring in late July, right around "Infinity Castle's" July 18 release date.
As you can probably guess, the precision nature of the planting means that it's not something that can be entrusted to machinery. Rice paddy art has to be planted by hand, and to that end Gyoda is looking for "Demon Slayer" fans and/or rice enthusiasts interested in volunteering to help. Organizers are seeking a total of 300 people to plant on June 14, gathering at 8:30 a.m. and working until 'the work is finished,' with applications being accepted between now and April 25 online here. There's no pay or participation expense involved, but you will get a sack of rice mailed to you in December after the rice is harvested, making this an opportunity to not only make anime rice art, but to eat it too.

The first chapter of the "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - To the Infinity Castle" trilogy is now in theaters in Japan, having premiered on July 18, 2025. The Demon Slayer anime, which first aired in April 2019, is celebrating its sixth anniversary this year and is finally beginning the "Infinity Castle Arc." What are your thoughts on reaching this point? Saori Hayami (Shinobu Kocho): I'm surprised to think that it's "only been six years." It feels like the time has been so incredibly dense. Looking back over these six years, there have been so many different stages and a long road, so there's a strong feeling of finally having made it this far. ―― Please share your honest impressions after watching "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba -To the Hashira Training-" Hayami: It's difficult to express in words how deeply it stirred various emotions in me. I think it's a work that moves the heart from all angles, something that can't be described in a single phrase. As someone who plays Shinobu Kocho and is involved in this work, I felt very emotional being able to do the voice recording for this film. Seeing those scenes on the big screen again really touched my heart. ―― Please tell us about your memories or impressions of recording for this work. Hayami: This might be a bit off-topic, but before the voice recording, the staff and cast members had a kind of pep rally where we said, "Let's run in the same direction towards the 'Infinity Castle Arc'." From the first scene where Shinobu-san appeared in the "Tanjiro Kamado, Unwavering Resolve Arc", I feel like I've been able to experience Shinobu-san's journey alongside her as the story progressed. Especially from the "Hashira Training Arc", I felt like I was carrying everything flowing through Shinobu-san's body along with her. I have this feeling of wanting to go anywhere and everywhere with Shinobu Kocho as a person. With that feeling, when I received the voice recording script, I couldn't bring myself to open it for a while. ―― In past interviews about the series, you mentioned that Shinobu Kocho might be outwardly imitating her sister Kanae's words and actions while keeping her true feelings deep inside. Hayami: That's right. Before reading the script, I thought I would express Shinobu-san as if she had internalized her sister. But when I finally gathered the courage to read the script before recording, feelings welled up inside me, and I felt like I wanted to do more and more. Hayami: When Shinobu first met Kanao, she was feeling a bit irritable. She couldn't ignore Kanao and was a girl who boldly threw money to take her in. Hayami: I feel like I've walked alongside Shinobu Kocho for a long time, getting to touch the very roots of her heart from up close. It might be a bit abstract, but she is a being whose soul and my own have clashed and merged. ―― In that sense, do you feel there are any shared traits between yourself and Shinobu? Hayami: If anything, she's a figure I look up to. Shinobu is someone with a strong will and a passionate fire burning inside her. Manga superstars Clamp team up with Godiva Japan for sweets featuring Cardcaptor Sakura and more

The latest example of showcasing such talent came from an unexpected source earlier this week: the official Twitter account of Godiva Japan. With the symbol X often being used to denote crossovers in Japanese media, it was clear that the chocolatier was teasing a collaboration of some sort, while still being coy about who their partner was. The mystery wasn't hard for to solve for fans of a certain storied manga creator team, who immediately recognized the outlines of Mokona, and so were able to deduce that Godiva is teaming up with… …Clamp, the four-woman creative collective behind such series as "Cardcaptor Sakura," "xxxHolic" and "Magic Knight Rayearth." Image: Godiva Japan The full details of the collaboration won't be announced until next month, but Godiva has at least said that it will involve a brand-new set of illustrations of Clamp characters from across their collected works, including "Cardcaptor Sakura's" Sakura and Tomoyo, "xxxHolic's" Yuko and Kimihiro, and even "Chobits'" Chi. Though Godiva hasn't said exactly what the tie-up is going to entail, the most likely scenario is that the Clamp artwork will grace special sets of chocolates, likely packaged in tins or boxes that also feature the illustrations in order to give fans something to enjoy even after they've had their dessert. As for the Clamp characters all being drawn in a super-deformed style rather than their more intricate standard character models, trying to apply such high-line-count illustrations to space on top of a chocolate would probably blur the defining details, and Clamp has long had a penchant for suddenly giving their characters the SD treatment for comedic purposes, with the "Magic Knight Rayearth" TV anime being particularly fond of such lighthearted visual punctuation of its gags.
