Team India Champions ready for the World Championship of Legends

Khaleej Times7 days ago
In a country where cinema stirs hearts and cricket ignites souls, nothing captures India's collective passion quite like the exciting blend of the two.
After the tremendous success of last year, the World Championship of Legends (WCL) gears up for its highly anticipated Season 2, with all eyes on the reigning champions - Team India Champions, once again led by World Cup hero Yuvraj Singh.
'It's been amazing to see how WCL has grown into something that truly connects with cricket fans around the world. I'm really excited to be back on the field, playing the game I love, and sharing it with some of the biggest legends," said Yuvraj.
Co-owned by Bollywood star Ajay Devgn, the World Championship of Legends (WCL) promises fierce competition as six big cricketing nations — India, Australia, England, South Africa, Pakistan, and the West Indies — go head-to-head, each represented by teams filled with marquee names.
At the heart of this high-octane tournament is Team India Champions, owned by UK-based Sports Merchants Ltd, led by Salman Ahmed, Jaspal Bahra, and Sumant Bahl. Deeply passionate about the game, the trio is committed to leading India Champions to the very top of the league.
Coming off a thrilling title win last year, Team India Champions return stronger than ever. The squad gets a massive boost with the inclusion of Shikhar Dhawan, who joins a powerhouse squad of match-winners and fan favorites. The team blends experience, power, and flair with veterans like Harbhajan Singh, Suresh Raina, Irfan Pathan, and Robin Uthappa, making it one of the most well-rounded line-ups this season.
The rest of the team includes Yusuf Pathan, Ambati Rayudu, Stuart Binny, Gurkeerat Mann, Siddharth Kaul, Abhimanyu Mithun, Vinay Kumar, Varun Aaron, Piyush Chawla, and Pawan Negi.
"Team India Champions is more than just a squad, it's a legacy. WCL is not just another cricket league, it's a grand celebration that brings legendary players together, rekindling the magic of the game and to remind everyone why they fell in love with cricket in the first place. With the talent and heart this team has, we're definitely aiming to bring the trophy home again,' said Yuvraj.
'This team represents more than just cricket - it stands for legacy, leadership, and pride," said Salman Ahmed, Co-owner of Team India Champions.
"Having legends like Yuvraj Singh lead the side brings not just experience but also immense inspiration for the entire team. We're not just defending a title - we're raising the bar for what this team stands for."
The season starts on July 18 (Friday) in Edgbaston with India's first game scheduled on July 20 and will be played in Birmingham, Leeds and and Leicester.
Star Sports and TNT Sports will broadcast the matches in India and the UK respectively.

Ruthless Australia deny Andre Russell a winning farewell

West Indies stalwart Andre Russell was denied a winning farewell after Josh Inglis and Cameron Green smashed unbeaten half-centuries to secure Australia's eight-wicket victory in the second Twenty20 International on Tuesday. Put into bat, West Indies managed 172-8 as opener Brandon King topscored with a breezy 51 and Russell smashed 36 off 15 balls in his final knock in international cricket. Australia's Inglis (78) and Green (56) then pulverised the West Indies attack in an unbroken 131-run partnership to complete the chase in 15.2 overs, putting the tourists 2-0 ahead in the five-match series. West Indies did not help their own cause by spilling six catches. "I'm very grateful to end my career here playing in front of my own crowd, family and friends," Russell said. "The result didn't go my way, but at the end of the day, I'm happy, I'm grateful. "I wish the boys all the very best, and I wish them luck moving forward," added the 37-year-old two-time World Cup winner. Australia sprang a surprise by asking Glenn Maxwell (12) to open the innings with skipper Mitchell Marsh (21) but the ploy did not pay off, both departing caught behind inside six overs. However, Inglis smashed five sixes in an unbeaten 33-ball blitz, while Green's second successive fifty of the series included four of them. "I think I felt like I managed the tempo pretty well at times," player of the match Inglis said. "After probably being a bit lucky early being dropped, I felt like I managed those middle periods really well with Greeny. "We sort of identified spin was going to be really tough to play on that wicket, so we sort of took our medicine there and went after the quicks." Australia, who won the preceding Test series 3-0, can clinch the series with a third successive victory in Basseterre on Saturday.

India ring in three changes for the Manchester Test ICC World Test Championship

Ben Stokes won the toss and elected to bowl first in the fourth England-India Test at Old Trafford. While England had already announced their playing XI prior to the game, with the inclusion of Liam Dawson in place of the injured Shoaib Bashir, India named their XI at the toss. Skipper Shubman Gill announced as many as three changes for the crucial fourth Test against England at Manchester, after being hit by injuries ahead of the game. The big news from the India camp is the debut of Anshul Kamboj, who replaced injured pacer Akash Deep. Sai Sudharsan and Shardul Thakur who were a part of the first Test have been recalled for the Test. Sai comes in place of Karun Nair, while Thakur replaces the injured Nitish Kumar Reddy. The 24-year-old Anshul from Haryana had impressed during the 'A' tour of England, picking five scalps across two first-class games. Though Kamboj wasn't initially a part of the India squad, he was added as a cover following the rising injuries in the India camp. Jasprit Bumrah also features in the playing XI, and this will be his third game of the series, and possibly the final one given India's declaration at the start of the tour.
