West African Chambers of Mines to Advance Regional Mining Collaboration at Mining in Motion (MIM) 2025
Soro will participate in a panel session alongside representatives from the World Gold Council, Newmont Africa, AngloGold Ashanti and the Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners. The Fostering Synergies Between Artisanal and Small-Scale Miners: Maximizing Gold Value Through Collaboration session will explore how partnerships between small- and large-scale miners can boost Ghana and West Africa's gold industry through strategic collaboration.
In Ghana, major international firms such as AngloGold Ashanti, Newmont Africa, Gold Fields and Galiano Gold are increasing investments (https://apo-opa.co/3YcFD6H) in the country's gold sector. Cardinal Resources is developing the 358,000-ounce-per-annum Cardinal Namdini Mine, set to launch by mid-2025, while Newmont is advancing the expansion of its Ahafo Mine.
Ghana has maintained its position as Africa's largest gold producer – and sixth-largest globally – while Burkina Faso and Mali rank among Africa's other leading producers. EFEDCOM's participation at MIM 2025 will highlight current partnership opportunities across West Africa and among small- and large-scale miners to drive regional mining sector development.
EFEDCOM will also take part in exclusive networking sessions focused on identifying effective strategies for Ghana to address industry challenges and unlock new growth through collaboration and innovation. As a consortium that brings together mining chambers and companies from across the ECOWAS regional mining value chain, EFEDCOM plays a key role in advancing regional market integration to optimize resource use and boost GDP. The organization advocates for investor-friendly policies and sustainable mining practices that reinforce Ghana and West Africa's position as leading global destinations for mining investment.
Organized by the Ashanti Green Initiative, in partnership with the World Bank, the World Gold Council and other international stakeholders, the MIM 2025 Summit will convene top-tier decision-makers, including H.E. John Dramani Mahama, President of Ghana, along with representatives from the African Union and the United Nations. Held at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra, the summit will take place under the theme Sustainable Mining&Local Growth – Leveraging Resources for Global Impact.

Safer borders, stronger trade for West African Women
Every day in West Africa, thousands of women walk through border posts carrying produce like cassava, tomatoes, or maize to sell in neighbouring countries. They are unrecognized but vital parts of the region's food systems and economies. But many face harassment at checkpoints, along with demands for bribes. Border processes may not be in a language that they speak. The border crossings themselves have poor infrastructure. And women often have limited access to banking or other financial services. Coordinated efforts are underway to tackle these challenges within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Forty regional officials met from 24 to 26 February 2025 in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, to endorse a slate of solutions, including: establishing legal clinics at border posts providing gender-sensitivity training for customs and transport officials launching simplified declaration systems for small traders deploying visual, mobile-accessible tools to help women comply with trade procedures engaging men as allies 'We need to ensure regional trade policy becomes a tool for inclusive growth, where women are not just participants, but empowered leaders,' said Sandra Oulate, Director of the ECOWAS Gender Development Centre (EGDC). The International Trade Centre (ITC) is working with ECOWAS and the main German development agency GIZ on the ECOWAS Agricultural Trade (EAT) programme. The goal is implement solutions like these to make cross-border trade safer, simpler, and more inclusive for women. The workshop brought together representatives from ECOWAS, national gender and agriculture focal points, chambers of commerce, and development partners including ITC, Women in Law and Development in Africa (WILDAF), West Africa Association for Cross-Border Trade, in Agro-forestry-pastoral, fisheries products and Food (WACTAF), and the West African Food Systems Resilience Programme. Salimata Thiam, an EGDC representative, said participants were encouraged to 'identify concrete actions that could be implemented within the framework of the EAT project to boost the role of women in regional trade'. ITC presented several tools under development: a new regional trade guide for women, a policy paper on women in agrifood trade, and findings from gender-sensitive border assessments to support informed policymaking. Gold Council awaiting U.S. clarity on gold bar tariffs, Barrick CEO says
Barrick Mining CEO Mark Bristow said on Monday that the World Gold Council is waiting for clarity from the United States regarding potential tariffs on gold bars, but he added that the impact on mining companies would be minimal as they are 'price takers.' In an interview with Reuters, Bristow also said Barrick is not acting as a facilitator between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan for the Reko Diq copper-gold project. Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund PIF was in talks with the Pakistani government to invest in the project. Concerning Barrick's ongoing dispute with Mali, Bristow said the company has not considered selling its Loulo-Gounkoto gold mine complex to a third party at this stage. The Canadian miner beat analysts' expectations for second-quarter profit on Monday, as a surge in gold prices helped to offset a drop in production, including from Mali. The West African nation's military government temporarily took over Loulo-Gounkoto in June, escalating a dispute over the company's alleged refusal to sign a new mining contract and non-payment of taxes. Barrick in its results released on Monday said that due to this loss of control of the mine in Mali, the company had recorded a pretax loss of $1.03 billion.
