Ex-Celtic star Ismaila Soro goes on trial with Premiership club as he sets up shock return to Scotland
FORMER Celtic star Ismaila Soro is reportedly training with Scottish Premiership new boys Falkirk. The ex-Hoops midfielder, signed by Neil Lennon in 2020, has been released by Israeli club Beitar Jerusalem this summer and is looking for a new club. 3 Soro in action for the Hoops Credit: Kenneth Ramsay 3 It didn't quite work out for Soro at Celtic Credit: Kenneth Ramsay 3 Falkirk boss John McGlynn has reportedly offered Soro a trial Credit: Kenny Ramsay Soro scored one goal in 43 appearances for Celtic during his three years at the club and failed to make an impact at Parkhead. He was then shipped out to Portuguese side Arouca on loan before a permanent switch to Beitar Jerusalem followed in the summer of 2023. The Bairns are looking to strengthen their midfield, with just one new addition in that area this summer in the form of Leicester City youngster Henry Cartwright on a season-long loan. They've also brought in former Hoops goalkeeper Scott Bain, Lewis Neilson on loan from Hearts and veteran striker Brian Graham from Partick Thistle. McGlynn has previously said he is looking to bring in two or three more players before the end of the window, but needs to wait to see what bigger clubs do down south before Falkirk can make their move. But the Daily Record is reporting that the Bairns' boss is offering the 27-year-old Soro a trial to see if he can win a deal at the Falkirk Stadium. Falkirk are in the top flight for the first time in 15 years after back to back title wins in League One and the Scottish Championship. They enjoyed an highly impressive unbeaten season in League One, before securing the Championship title on the last day of last season against Hamilton Accies. This season they topped their Premier Sports Cup group before beginning their league campaign with a 2-2 draw at home to Dundee United. They then fell to a 3-1 defeat away to fellow new boys Livingston last weekend. Falkirk fans invade the pitch as promotion to the Premiership is confirmed Falkirk next go to Celtic in the last 16 of the Premier Sports Cup on Friday, before welcoming Hibs to the Falkirk Stadium the following Saturday. After that it's a trip to Pittodrie to face Aberdeen before the international break. Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

African Union court denies Ivory Coast opposition leaders' petition
The African Union 's human rights court on Thursday rejected a petition by Ivory Coast 's ex-president Laurent Gbagbo, who argued his rights were violated by a criminal conviction that is blocking his comeback bid. The court, known as the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights, also threw out a petition by ex-prime minister Guillaume Soro, who like Gbagbo is barred from running in Ivory Coast's elections this year because of his criminal record. Gbagbo was the west African country's leader from 2000 until he was forced from power in 2011 in a bloody civil war that brought current President Alassane Ouattara to power. Gbagbo has declared his candidacy for the October 25 presidential election, even though he is ineligible to run because of a conviction stemming from the conflict. Several prominent opposition figures have been excluded from the October election, including Gbagbo, Soro and Tidjane Thiam, leader of the main opposition Democratic Party of Ivory Coast (PDCI). Gbagbo and Soro petitioned the African Court in 2020, arguing their rights had been violated by the Ivorian justice system. The Tanzania -based court ruled Gbagbo had provided insufficient evidence and was not the victim of discriminatory treatment. It threw out Soro's case, ruling he had not exhausted his appeals in Ivory Coast. In 2020, the same court had issued provisional orders ruling both men must be allowed to run in that year's elections. Ivory Coast has however withdrawn recognition of the court's jurisdiction. Gbagbo, 80, who was acquitted on charges of crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Court, still has a conviction in Ivory Coast stemming from the violent post-election crisis that ended his rule. Soro, 53, who is in exile, was sentenced to life in prison in Ivory Coast on corruption and insurrection charges.

Salif Keita: So Kono review – the Golden Voice still has it
Since the release of his international breakthrough Soro in 1987, the Malian singer-songwriter Salif Keita, possessed of a sweetly soulful tone, has been affectionately known as the 'Golden Voice of Africa'. His genre-spanning work has featured collaborations with psychedelic guitarist Santana, jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter and Jamaican singer Buju Banton. On So Kono, his first album in seven years, Keita returns with an unusually sparse sound featuring guitar, ngoni, calabash, tama and cello. The joy of the record lies in Keita's mature voice, huskier now at 75 and settling into a lower, rumbling register that contrasts with his falsetto. On Aboubakrin and Tassi, he sings over simple, looped ngoni refrains, his raw vocals carrying poignant emotion. While the percussive layering on Soundiata is somewhat jarring, there are many moments of stripped-back beauty. Kanté Manfila finds Keita veering from gravelly whispers to yearning yelps, while highlight Proud showcases his incredibly nimble delivery, weaving through the string melody to reach a soaring climax and proving that the Golden Voice is still full of power.
