Alabama trio named to preseason watch list for college football award

USA Today5 days ago
One of college football's premier individual honors, three Alabama Crimson Tide football players have been named to the preseason watch list for the 2025 Outland Trophy.
Each of those players come along Alabama's offensive line in center Parker Brailsford, right guard Jaeden Roberts, and left tackle Kadyn Proctor. Announced on Tuesday, Alabama was tied with Oregon as the lone programs to see three players listed.
With all three returning starters at their respective positions, Brailsford will be entering his redshirt junior season in 2025, while Roberts will be a redshirt senior. Proctor, who is one of Alabama's top NFL draft prospects entering the season, is a junior who be starting for the third consecutive year at left tackle.
Awarded annually to the nation's top lineman, both offensive and defensive, Alabama has won the Outland Trophy a total of six times previously. A majority of those have been offensive linemen in Chris Samuels (1999), Andre Smith (2008), Barrett Jones (2011), Cam Robinson (2016), and Alex Leatherwood (2020), while the lone defensive player to win the award was Quinnen Williams back in 2018.

Five-star safety from Omaha excited about relationship with Nebraska football

One of the top recruits in the state of Nebraska is impressed by the Huskers' recent recruiting efforts. Omaha Central safety Tory Pittman III told KETV that Nebraska is the one school that has caught his eye. Pittman recently earned his fifth recruiting star. The class of 2027 recruit is the No. 1 prospect in the state of Nebraska and the No. 1 safety in the nation, according to the 247Sports Composite score. "From the jump, they tried to get to know me as a person. Coach Matt Rhule has stayed in constant communication since my eighth-grade year when they first offered me." The recruit has played both safety and wide receiver for the Eagles. In his first season, Pittman totaled 34 tackles and two interceptions and caught three passes for 70 yards in eight games. This past year, he racked up 54 tackles and three interceptions and hauled in 26 catches for 458 yards and five touchdowns in 10 games. Nebraska's class of 2027 holds one commitment. Four-star quarterback Trae Taylor committed in May. Find more from Tory Pittman below. Iowa wrestling reportedly welcoming back previously dismissed grappler

In late June, reports surfaced that Iowa had dismissed talented NCAA qualifier Gabe Arnold. The two-time national prep champion and Iowa 3A state champion at 182 pounds was a big loss for the program. Now, Arnold has reportedly been welcomed back to the program. According to Pat Mineo of The Wrestling Room, Arnold is back at Iowa and rejoining the lineup. Arnold competed at 184 pounds last season for the Hawkeyes. The 5-foot-7 grappler compiled a 10-2 dual record and a 5-2 Big Ten duals mark. Overall, Arnold tallied a 19-7 record in 2024-25. Arnold notched 38 dual points, boasted an 8-6 mark against ranked opponents, collected five major decisions and three tech falls. Four of Arnold's losses came in overtime. In his Hawkeye career, Arnold owns a 27-8 record. Contact/Follow us @HawkeyesWire on X and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Iowa news, notes and opinions. Steelers acquire four-time All-Pro linebacker in PFF's 2018 NFL Redraft

Not every team lands a superstar in the first round of the NFL Draft — and while the Pittsburgh Steelers have their fair share of misses over the past decade, Pro Football Focus recently corrected one of these slip-ups. In a new 2018 NFL Redraft, PFF's Max Chadwick, Dalton Wasserman, and Trevor Sikkema decided the Steelers would pass on S Terrell Edmunds — and instead select four-time All-Pro LB Shaquille Leonard, who was originally selected by the Colts with the 36th pick of the second round. "The Steelers started Jon Bostic at middle linebacker in 2018, then Mark Barron in 2019 and then Robert Spillane in 2020," Chadwick, Wasserman, and Sikkema wrote. "Leonard would have halted that revolving door, as he earned PFF overall grades of 81.4, 78.7, 70.4, and 79.1 in his first four seasons before major drop-offs in 2022 and 2023 after suffering a back injury." Acquiring Leonard would actually kill two birds with one stone — as the Steelers wouldn't have been forced to make another disastrous decision the following draft in trading up to select LB Devin Bush with the 10th overall pick. While it's always exciting to ponder what might've been, the past two Steelers draft classes appear to be on the right track to success — with training camp providing excellent insight as to what lies ahead.
