Everything Ryan Grubb said about Alabama's quarterbacks after second practice

USA Today2 days ago
On Thursday afternoon, new Alabama Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb spoke to the media for what was the first time since fall camp began.
As part of this, Grubb was asked multiple times about the Crimson Tide's ongoing quarterback competition, one in which Ty Simpson, Austin Mack, and Keelon Russell are vying to start for Alabama in their Week 1 matchup against Florida State.
Grubb also gave his comments on the trio Thursday, listing differences between the group, when he'd like to name the starter, and more.
Here is everything Grubb said Thursday during his media availability about Alabama's quarterbacks in particular.
Ryan Grubb on differences between Alabama's quarterbacks
"All these guys, I think they're in different levels of their progression as quarterbacks in college, and I think that all of them, just like any position, have a lot of different strengths. I think that right now, Ty is continuing to show a ton of command. I thought he did a better job today than the other two guys with that, so he continues to progress as a leader, and Keelon's ability to see the field and just his vision, his innate ability to make a play even potentially when there's not one there, is a really, really high level, and then Austin just has elite arm talent. A big guy that's strong and can power through things."
Ryan Grubb on his message to Alabama's quarterbacks
"Consistency. Take care of the ball. You gotta be a guy that can move us forward. I think one of the biggest things that we're stressing right now is minimizing negative yardage plays. Starts with us making sure we got the right mic points on protection or run scheme. So make sure the ball is moving forward and the o-line's on the same page, and then, you know, making great decisions with the football."
Ryan Grubb on how Ty Simpson can win the starting job
"He's got to do it every day between now and Florida State. When we start that preparation, whoever that person is has got to come out and be able to show that it's clearly him, and that's what this football team needs, and all three of those guys know that. So I think being able to show up and do that every day and not waver in and out of the type of player he is, the type of decision maker he is, the inconsistencies that a young quarterback would show or a quarterback that's not ready to start. So as long as Ty can do that, or one of the other guys, that's going to be the player that's going to start a quarterback."
Ryan Grubb on when he'd prefer to name starting quarterback
"Yesterday. Yesterday, if I'm being honest, but you've gotta let it run its course. It's not there yet, and we've been through this before, more than once, and you just gotta let it run its course. We've got a pretty detailed plan on how we'll figure those things out and information that we share with the guys every day, and when it's the right time, we'll be ready to pull the trigger."

Who will Florida football lose to first in 2025? Here's what CBS Sports predicts

Florida football faces a veritable schedule gauntlet this coming fall, which many foresee as among the toughest in the nation once again for the Gators. While nobody expects the Orange and Blue to sweep the regular-season slate, hopes are high in Gainesville that the gridiron gang can take a step forward from last year's improved performance. With Heisman Trophy hopeful DJ Lagway under center and the hot seat temperature turned down a touch under coach Billy Napier, there is a good chance the program can build on its 8-5 finish in 2024. However, it is practically inevitable that Florida will lose at least one game — and very likely there will be more. But when will the first defeat come for Napier and Co.? CBS Sports writer Brandon Crawford recently predicted the first loss for all 16 Southeastern Conference teams. Who will Florida football lose to first in 2025? Crawford foresees the Gators falling short against the LSU Tigers in Death Valley in their Week 3 matchup on Sept. 13. "Beating LSU in Baton Rouge is hard. Taking out the Tigers on the road under the lights is even more difficult. Florida is 1-6 over its last seven games against LSU away from Gainesville, and this one's vital for the Tigers' playoff hopes this fall," he notes. "Equally important for Florida, this one's the first of four straight against top 20 competition. The DJ Lagway vs. Garrett Nussmeier quarterback battle will be worth the price of admission." Florida predicted to give Texas its first loss On the flip side of things, the Gators are poised to play the spoiler for one of the top teams in the conference, the Texas Longhorns. "Our preseason pick to win the SEC this season as one of four playoff teams, the Longhorns will not get through the schedule without a loss. The schedule is too treacherous compared to last season, and The Swamp could be a nightmare this fall for visiting teams," Crawford offers. "Believe it or not, these teams have played in Gainesville before, but that came in 1940. Texas leads the all-time series with Florida, 3-0-1." Veteran Caleb Wheatland set to lead Auburn's talented, young linebacker room

The Maryland transfer brings a wealth of knowledge to the Plains after logging 12 starts at Maryland. The Auburn Tigers' biggest question on defense this season resides within the linebacker room. Sure, the Tigers have plenty of talent with the likes of Demarcus Riddick, Robert Woodyard, Xavier Adkins, and Bryce Deas. However, neither of the aforementioned has more than three games of starting experience. In steps Caleb Wheatland, a senior linebacker who broke into a vital Power Four role last season at Maryland by starting 11 games for the Terrapins. He brings a wealth of knowledge to Auburn's young room, which made him an attractive transfer portal piece to head coach Hugh Freeze last offseason. Earlier this week, Freeze shared that Wheatland's starting experience, as well as his leadership ability, will be vital to Auburn's defense this season. 'We like our linebackers that we have, but it felt like the youth needed some experience. You go get a guy that started a bunch of games in Power Four football and is a really good kid and good player. You just felt like you needed somebody to add to that youth in that room. (Robert) Woodyard is still young, (Antonio) Melendez is still young, I think they are both going to be two really good Mike linebackers, but can we get one that has some experience. And that's what we have in Caleb.' Wheatland logged 100 tackles in three seasons at Maryland, with 15 tackles for loss and three pass deflections. He took a step forward in pass rush and coverage skill last season by grading out 72.2 and 74.4, respectively, according to Pro Football Focus. According to PFF data, Wheatland applied 15 pressures to opposing quarterbacks, four resulting in sacks. As a coverage man, Wheatland allowed 15 passes to be caught in 26 opportunities, giving opposing receivers a catch rate of 57.7%. Wheatland and Riddick will be Auburn's most experienced linebackers this season. As a freshman in 2024, Riddick logged 27 tackles with three sacks in 12 games, making three starts. He created 16 pressures last season, and had three games where he registered three pressures. In 239 snaps, he missed just six tackles, which makes him an efficient linebacker that will be sure to improve with more reps this season. Watch Freeze's opening press conference of fall camp below.
