Gold Coast trainer Peter Robl has reset his goals after winning back-to-back Darwin Cup crowns with Hadouken
The Gold Coast-based conditioner and his good mate, Victoria's premiership-winning jockey Blake Shinn, celebrated Hadouken 's Darwin Cup defence until sunrise at a local pub last week.
'Blake Shinn had to get on a 6am flight. If he didn't have to catch a plane we'd still be there,' the laconic Robl joked.
While Hadouken is now resting in Katherine before he travels back to Robl's Gold Coast stables on Sunday, Robl is already back on the tools and plotting a valuable stakes victory for his talented mare Overfull.
'I'd like to win a stakes race with Overfull because I own half of her,' Robl said.
'She's spelling in Melbourne at the moment.
'She'll come back to Queensland soon and there's a couple of stakes races over the summer carnival that will suit her.'
Overflowing with grit! ðŸ'°

• Gilbert Gardiner's horses to follow, forgive from The Valley on Saturday
Cranbourne trainer Lucy Yeomans, who is also Shinn's partner, is taking care of Overfull while the talented mare takes a break.
The daughter of Overshare won the $200,000 Bernie Spilsbury 3YO Handicap on the Sunshine Coast on July 5, a race named in honour of the club's long-time doctor who recently retired.
Overfull competed in the Listed Lightning Stakes (1050m) on Morphettville three weeks later but could only manage a sixth placing on the heavy ground.
• O'Brien looms large in Caulfield Cup raid
Robl has just 30 horses in work, so it's a tremendous achievement to not only capture back-to-back Darwin Cups with Hadouken but boast a live chance in black type races with Overfull.
'It gets you on a high and they're the reasons why you work so hard in this industry,' Robl said.
'Those results don't come around very often so when they do, you have to cherish the moments.
'But it's like anything, you just come back to the grind. Getting up at three o'clock in the morning brings you back down to earth really quick.'

Robl was a distinguished jockey himself, winning four Group 1s in Queensland and NSW between 2008 and 2013.
However, his career was abruptly cut short by a serious race fall at Scone in January 2014, resulting in a fractured back that forced him out of the saddle on medical advice.
He transitioned into training and gained invaluable hands-on experience as a foreman for David Vandyke, overseeing the Segenhoe Racing stable at Randwick before eventually establishing his own operation on the Gold Coast in 2023.
'I was always going to head down this path and whether or not I'm successful, who knows?' Robl said.
'We're surviving and while we're surviving then we've got a chance.'

Sunshine Coast trainer Vandyke was delighted to see Robl win back-to-back Darwin Cup titles with dirt-track specialist Hadouken, who also captured the Chief Minister's Cup at huge odds on the way to the big race.
'It's always hard to win a big race but to win back-to-back certainly highlights his skill and expertise at getting horses ready,' Vandyke said.
'Peter was always going to have success as a trainer. His greatest strength is his connection to the horse.
'He places them well and they always look good at the races.'
Some victories just hit differently and winning the Darwin Cup is one of those truly special moments. Huge thanks to Hadouken’s owners for the opportunity. And to my great mate Pete, I couldn’t be prouder to share this with you. What a day! https://t.co/fMBcJxDCov pic.twitter.com/vK9fNnvU4x
— Blake Shinn (@blake_shinn) August 4, 2025
For Robl, winning the Darwin Cup with Shinn was the icing on top of a delicious cake for a pair of mates described as a 'yin and yang' combination.
'You couldn't have scripted it better,' Robl said.
'It means a little bit more having Blake riding. It was a great thrill.
'He's 100 per cent full-on when it comes to racing and he leaves no stone unturned whereas I'm happy to kick along, take what's there and just enjoy it.'

Japan's Group 1 weapon Panja Tower poised to head to Australia for $10 million Golden Eagle
Japanese star Panja Tower has been confirmed as the latest foreign raider set for a $10 million Golden Eagle (1500m) assault at Royal Randwick this year. Trainer Shinsuke Hashigushi has put Australia's coveted four-year-old feature in his crosshairs as he attempts to replicate the success of fellow Japanese raider Obamburumai in 2023. Obamburumai gave Japan its first victory in the Golden Eagle two years ago when scoring under the urging of Australian-based jockey Josh Parr. Panja Tower is a winner of three of her five career starts to date and has twice one in stakes grade, including the Group 1 NHK Mile Cup at Tokyo on May 11. Price assessors at TAB quickly installed Panja Tower as an $11 chance on the same line of betting as Aeliana, Evaporate, Linebacker and Treasurethe Moment. 'His trainer, Mr Hashiguchi, when he won the NHK Mile, the first thing he said in his winning interview was that he would send this horse to the Golden Eagle,' Australian Turf Club Head of Racing and Wagering Nevesh Ramdhani told Sky Racing radio. 'That horse is now locked in to travel to Sydney for the race.' G1 3yo NHK Mile at Tokyo: Won in a thriller by 3c 11. It is hoped that multiple European gallopers head to Australia again for the four-year-old feature, including recent Thoroughbred Stakes victor Seagulls Eleven. 2025 Melbourne Cup: Trainers Mick Price, Michael Kent Jr eye Cup
The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr operation has steadily gathered an arsenal that could push the team into a lucrative frontier in the spring. Price and Kent Jr's partnership has been most successful since launching six years ago but the stable has produced only two Melbourne Cup runners. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Oceanex finished 11th for the duo in 2020 while Lastotchka pulled up with a problem after finishing 13th when making her Australian debut in the 2023 edition of the great race. 'It's the most popular race in Australia,' Kent Jr said. 'It's a race, of course, that Mick and I would love to win and we have developed, in recent times, a strategy in buying a few more of these imported staying types.' Lastotchka spent 16 months off the scene as she also required colic surgery before having five runs during the Sydney autumn carnival. • O'Brien looms large in Caulfield Cup raid Kent Jr said the stable wanted to get Lastotchka racing regularly last time but but the now seven-year-old pleased connections when fourth in a Cranbourne jumpout on August 4. 'Last preparation was aimed at getting back into the groove of things and was aimed at the Sydney Cup,' Kent Jr said. 'We got a good (3) track that day and she did not like it. 'She trialled well on Monday and we'll kick off in the Heatherlie (Handicap) at Caulfield. 'She's a very capable mare and she loves getting her toe in the ground. 'While she'll have an entry, naturally, for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup, we just want to get her back winning.' Import Bur Dubai is one of several smart stayers that will form part of Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr's Caulfield and Melbourne Cup team. Picture: Racing Photos • Gilbert Gardiner's horses to follow, forgive from The Valley on Saturday Lastotchka is one of four Price and Kent Jr-trained runners among Caulfield Cup entries along with fellow imports Kitty Rose and Bur Dubai and handy middle-distance performer Golden Path. Kent Jr said Bur Dubai, who finished less than three lengths from the winner when resuming at The Valley last Saturday, was one of a cohort of emerging stayers that was set to show up during the spring. 'I thought we produced a few nice ones last preparation,' Kent Jr said. 'We had Bur Dubai, Wonder Kid, Move On In all win over a trip at their first (Australian) preparations. 'We've put them away, looked after them and brought them back in.' • Melbourne Cup champ Robbie Dolan wins race in Shergar Cup Kent Jr said there were plenty of options for the lightly-raced trio in the spring with country cups and Melbourne Cup qualifying races, including the recently-added Geelong Cup, on the calendar. 'They're very progressive horses and we don't know where they're going to end up yet,' Kent Jr said. 'They're low-rated but have got good ability, they're sound, they're good types and they have been well sourced. 'Where they get to, I'm not sure, but they're the right horses.'

AFL announces Snoop Dogg, record crowds ahead of 2025 Grand Final
The AFL has served up a pre-finals flex after being hammered with claims from the NRL it's Australia's No.1 sport, declaring one in every 21 Australians is a club member while confirming global music icon Snoop Dogg would be the entertainment headliner for the grand final. AFL officials also confirmed that more than seven million people had attended games for the third time ever, with two rounds still to go, having opened with a new record in round 1 and another crowd record at Gather Round in Adelaide. Luring music megastar Snoop Dogg for an MCG debut at the grand final in September comes after epic performances from first Robbie Williams, then Kiss and Katy Perry on the AFL's biggest day. Snoop Dogg vowed to make his performance 'unforgettable'. 'It's an absolute honour to be hitting the stage at the AFL Grand Final — it's one of the biggest events on the Aussie calendar,' the music megastar said. 'Can't wait to bring the energy and celebrate with the fans. Let's make it unforgettable.' US rapper Snoop Dogg will be rocking the MCG on AFL grand final day. Picture: Odd Andersen / AFP) It comes after a performance from homegrown music star The Kid Laroi at last year's NRL grand final received mixed reviews. Australian Rugby League Commission chair Peter V'landys has gone on the attack throughout 2025, spruiking his code as Australia's No.1 and citing TV metrics with hopes his next TV deal surpasses the Australian record $4.5bn agreement the AFL signed in 2022. 'They always look down their noses at us in rugby league,' he said recently of the AFL. 'They always think that we are the poor cousin. All of a sudden this poor cousin has become wealthy and we have overtaken them in audience.' But the AFL has countered with its release of crowd details that showed with two rounds still to be played, and one extra game, 7,002,277 fans have attended matches so far. Last weekend's average AFL crowd was in excess of 33,000. Only one NRL fixture, the clash between the Bulldogs and Warriors, had a crowd in excess of 25,000. The AFL also spruiked that nine clubs had broken their all-time membership record this year as the cumulative total across all 18 teams hit a new a record of 1,324,504 members, which equates to one in 21 Australians being an AFL club member. On top of the huge crowd and membership numbers, which dwarf the NRL considerably, the confirmation of rap mogul Snoop Dogg continues the recent performances of some of the world's biggest stars on AFL grand final day. AFL crowds are hitting record levels still. Picture: Brenton Edwards Snoop Dogg has been a sensation for more than three decades and in recent years has taken his talents to the NFL Super Bowl and the Paris Olympics. 'The AFL grand final is the biggest event on the Australian sporting calendar – and this year, it just got a whole lot bigger,' AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon said. 'Snoop Dogg is a pioneer, a performer, and a true entertainer. He's played to packed stadiums around the world – but we think 100,000 fans at the MCG might just be his most iconic crowd yet. 'We want grand final day to be an unforgettable celebration of footy – and beyond the four quarters of the match, a celebration of culture, energy, and entertainment. Snoop fits that brief better than anyone. 'From Long Beach to the biggest stage in Australian sport – Snoop Dogg is coming to the MCG for the Telstra pre-game entertainment, and we're ready to make history.'
