No intention at moment to implement ‘Tax-Free Month': Brunei minister

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: There is currently no intention to implement a 'Tax-Free Month' during the holiday and bonus period from December to January, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Mohd Amin Liew Abdullah (pic) said at the Second Meeting of the 21st Legislative Council (LegCo) Session on Thursday (Aug 7). The minister was responding to a proposal by LegCo member Salleh Bostaman Zainal Abidin. 'As in other countries, such tax exemption incentives are usually granted to goods or services that are subject to Goods and Services Tax (GST), Value-Added Tax (VAT), or Sales Tax,' the minister explained. As Brunei has not yet implemented GST or VAT, he said, 'implementing a tax-free concept like this may not be appropriate at this time'. He added that the government has already implemented other initiatives to encourage local shopping, such as large-scale 'Salebrations' in cooperation with businesses. In response to another query from LegCo member Rosmawatty Abdul Mumin regarding a potential Bilateral Economic Zone (BS-SEZ) between Kuala Belait and Kuala Baram, the minister highlighted that the ministry, through the Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB), has not yet received any formal proposals. 'However, the ministry remains open to exploring strategic initiative proposals that are expected to benefit the national economy,' he stated. The minister also touched on the concern of a drastic reduction in economic activities in Kuala Belait, stating that the ministry is paying serious attention to the situation. He revealed that dialogues have been held with the Kuala Belait business community, and in the latest discussions, 'several quick-win initiatives are to be implemented to help further develop and maintain prosperity in the district'. – Borneo Bulletin/ANN

KLCI edges higher at midday on selective buying in heavyweights

KUALA LUMPUR: The FBM KLCI traded marginally higher at midday on Friday, supported by selective buying in heavyweights despite a weaker broader market. At 12.30pm, the benchmark FBM KLCI climbed 4.22 points, or 0.27% to 1,553.33 after hitting an intraday high of 1,554.27. There were 293 gainers, 504 losers and 438 counters traded unchanged on the Bursa Malaysia. Turnover stood at 1.46 billion shares valued at RM959.6mil. TA Securities said that despite the firm local benchmark, the sustained negative market breadth and absence of significant local catalysts suggest stocks could retreat into profit-taking consolidation ahead of the weekend. 'Immediate index support remains at 1,490, with stronger support found at 1,465 followed by 1,444. 'Immediate resistance is maintained at 1,564 with next upside hurdles seen at the recent high of 1,586, followed by 1,610 ahead,' it said. According to Hong Leong Investment Bank Research, the recent easing of US-Malaysia tariffs and the unveiling of a pragmatic 13MP may provide a constructive backdrop for the FBM KLCI's near-term trajectory. The index has the potential to retest the 1,550–1,570 resistance levels, it said. The research house said optimism is also supported by growing expectations of a US Fed rate cut as early as September. However, sentiment may remain guarded in August. This is due to persistent foreign net outflows totalling RM14.07 bil year-to-date, the largest since the RM24.6 bil recorded in the pandemic-hit year of 2020. Headwinds include higher US tariffs on pharmaceuticals (up to 250%) and chips (100%), a weak August earnings outlook, and the KLCI's seasonal weakness. HLIB Research said locally, subsidy rationalisation and a possible SST expansion may further dampen sentiment and earnings visibility. Domestically, concerns over subsidy rationalisation and a potential SST expansion could further weigh on consumer sentiment and cloud corporate earnings visibility. Among the gainers on Bursa Malaysia, Allianz-PA gained 80 sen to RM18.30, PETRONAS Gas rose 42 sen to RM18.58, United Plantations added 16 sen to RM13.16 and Ajinomoto climbed 16 sen to RM13.16. Meanwhile, the top decliner was Nestle, which lost 72 sen to RM89. PPB Group fell 29 sen to RM9.01, BAT declined 15 sen to RM4.92 and UMS Integration gave up 15 sen to RM5.24.

Ascott, Coronade team up for five-star Coronation Square hotel in Johor Bahru

SINGAPORE, Aug 8 — Singapore-headquartered hospitality firm The Ascott Ltd has been appointed by Coronade Properties Sdn Bhd to manage the hotel component of the Coronation Square integrated development in Johor Bahru. Ascott chief growth officer Serena Lim and Coronade Properties corporate relations director Datin Paduka Alinah Ahmad signed the hotel management agreement, witnessed by Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi and Singapore Minister of State for Trade and Industry & National Development Alvin Tan, at Capital Tower here today. Operating under Ascott's flagship namesake brand, Ascott Coronation Square Johor Bahru, the five-star hotel will feature 207 rooms housed within Tower 1 of Coronation Square and is scheduled to open in the second half of 2029. Strategically located in the Ibrahim International Business District (IIBD) within the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), the development will also be directly connected to the upcoming Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link, which connects Johor's Bukit Chagar with Singapore's Woodlands North. Ascott chief executive officer Kevin Goh said that as the first major hospitality partnership under the JS-SEZ framework, the project reflects the growing momentum behind cross-border collaboration and Ascott's confidence in the region's long-term prospects. 'This hotel represents a landmark debut for the Ascott brand in Johor Bahru and our sixth Ascott-branded property in Malaysia. With over 1,000 properties worldwide, this project further demonstrates our sustained growth trajectory and the strength of our partnerships across strategic markets,' he said in his welcome remarks. The other five Ascott-branded properties are in Kuala Lumpur and Penang. Meanwhile, Onn Hafiz said the partnership would not only bring a world-renowned brand to Johor and raise its international profile, but also generate employment opportunities for the local community. 'The arrival of Ascott in Coronation Square marks a turning point for Johor's hospitality landscape. It also opens doors for Johoreans not only in terms of jobs, but in exposure, capability building and industry excellence,' he said. Onn Hafiz said projects like Coronation Square attract international investors, tourists, and talents — all of whom contribute to a more diverse and resilient economy for the state. He noted that, when completed, Coronation Square will transform Johor Bahru into a new metropolis and financial hub. Currently under development, Coronation Square — launched by the Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Almarhum Sultan Iskandar in 2015 — is a RM5 billion integrated project and marks the first initiative to kick-start the 250-acre (101.17-hectare) IIBD. Meanwhile, Tan said the JS-SEZ is a complementary and win-win initiative for both Singapore and Johor, describing it as an important development that enhances the region's value proposition as an investable location for parties outside Asean. 'It is the strength of Singapore as a global hub in research and development, and finance combined with Johor's growing talent pool and resources,' he said. — Bernama
