No intention at moment to implement ‘Tax-Free Month': Brunei minister

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: There is currently no intention to implement a 'Tax-Free Month' during the holiday and bonus period from December to January, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Mohd Amin Liew Abdullah (pic) said at the Second Meeting of the 21st Legislative Council (LegCo) Session on Thursday (Aug 7).
The minister was responding to a proposal by LegCo member Salleh Bostaman Zainal Abidin.
'As in other countries, such tax exemption incentives are usually granted to goods or services that are subject to Goods and Services Tax (GST), Value-Added Tax (VAT), or Sales Tax,' the minister explained. As Brunei has not yet implemented GST or VAT, he said, 'implementing a tax-free concept like this may not be appropriate at this time'.
He added that the government has already implemented other initiatives to encourage local shopping, such as large-scale 'Salebrations' in cooperation with businesses.
In response to another query from LegCo member Rosmawatty Abdul Mumin regarding a potential Bilateral Economic Zone (BS-SEZ) between Kuala Belait and Kuala Baram, the minister highlighted that the ministry, through the Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB), has not yet received any formal proposals.
'However, the ministry remains open to exploring strategic initiative proposals that are expected to benefit the national economy,' he stated.
The minister also touched on the concern of a drastic reduction in economic activities in Kuala Belait, stating that the ministry is paying serious attention to the situation.
He revealed that dialogues have been held with the Kuala Belait business community, and in the latest discussions, 'several quick-win initiatives are to be implemented to help further develop and maintain prosperity in the district'. – Borneo Bulletin/ANN

‘I don't smoke', says Anwar, backing push to raise tobacco tax

Published on: Thursday, August 07, 2025 Published on: Thu, Aug 07, 2025 By: Muhammad Yusry, Malay Mail Text Size: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim speaks to the press after the Finance Ministry's Budget Engagement Session at the ministry's headquarters in Putrajaya August 7, 2025. — Picture by Raymond Manuel PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today said he agrees in principle with raising tobacco taxes. He was responding to calls for the government to review tobacco duties. Advertisement 'I agree with the spirit of that proposal. I myself not only do not smoke, but also fully support anti-smoking campaigns,' he told reporters when asked about the matter. In 2015, Malaysia raised the excise duty on tobacco by 42.8 per cent. Together with the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), the overall tax on cigarettes increased from 28 sen per stick in 2014 to 40 sen in 2015. Since then, tobacco taxes have not been revised. Advertisement In Budget 2024, Anwar's administration introduced a 5 per cent excise duty on chewing tobacco, but left cigarette taxes unchanged. In May, a Merdeka Center survey found that two-thirds of Malaysians support higher cigarette taxes, provided they are implemented moderately and predictably. The survey revealed that 66 per cent backed a tax hike, 25 per cent opposed it, and nine per cent were unsure. Support was strongest among those aged 21 to 30, with over 84 per cent in favour, while opposition was highest among respondents aged 51 to 60. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
