Brits reveal top 30 'mic drop' moments: From nailing jokes to mastering tricky skills

Daily Mirror29-07-2025
A study of 2,000 UK adults has uncovered Brits' biggest everyday victories, with the majority of people feeling satisfied when they complete a task or get a joke right
A study has pinpointed the little triumphs that Brits cherish most. They range from breezing through a series of green lights to nailing a tricky parallel parking spot. Other cherished moments included cracking a joke at just the right time and waking up naturally before your alarm buzzes. Also featured in the top 30 list was completing a tough crossword or puzzle, and catching something thrown at you without fumbling.

A whopping 80 percent of people will internally celebrate these small victories, whether by grinning to themselves, sharing their success with friends, or even busting out a little victory dance. It turns out, 37 per cent have even received an applause for their so-called 'mic drop' moment.

The research was commissioned by Direct Line Insurance, whose spokesperson Lucy Brooksbank said: "These moments show how great it feels when something in life goes exactly right. That whole euphoric feeling of that mic drop moment, which highlights 'That's how it's done'.
"Whether it is a sharp one-liner that lands at the exact right time, a trick shot into the bin from across the room, or pulling off something unexpectedly slick, these little wins can feel like you have momentarily become the main character in your own movie.
"They might be fleeting, but they leave a lasting impression."
For a third of those who have had such an experience, the buzz can last for hours, and for 21 percent, it can make their entire day.
More than four in 10 (42 per cent) find them extra satisfying when they are unexpected. With three quarters admitting they underestimate how satisfying these small wins can be.
Lucy added: "These moments stick with us because they offer a powerful surge of confidence.

"They make us feel sharper, cooler, more in control - even if just for a few seconds.
"And when someone else witnesses it? That is just the cherry on top."

Lucy Letby celebrated friend's wedding while on bail amid baby murder investigation

Lucy Letby celebrated friend's wedding while on bail amid baby murder investigation Letby was seen laughing and dancing at a pal's wedding while she was on police bail following her initial arrest The new ITV documentary titled 'Lucy Letby: Beyond Reasonable Doubt?', sees an old school friend of Lucy discussing how the nurse made it to her wedding while out on bail. (Image: ITV) A former schoolmate of Lucy Letby has made a startling disclosure after revealing photos of the convicted baby murderer attending her wedding while on police bail. The nurse was initially apprehended in July 2018 under suspicion of killing eight infants and was formally charged in November 2020. She was later convicted in two separate trials for the murder of seven babies and the attempted murder of seven others. Read everything you need to know about the case. ‌ Dawn Howe, who attended Aylestone Secondary School in Hereford with Letby, unearthed a collection of photographs during the new ITV documentary titled 'Lucy Letby: Beyond Reasonable Doubt?' ‌ Some of the images depict Letby grinning and dancing at Dawn's nuptials, which occurred amidst Cheshire Police's inquiry into whether the neonatal nurse from Countess of Chester Hospital was potentially the UK's most notorious child murderer. For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter . ‌ In the documentary, Dawn remarked: "Definitely got some holiday snaps, birthdays, holidays I've forgotten we even had. The wedding photos are definitely my favourite." Lucy and Dawn were old school friends (Image: ITV) With a chuckle, she continued: "There is Lucy at my wedding. I am just so glad she could be there because it was while she was on bail, she had to get special permission to be allowed to come from the police." ‌ One striking photo captures Letby, clad in a red blouse and grey skirt, smiling as others around her applaud on the dance floor. Another snapshot features a newlywed Dawn strolling by Letby, who joyously tosses confetti into the air. Lucy had to get special permission from the police to attend Dawn's wedding. (Image: ITV) ‌ Dawn and Lucy, who met during their teenage years, reminisced over wedding photographs with Dawn remarking: "Shortly after this she was held in custody so... I don't think Lucy has seen these." Reflecting on the shock of her friend's arrest around her wedding time, Dawn said: "I watched it all unfold every step of the way. I just couldn't believe it. It was beyond belief that this could be happening." The programme later shows Dawn again, this time driving to the school where she and Letby spent much of their youth. ‌ Within their circle, Dawn noted that Lucy was the only one with a definitive career ambition, recalling how during her A-levels, she aspired to "be a nurse and deal with really poorly babies". On camera, Dawn expressed her disbelief about the allegations, saying: "We were here and then university and then a few years after university is when she is supposed to have gone off on this killing spree.." Since September the Thirlwall Inquiry has been examining how the former neonatal nurse was able to murder or attack 14 babies at the Countess of Chester Hospital. (Image: PA) ‌ When the guilty verdict for Letby came through in August 2023, Dawn was at work and recounted feeling "dumbfounded" upon hearing the news. Her first thoughts turned to what would happen to Letby, as she said: "She can't just spend the rest of her life in prison." Despite losing two appeals against her convictions last year, Letby's legal team, headed by barrister Mark McDonald, presented new evidence from international experts to the Criminal Cases Review Commission in April, seeking to overturn her convictions. ‌ Dawn remained a steadfast supporter of Letby throughout the trial and continues her support, yet she confessed to feeling guilty for enjoying freedom while her friend faces 15 whole-life sentences. She reflected: "I am living a life Lucy should be living beside me in parallel. We should both be having families and we both bought our houses and we were looking forward to the next chapter of our lives and then all this happened. "It is just... there is so much guilt that I am sort of living a life that Lucy should also be living." Article continues below When approached about the allegations mentioned in this narrative, Cheshire Police opted not to provide a statement.

Love Island fans blast ‘awkward' change to series finale as they blame ITV cuts

Two cheating shocks were also exposed during the final Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) LOVE Island viewers have blasted an "awkward" change to the show's format as the Islanders enjoyed their final evening in the villa. This year, after enjoying their final dinner together, the Islanders all remained seated as they delivered passionate speeches to one another about their time in the show and their romances with one another. It left fans insisting the whole segment was "awkward" especially given that the major final dates were axed for this year's series. It has even seen some fans blame ITV budget cuts for the lack of dates and the "awkward" final scenes. Writing online, one Love Island viewer penned: "Love Island clearly spent their budget on blu's flights because why are there no real final dates and WHY are the final speeches so awkward???" Another added: "This is so f***ing awkward at least get them to stand up." Before a third echoed: "How awkward must it feel to sit and speak to you partner whilst everyone is looking at you in silence, I couldn't be on this show." This year's final four saw Angel and Ty, Shakira and Harry, Toni and Cach and Yasmin and Jamie vying to be crowned the winners as well as taking home the £50,000 prize. Later in the episode, the show was rocked by a double cheating shock. Tommy Bradley confessed to snogging the same girl as Ben Holborough behind Lucy Quinn's back. Tommy had been romancing Lucy after they left the villa but despite enjoying a few dates, it all crumbled when he enjoyed a smooch with another woman on a night out. Love Island shock as Tommy admits cheating on ex Lucy with the SAME girl Ben kissed behind Andrada's back Speaking to host Maya Jama on Love Island, hunky Tommy confessed his budding romance was over after his actions. Admitting he acted "disrespectfully", he told Maya how he "messed up" for going behind Lucy's back for the secret snog. But in another shock, it was later revealed that Tommy had kissed the same girl that Ben had also cheated on partner Andrada with. The Sun told how Ben had been pictured all over The Only Way Is Essex star Dani Imbert at a glitzy showbiz event with the pair reportedly going on to enjoy a series of snogs together. It is likely to spark speculation that Dani is also the woman in question in the middle of Tommy and Lucy's romance.
