The Thomas Frank era officially begins on Saturday (10 am ET), when Tottenham Hotspur host newly promoted Burnley to kick of the 2025-26 Premier League season.
WATCH — Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley
Frank replaced Ange Postecoglou as Spurs manager this summer — just weeks after the Aussie delivered the club its first trophy since 2008 — and Tottenham Hotspur legend Heung-min Son decided it was time for him to move on as well, so say it's been a summer of change and transition would be a massive understatement. Cristian Romero has replaced Son as captain and everyone else is back from last season's Europa League-winning team, with the noted addition of Mohammed Kudus ($74 million, from West Ham) in Son's place. James Maddison (torn ACL) and Dejan Kulusevski (knee) are both missing in central midfield, where Frank's options are limited to ball-winners and all-action types. Spurs will be a dangerous counter-attacking and set-piece side this year, if their goals against PSG in the UEFA Super Cup are any indication, and that raises the floor for last season's 17th-place finishers but lowers their ceiling at the same time.
Burnley have been plenty busy themselves this summer, preparing for life in the top tier once again. A dozen players have already been signed with transfer fees attached, and it's a baker's dozen if you include Axel Tuanzebe, who signed as a free agent from recently relegated Ipswich Town. Scott Parker's Clarets were promoted back to the Premier League (again) after finishing 2nd last season, their first back in the Championship (again). It marked the 4th straight season that Burnley have either been promoted or relegated, as they yo-yo back and forth, clearly too good for the second tier but also miles off the pace the last time they were in the top flight (24 points from 38 games, relegated by 8 points).

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley prediction
Based on their Super Cup performance, Spurs are well equipped to knock off some of the 'bigger' sides from around Europe in the Champions League this season, but without Maddison or Kulusevski they're still probably going to struggle when they have lots of the ball and have to break down an organized defense. Spurs 1-0 Burnley.

Man City boss Guardiola wants to keep Tottenham target Savinho

Pep Guardiola wants to keep Manchester City winger Savinho for "many years" but will not stop any of his players leaving if they are determined to quit the Etihad Stadium. Guardiola knows Tottenham boss Thomas Frank is interested in Savinho after the departure of Son Heung-min and a long-term injury to James Maddison. City goalkeeper Ederson has been linked with a move to Turkish side Galatasaray after Guardiola re-signed the club's former youth academy graduate James Trafford from Burnley in the close season. Ahead of Saturday's Premier League opener at Wolves, the City manager insisted neither Savinho nor fellow Brazilian Ederson had told him they wanted to move on. "If they want to leave, they will come to me. If they want to leave, they will knock on my door," he told reporters on Friday. Savinho, who made 48 appearances for City in his debut campaign last term, has been criticised for a lack of cutting edge. And while Guardiola is keen to retain the 21-year-old, he stopped short of guaranteeing he would still be at the club when the transfer window closes in September. "I don't know. Tottenham or any other club who wants a player should call the club," he said. "I am only concerned right now that Savinho will be with us for the rest of the season and hopefully many, many years because at 21 years old, with the potential he has, he plays a lot of minutes. "He has to improve in the final decisions but he is an extraordinary player. Otherwise he would not have played more than 3,000 minutes last season. "But in the end the desire of the players is above everything. Then they have to find an agreement with the club. If they don't make an agreement, the player will be here because the club spent money on that player." - 'I have too many players' - Guardiola also revealed Savinho will be sidelined for "a few weeks" with an injury sustained in last week's pre-season friendly against Palermo. City's midfield talisman Rodri, who missed most of last season with a serious knee injury, is expected to travel to Wolves despite a fitness setback. Rodri's latest injury issue has raised doubts about his durability for the gruelling Premier League campaign and Guardiola admitted City have to careful in managing the 29-year-old's fitness. "Rodri is so close to coming back but it is important his knee is perfect," he said. "He needs to play minutes in training sessions. "What we want for him is not to come back and step back. That would not be good because in this dynamic you cannot get rhythm. This competition is so demanding." Guardiola has been keen to reduce his squad to avoid unhappy players sitting on the bench and this week he allowed England winger Jack Grealish to join Everton. Grealish was instrumental in City's treble-winning campaign in 2023, but struggled over the last two seasons amid talk of excessive partying off the pitch. "I wish him all the best at a traditional club like Everton and hopefully he can play, play, and play," Guardiola said. Another player who could depart is James McAtee, who is close to finalising a move to Nottingham Forest. "I would love to have Macca but I have too many players," Guardiola said. smg/pb

Premier League 2025/26 preview – title predictions, key fixtures and big storylines as the EPL gets underway

The Premier League is back, but who will win the title race, which teams are likely to go down, and can anyone stop defending champions Liverpool? Sports journalist and Man City fan Bill Borrows sizes up the opening weekend of the EPL as soccer biggest events kicks off live on Friday, August 15... Seasoned Man United haters watchers will be hoping United get off to a flying start with their all-new forward line of Benjamin Šeško, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo and romp home 3-0. This then guarantees that #UnitedAreBack starts trending before hitting the relegation positions in early October and their all-new forward line start looking for new clubs. This is now, officially, 'The Manchester United Way'. Prediction: Man United 3 Arsenal 0 The first game of the season should be a banger. The media will be keen to anoint Liverpool as the greatest team the world has ever seen within three minutes of kick-off (millions of fans who couldn't find Liverpool on a map = millions of clicks) but, given the amount the new Premier League Champions have spent to try and retain the title – almost £300 million – compared to Bournemouth's brave £70 million net spend to ward off relegation, anything less than a total humiliation of Andoni Iraola's side will be unacceptable. Bournemouth will score first, however. Prediction: Liverpool 3 Bournemouth 1 Viktor Gyokeres hasn't even kicked a ball in the Premier League yet but his boss at Arsenal, Mikel Arteta, went very large after his debut goal pre-season. 'If you leave Gyokeres one vs one, he will destroy you' he said, in no way adding to the weight of expectation the Swedish international must be feeling after being identified as the one missing piece of the jigsaw that has stopped Arsenal winning the title in recent years. Expect Arteta to be in this slot most weeks until he is fired just after Christmas. Here's where I think every team in Premier League will finish the title race – and why. 1 Man City Guardiola will insist 2 Chelsea Starting to click 3. Liverpool Cracks at the back 4. Arsenal Can't cross the line 5. Aston Villa Emery and Europe 6. Nottm Forest Hit ceiling 7 Tottenham Frank factor 8. Newcastle Isak or no Isak, unsettled 9. Crystal Palace Ready for top half 10. Brighton Mid-table forever 11. Man Utd New strikers, same defence 12. Everton New ground bounce 13. West Ham Holding pattern 14. Bournemouth Gravity 15. Leeds Utd Not enough quality 16.
