Will probe alleged gutkha smuggling through Dahisar, Mulund: Minister

Hindustan Times18-07-2025
Mumbai: Food and drug administration minister Narhari Zirwal on Thursday said the government would conduct an investigation into alleged gutkha smuggling into the city through the Dahisar and Mulund toll nakas. The government will also consider invoking the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against those involved in the transportation and sale of gutkha, banned in Maharashtra since 2012, Zirwal told the legislative council. The issue was raised in the council by the BJP's Shrikant Bhartiya, who alleged gutkha was being sold openly across cities despite the ban.
'Gutkha is being smuggled from neighbouring states and its open sale shows failure of the FDA (food and drug administration),' Bhartiya said, demanding that licenses of shops found selling gutkha be cancelled.
Leader of opposition in the council, Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Ambadas Danve, too alleged that gutkha smuggling was rampant and top officials from the police, FDA and local administration were involved in it. Gutkha worth ₹100 crore was smuggled into Maharashtra every day, alleged Danve – it was brought till the state border in large containers, then shifted into smaller vehicles for distribution. Danve also demanded stringent action against gutkha traders and dealers to curb the malpractice.
In response, FDA minister Zirwal informed the council that between April 1 and May 31 this year, the FDA seized gutkha worth ₹3.20 crore, alongside 10 vehicles involved in gutkha transportation.
'This is a serious matter. Considering the ill effects of gutkha on health, we are thinking of imposing the MCOCA on gutkha dealers and traders for effective implementation of the gutkha ban. We will seek the opinion of the law and judiciary department regarding it,' said Zirwal.
BJP MLC Praveen Darekar then alleged that gutkha was smuggled into the city through the Dahisar and Mulund toll nakas under political patronage.
'I complained about the matter to the local police, but no action was taken. Who are those political leaders supporting gutkha smuggling? The government must inquire into it,' said Darekar.
Zirwal responded saying a probe would be ordered into alleged gutkha smuggling through Dahisar and Mulund entry points.

Negi accuses BJP of insulting national flag

Shimla, Jul 27(UNI) Himachal Pradesh Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi has strongly criticized BJP leaders and a few local businessmen in Thunag for allegedly insulting the national flag during a protest against the government's decision to shift the Horticulture College from Thunag to a safer location. Negi defended the Congress government's move to relocate the college, citing the recent flash floods and the risk to students' lives. "It is wrong to run a college in a disaster-prone area just to protect business interests of a few people," he said, adding that students living in rented homes in Thunag had themselves requested relocation due to repeated disasters in 2023 and 2024. The Minister said that BJP workers and a handful of shopkeepers tried to block the state government's decision and even created a scene during his visit to the area. 'They surrounded my vehicle, threw black cloths and a slipper-like object at it, and disrespected the tricolour mounted on the car,' he alleged. 'This act amounts to treason,' he added. Negi also questioned the BJP's silence over the incomplete infrastructure of the college. "Out of the total Rs 270 crore sanctioned, only Rs 10 crore was spent when BJP was in power," he claimed. He said Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu is personally monitoring the situation and relief work is going on without any resistance from the common people. 'Only some BJP leaders and businessmen are trying to politicize the issue,' Negi said. Negi further targeted BJP leader Dr. Rajeev Bindal, saying, 'The real shameful act is the insult of the national flag, not the relocation of the college meant to save lives.' The college was shifted after discussions with the university, as there was no suitable vacant land in the Saraj area, the Minister clarified. UNI ML RKM

Nagpur Powers Up India's First AI-Driven Anganwadi

1 2 Nagpur: In a landmark move to revolutionise early childhood education, India's first Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered Anganwadi was inaugurated in Nagpur district under the ambitious initiative Mission Bal Bharari. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis launched the pioneering project at Metro Bhavan, with several top dignitaries including Union minister Nitin Gadkari, state BJP president and guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, and zilla parishad CEO Vinayak Mahamuni in attendance. The pilot Anganwadi, set up at Waddhamna in Hingna taluka, boasts cutting-edge technology such as Virtual Reality (VR) headsets, AI-integrated smart dashboards, and interactive digital learning content. "These facilities — rare even in premium private kindergartens — will be used to teach poems, songs, and curriculum in a highly engaging and innovative manner," said a senior official. What makes this initiative particularly impactful is its aim to bridge the educational divide between rural and urban areas. "This is an emotional resolution to ensure every child learns with joy, curiosity, and confidence," said Mahamuni, adding that the goal is to bring a historic transformation in Maharashtra's early childhood education system. As part of the mission, Anganwadi workers were trained to operate the advanced smart tools. The zilla parishad plans to expand this model by launching 40 more AI-powered Anganwadis across Nagpur district. "Through Mission Bal Bharari, we are committed to giving kids from rural backgrounds same trust, exposure, and facilities that children in metropolitan cities receive at home or in private kindergartens," the CM said. The launch event saw the presence of key political leaders including minister of state for agriculture Ashish Jaiswal, MLAs Krishna Khopde, Pravin Datke, and Sanjay Meshram, along with divisional commissioner Vijayalakshmi Bidari and district collector Vipin Itankar. With Nagpur Zilla Parishad at the helm, this initiative also symbolises a visionary step toward inclusive and future-ready education.
