IIT Alumni Council Calls for Industry Collaboration to Manufacture Advanced Sustainable Materials at Global Scale

New Delhi [India], June 9: The IIT Alumni Council has invited leading industrial players to collaborate on the mass production of next-generation materials, designed using principles from the semiconductor industry and accelerated by AI-driven platforms.
At the heart of this initiative lies the AMAT AI Platform--a foundational large material model under development. Its goal: to replace scarce, expensive elements like lithium, cobalt, molybdenum, nickel, and indium with earth-abundant alternatives such as coal, thorium, silica, and iron ore.
"These projects require significant capital investments--often exceeding Rs10,000 crores," said Ravi Sharma, President and Chief Volunteer, IIT Alumni Council. "They include the design and fabrication of high-throughput process equipment and large-scale manufacturing plants. Our role is to act as a knowledge partner and incubate research startups via our Social Impact Fund. These startups are critical in adapting and refining the core technologies for industrial-scale deployment."
Reimagining Materials, Redefining Possibilities:
"Materials like carbon and silicon are extremely versatile," explained Mr. Jitendra Singh, Distinguished Fellow, IIT Alumni Council. "Carbon ranges from diamonds to coal, graphene superconductors to carbon insulators--depending on its structure. Silicon, when doped, transforms into a semiconductor. Together, carbon and silicon form silicon carbide, a key candidate for low-cost inverters and devices. We are also exploring zero-gap semiconductors, which could disrupt industries like energy storage, HVAC, and turbine manufacturing through new architectures like high-efficiency thermoelectric generators (TEGs) and Peltier-based cooling systems."
A Turning Point in Green Chemistry:
"AI's most visible early contribution to materials science is here," added Mr. Shashi Shekhar, environmentalist and former Secretary, Ministry of Water & Ganga Rejuvenation. "When combined with additive manufacturing and Industry 4.0, this opens the door to safe, sustainable, and high-performance materials. These can even replace corroding materials like ToR steel or expensive ones like food-grade stainless steel."
Shashi Shekhar, who now serves as Vice Chairman of Acme Group, noted that the Government of India's Green Hydrogen Mission is pushing for decarbonization of the steel industry.
"By aligning with the IIT Alumni Council, we plan to develop green steel alloys that are cost-effective, sustainable, and suitable for high-performance applications like additive manufacturing and specialized equipment."
Industry Progress and Global Partnerships:
Recently, Outokumpu delivered its first batch of specialty powdered stainless steel for 3D printing applications such as heat exchangers and aerospace components.
"It's remarkable that the IIT Alumni Council foresaw this trend and began building the ecosystem early--spanning AI-driven material innovation to carbon-free green steel production," said Mr. Y.P.S. Suri, former MD of Outokumpu India and IIT Kharagpur alumnus. "We are entering a new paradigm. I look forward to seeing the world's first process plant built entirely through additive manufacturing."

According to a recent report from Snowflake, for every dollar spent on AI, there is a 45% return on the investment.'We are seeing a lot of productivity gains. Ability to do things that used to take a long time is now possible. Certain things that used to require a lot of expertise are now easily accessible to others. So the ROI is clearly measured by our customers. Everyone is very cost conscious, and then they are very clearly seeing the returns on their investments,' Gultekin it comes to the Indian market, Gultekin said while the firm does not have specific India-focused products, multimodal and multilingual data benefits their products as well, he said. Our customers need to be able to break down these data silos, to make sure that they're able to govern that access,' Gultekin the costs are coming down, GPUs are expensive, as companies host LLM models. 'We are optimising our usage and utilisation of these GPUs. Couple of weeks ago, we released an optimised version of Llama 3.1, where we were able to reduce the costs by 70% or so. We reflected that reduction back to the customer. So being able to take advantage of the open-source ecosystem and optimise how these models are used, allows us to reduce the cost to us, and then reflect the benefits back to the customer,' Gultekin said.

NEW DELHI: Govt and the Insolvency & Bankruptcy Board of India have discussed a proposal for a sharp increase in the number of benches of the National Company Law Tribunal from 63 to 80-85. They are also considering adding 150-200 "special benches" for four to five years to deal with the backlog in insolvency cases. The law provides for deciding cases within 180 days, which can be extended by another 90 days. In contrast, more than three-fourths of the cases are now taking longer than 270 days, with another 9% taking between 180 and 270 days. At the end of March, only 13% of the 1,194 cases were decided within six months, according to IBBI data. The data also showed that the average time taken has been on an upward trajectory for the last few years. The last financial year saw 259 cases decided, following 263 approvals in the previous year. At this rate, it will take around seven years to clear the pending over 1,900 cases. Last year also saw 723 cases being admitted, which means the number of pending cases will only increase. "We saw that a large part of the year had all the members in NCLT to decide on cases, and approvals are now stabilising around 260-270 annually. But we need to speed up decisions so that the asset quality is preserved for resolution and creditors can also realise more value," a source told TOI. One of the reasons for fewer cases coming under the IBC fold last year was healthier bank balance sheets. The proposed "special benches" can see members only for a specified period of around five years, and once the case backlog is reduced, the window can be closed, added sources. In any case, the appointment of NCLT members, who also deal with other Companies Act cases, is for a fixed tenure, and the proposal will involve govt adding several more members. Finding such a large number of members in one go can, however, be a challenge, as will be creating infrastructure. Software exports of STPI-Hyderabad units rose 15% to over ₹1.42 lakh crore in FY25

The Software Technology Parks of India-registered units under the STPI-Hyderabad jurisdiction achieved software exports of ₹1,42,591 crore in 2024-25. This is an increase of 15% compared to ₹1,23,966.85 crore exports registered in 2023-24. STPI-Hyderabad operates through its main centre in Hyderabad and five sub-centres in Kakinada, Tirupati, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam and Warangal. STPI-Hyderabad Directorate has been instrumental in nurturing the IT industry and tech startup ecosystem in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. As a key enabler of the region's digital transformation, it has played a major role in positioning Hyderabad among the top IT hubs in India. STPI-Hyderabad empowers India's tech industry with 1.35 lakh of workspace, the Directorate said in a release on STPI's 34th Foundation Day. STPI began its journey with three centres, at a time when the IT industry was at a nascent stage. Presently, STPI has 67 centres across the country that played a vital role in transforming the IT industry of the country. In 2024-25, exports by STPI registered units reached more than ₹10 lakh crore, STPI Director General Arvind Kumar said. In line with the government of India's emphasis, STPI is working to enhance the presence of IT industry in Tier-II and Tier-III cities of the country. As many as 59 of its 67 centres are in Tier-II and Tier-III cities. It is also nurturing tech startup ecosystem through its 24 centres of entrepreneurship (CoEs) and NGIS and supported more than 1,400 startups. Startups empowered through the STPI ecosystem have raised ₹574 crore funds from investors. Towards boosting innovation and entrepreneurship, STPI-Hyderabad has set up two CoEs — IMAGE and Kalpataru focused on high-potential emerging technologies in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam, respectively. IMAGE is dedicated to Gaming, Animation, VFX, Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence. Focused on Industry 4.0, Kalpataru aims to build a robust innovation ecosystem. IMAGE and Kalpaturu CoE's have nurtured 92 and 42 startups, respectively.
