IIT Alumni Council Calls for Industry Collaboration to Manufacture Advanced Sustainable Materials at Global Scale

PNN
New Delhi [India], June 9: The IIT Alumni Council has invited leading industrial players to collaborate on the mass production of next-generation materials, designed using principles from the semiconductor industry and accelerated by AI-driven platforms.
At the heart of this initiative lies the AMAT AI Platform--a foundational large material model under development. Its goal: to replace scarce, expensive elements like lithium, cobalt, molybdenum, nickel, and indium with earth-abundant alternatives such as coal, thorium, silica, and iron ore.
"These projects require significant capital investments--often exceeding Rs10,000 crores," said Ravi Sharma, President and Chief Volunteer, IIT Alumni Council. "They include the design and fabrication of high-throughput process equipment and large-scale manufacturing plants. Our role is to act as a knowledge partner and incubate research startups via our Social Impact Fund. These startups are critical in adapting and refining the core technologies for industrial-scale deployment."
Reimagining Materials, Redefining Possibilities:
"Materials like carbon and silicon are extremely versatile," explained Mr. Jitendra Singh, Distinguished Fellow, IIT Alumni Council. "Carbon ranges from diamonds to coal, graphene superconductors to carbon insulators--depending on its structure. Silicon, when doped, transforms into a semiconductor. Together, carbon and silicon form silicon carbide, a key candidate for low-cost inverters and devices. We are also exploring zero-gap semiconductors, which could disrupt industries like energy storage, HVAC, and turbine manufacturing through new architectures like high-efficiency thermoelectric generators (TEGs) and Peltier-based cooling systems."
A Turning Point in Green Chemistry:
"AI's most visible early contribution to materials science is here," added Mr. Shashi Shekhar, environmentalist and former Secretary, Ministry of Water & Ganga Rejuvenation. "When combined with additive manufacturing and Industry 4.0, this opens the door to safe, sustainable, and high-performance materials. These can even replace corroding materials like ToR steel or expensive ones like food-grade stainless steel."
Shashi Shekhar, who now serves as Vice Chairman of Acme Group, noted that the Government of India's Green Hydrogen Mission is pushing for decarbonization of the steel industry.
"By aligning with the IIT Alumni Council, we plan to develop green steel alloys that are cost-effective, sustainable, and suitable for high-performance applications like additive manufacturing and specialized equipment."
Industry Progress and Global Partnerships:
Recently, Outokumpu delivered its first batch of specialty powdered stainless steel for 3D printing applications such as heat exchangers and aerospace components.
"It's remarkable that the IIT Alumni Council foresaw this trend and began building the ecosystem early--spanning AI-driven material innovation to carbon-free green steel production," said Mr. Y.P.S. Suri, former MD of Outokumpu India and IIT Kharagpur alumnus. "We are entering a new paradigm. I look forward to seeing the world's first process plant built entirely through additive manufacturing."
Gratitude to Visionary Contributors:
"The development of the AMAT AI Platform wouldn't be possible without the unwavering support of India's top corporations and visionary leaders," said Satish Mehta, Convenor of the IIT Alumni Social Fund.
He acknowledged contributions from:
Tata Group, Birla Group, Jindal Group, L & T, Reliance, Adani, ArcelorMittal, Ocior, Acme, Coal India, HPCL, among others.
He also thanked key members of the National Solar Task Force, including:
Padma Shri Prof. Ashok Jhunjhunwala, Prof. Juzer Vasi, Prof. Dinesh Kabra, and Prof. Anil Kottanthayil, for their guidance in the context of photovoltaics.
A special mention was made for the Distinguished Fellows of the IIT Alumni Council, including:
AI Chief Mentor Prof. Jyoti Joglekar and Silicon Valley collaborators Dr. Rohinton Dehmubed and Dr. Milind Kulkarni
"Their thousands of hours of effort and deep domain expertise have been instrumental. We thank each one of them."

AI Impact Summit will be held at Bharat Mandapam during Feb 19–20

The AI Impact Summit, which India will host next year, is scheduled for February 19–20 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. The two-day event is expected to draw heads of State and top executives from major technology companies, with names like Sam Altman and Sundar Pichai on the list. However, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is not expected to attend, HT has learnt, with the company likely to be represented by its chief technology officer instead. Bharat Mandapam. (PTI File Photo) 'Just as the Paris summit was called the AI Action Summit, the India edition is being branded the AI Impact Summit, signalling a shift from 'action' to 'impact,'' said a person aware of the preparations at the ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY). 'The idea is to acknowledge the impact AI has had over the past decade, draw lessons from it, and then outline the action points for the year ahead.' The person cited above also explained the symbolism of the AI Summit logo, which centres on the overarching theme of People, Planet, Progress - the three 'sutras.' In the design, the globe represents the Planet, an orange curve at the upper right signifies People, and a green curve below it denotes Progress. Encircling the globe on the left are seven green dots, symbolising the Summit's smaller themes, or 'Chakras,' namely Human Capital, Inclusion, Safe and Trusted AI, Resilience, Science, Democratizing AI Resources, and Social Good. These Chakras are further ringed by 14 orange dots, representing the 14 official events to be organised by the government in India. Held in the run-up to the Summit and based on the seven smaller themes, these 14 events will shape the joint declaration that participating heads of state will sign. 'The India AI Mission plans to invite a select group of domestic and international participants to discuss the seven themes in 14 sittings, similar to the format used at the G20 Summit, and identify elements that could be incorporated into the declaration. It will be a townhall setting and rules,' the person said. Besides this, the government has said it is open to proposals from anyone wishing to contribute to the conversation around AI, inviting them to bring their topics under the Summit's umbrella. In the lead-up to the event, it plans to host 250 pre-events across locations in India and abroad and has issued a call for proposals on the AI Summit website. Organisers of these pre-events can hold panel discussions, submit reports on their deliberations, and suggest inputs for inclusion in the Summit's joint declaration, subject to government review. Approved proposals can receive up to ₹2,00,000 for domestic events and ₹5,00,000 for international ones, with funds disbursed only after the event's completion and submission of required reports and invoices. 'The government will enable the hosting of these side-events across the country under the umbrella of the seven themes and enable citizen participation across the country. We don't want it to become a Delhi thing,' said the person quoted above. 'We are hoping these 250 meetings are enabled by private entities, NGOs, academicians, and individuals." India will revise the previous declaration from France, aligning it with the current themes and incorporating inputs from the 14 meetings as well as public contributions, added the person aware of the matter. What will the two days - February 19 and 20 - look like? The Summit will feature not only government participation but also active involvement from the private sector and citizens, with all three components woven into the programme. Leaders will convene in the summit hall to negotiate and finalise the joint declaration, while also holding multilateral and bilateral meetings on-site. Citizen engagement will take place through a large-scale expo showcasing the impact of AI, featuring not just Indian tech players but also participants from across the Global South. The expo will showcase not only large language models (LLMs) but also small language models (SLMs) and sector-specific AI solutions, allowing visitors to discover innovations from other countries and consider their applicability at home. The Summit will also host research symposiums highlighting the latest advancements in the field. It remains unclear which country will host the next AI Summit, though several nations, including Switzerland, have expressed interest.

AI finally begins retrofit of legacy wide body planes; to complete task by October 2028

. NEW DELHI: Air India has finally started the upgrade programme for its legacy wide fleet with the Boeing 787 Dreamliners and the task is now expected to be complete by Oct 2028, 'with the timeline having shifted due to supply chain delays'. In its last few cash-starved state-owned years, Air India had no funds to spend on cabin maintenance or upkeep and a poor in-flight experience on those planes remains among the biggest irritants for passengers of long haul flights on which these planes are deployed. After taking over AI in January 2022, the Tata Group had announced a $ 400 million fleet retrofit programme 'to delivering a world class flying experience and enhancing operational reliability across its legacy fleet.' However, due to supply chain issues the work has taken longer than originally expected. 'Air India has commenced the widebody retrofit programme for its legacy B787-8 aircraft, with the first of 26 aircraft (VT-ANT) having flown to a Boeing facility in Victorville, California, in July 2025. A second aircraft is scheduled to depart for the same facility in October 2025, with both expected to return to service in December 2025. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Medical Mystery Solved: Dementia and Memory Loss Has Been Linked To This Common Thing. Memory Health Click Here Undo The retrofit programme for Air India's B787-8s, now on a steady schedule for completion by mid-2027, will introduce brand-new interiors featuring a three-class configuration with business class, premium economy, and economy Class seats. This includes the installation of brand-new seats in each cabin, advanced in-flight entertainment (IFE) systems, new carpeting, curtains, upholstery, lavatories, galleys and more - all aligned with the new Air India product and customer experience standards,' AI said in a statement. Starting early 2027, AI will additionally retrofit 13 of its legacy Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, aiming for completion by October 2028, with the timeline having shifted due to supply chain delays. As part of a reliability enhancement programme, AI says it will upgrade the avionics and other critical components of the 26 legacy B787-8 aircraft. 'The programme entails the analysis of maintenance and configuration records for these aircraft, followed by the implementation of recommended modifications based on Boeing's service information bulletins. This is intended to reduce operational disruptions for both, Air India and its customers,' AI said. Additionally, seven of the 26 B787-8s will undergo heavy, scheduled maintenance (D-checks) at Victorville. Narrowbody retrofit programme for 27 legacy A320neo aircraft: AI says this commenced last September. It 'is progressing per schedule, with completion targeted in Sept 2025. The addition of a third line at GMR's MRO in Hyderabad has expedited the process. To date, 15 A320neo aircraft have been retrofitted, with the 15th aircraft having returned to service on August 9, 2025, and the 16th aircraft scheduled to return to service on August 11, 2025. The remaining 11 A320neo will be retrofitted by September 2025,' AI statement said. The upgraded A320neo aircraft that have all-new cabins are being progressively deployed on key domestic and short-haul international routes.
