Students prefer industry-relevant curriculum over brand

In a shift from traditional preferences, students and parents are increasingly prioritising institutions offering industry-relevant courses, over institutional legacy or brand name.
This was witnessed at an awareness meeting conducted in Tirupati on Sunday by Hyderabad-based Mahindra University. The attendees — undergraduate aspirants along with their parents showed strong support in favour of a curriculum designed in consultation with industry experts and faculty having reputed credentials.
Mahindra University, backed by the Mahindra Group, offers multi-disciplinary education across engineering, education, law, management, design and hospitality. Ahead of the ensuing academic year, outreach programmes were conducted at Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Rajamahendravaram, Guntur, Tirupati, and Nellore. Interestingly, for the first time the event was held in Tirupati.
Speaking to The Hindu on the sidelines of the event, Head (Marketing and Admissions), Rakesh Sreedharan, Mahindra University said: 'Our curriculum is customised to meet industry demands. We have an academic collaboration with eight international universities. Our state-of-the-art infrastructure and industrial exposure, powered by the Mahindra group's backing, directly reflects placement opportunities.'
He added that while a majority of undergraduate students prioritise placements, a sizeable number opt for post-graduation. 'The number of students aspiring to become entrepreneurs is small, and rising,' he said, pointing to the presence of an impressive incubation infrastructure on the campus, meant to help startups from the stage of ideation to marketing.
The universitiy's admission process concludes in the first week of July and classes will commence in the first week of August.

Moodbidri: The 15th edition of Alva's Pragati, a major employment fair hosted at the Vidyagiri campus in Moodbidri, concluded with 2,873 candidates receiving immediate job offers and 3,734 others being shortlisted for subsequent rounds. A total of 288 companies participated in the two-day event, with 260 of them selecting candidates for further recruitment processes. The fair attracted 14,245 job seekers from across India. Among the notable recruiters, Dubai-based Fortune Group offered jobs to five candidates with annual salaries ranging between ₹5–8 lakh and shortlisted 25 others. Narayana Health selected 43 candidates and shortlisted 28 for final interviews, while Zee Entertainment shortlisted 11 candidates for its concluding round. Saudi Arabia-based Expertise Group hired 37 candidates, offering transportation and accommodation benefits. Mumbai-based Allcargo Logistics recruited nine candidates for positions with annual pay ranging from ₹3–5 lakh. Tejaswini Groups hired 11 candidates with an annual package of ₹6 lakh. Infosys BPM selected 79 candidates. CodeYoung hired 20 candidates, offering annual compensation between ₹4.36 and ₹8.36 lakh. K12 Techno Services extended direct offers to 42 candidates with salaries up to ₹6 lakh per annum. Alva's Pragati has emerged as one of the largest private-sector employment initiatives in the region, facilitating direct engagement between job aspirants and employers from diverse sectors.

Kothari Industrial Corporation acquires Zodiz, Jeetlo to strengthen mass footwear presence

KICL, the flagship company of the diversified D C Kothari Group, acquired footwear brands Zodiz and Jeetlo for an undisclosed sum, further expanding its presence in the mass-market footwear segment, an official said. Kothari Industrial Corporation Ltd had previously acquired noted overseas brands, including Kickers, and has set up a non-leather footwear park in Tamil Nadu's Perambalur district. The acquisition of Zodiz and Jeetlo, along with their associated sub-brands, will come into effect from August 4, 2025, the company said in a statement on Zodiz brand is promoted by Coimbatore-based Zaimus Trends Pvt Ltd and is known for its affordable footwear promoted by Haryana-based India Pvt Ltd, has a strong presence across e-commerce platforms. The acquisition is expected to provide KICL with a firm foothold in underserved and fast-growing consumer segments.
