Tejashwi bats for stronger EBC representation in Bihar assembly polls
PATNA: Bihar Opposition leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav on Saturday appealed to the public to give him a chance by voting in a Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) government in the upcoming October-November assembly elections.
Speaking at the EBC Jagao Rally in the state capital, Tejashwi said that if the Grand Alliance comes to power, his government would take swift action against wrongdoers, jail the corrupt, and deal firmly with criminals.
Hitting out at the NDA government led by chief minister Nitish Kumar, the former deputy chief minister said that corruption was at its peak and criminals were ruling the roost. The government has failed to deliver justice to people, he alleged.
He exhorted people to uproot the 20-year-old government in Bihar, which has lost both its credibility and relevance. 'This is the right time to uproot the NDA government. The new government will give due representation and dignity to extremely backward classes (EBCs),' he asserted.
He exuded confidence that NDA would not return to power in 2025 assembly elections.
'People will change this 'khatara' government,' he said, adding that the majority of people who migrate from Bihar to other states in search of livelihood were from EBC. He claimed that people were fed up with rising incidents of crime and corruption prevalent in government offices. 'No work is done in the government offices without paying bribes to the officials and employees. But the government is silent on the issue,' he claimed.

Mithila's Suri community intensifies demand for inclusion in EBCs
Madhubani: People from Suri community, a sub-caste of Vaishya in Mithilanchal region, have intensified their campaign demanding their inclusion in the Extremely Backward Class (EBCs) by the state govt. In the 2020 elections, the NDA performed well in these areas. Talking to this newspaper over phone on Wednesday, Arun Shankar Prasad, BJP MLA from Khajauli (Madhubani), said that when sub-castes like Teli, Halwai and others of the Vaishya community were included the EBC category in 2015, Suri (sub-caste) was left out. The present campaign is to rectify that anomaly, he added. As per the 2022 caste survey, the percentage of EBCs in Bihar's population is 36.01%. Suris, traditionally, have been BJP supporters and they feel their inclusion in the EBC category would grant them access to reservation benefits in education and jobs, particularly after the Union cabinet gave its assent for the caste census. Political observers believe if the demand is ignored by the state govt, caste equations may undergo a change in coming assembly elections. Though, traditionally with BJP-led NDA, majority of Suri community voters may shift towards the Mahagathbandhan or opt for caste-candidates even if not a winning horse in the coming assembly elections.

Ridiculing the YSR Congress Party's (YSRCP) idea of observing 'Vennupotu Dinam' to mark the formation of one year of the NDA government, Bheemunipatnam MLA Ganta Srinivasa Rao stated that the YSRCP president, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, appears to have learned nothing from the party's recent electoral defeat. Addressing a press conference at his residence in the city on Wednesday (May 4, 2025), Mr Ganta Srinivasa Rao said that typically, when a political party loses an election, their leader assesses the reasons behind the loss, conducts meetings with the cadre, and prepares strategies to rebuild public trust. However, in the case of Mr. Reddy, it seems like he believes the people committed a mistake by not voting for him. The former CM is unable to accept the fact that people have rejected him, he added. Mr. Srinivasa Rao alleged that over the past week, the YSRCP leaders have been staging unnecessary drama in the name of 'Vennupotu Dinam'. He also questioned the YSRCP leaders, what exactly is the purpose behind 'Vennupotu Dinam'. 'Is it to restart the Amaravati capital works that the YSRCP halted in the name of three capitals? Is it to secure funds for the Polavaram project or to bring the Prime Minister to Andhra Pradesh to lay the foundation for development projects worth thousands of crores?', he questioned. He further asked, 'Is it to revive the long-pending Metro Rail project or establish the Railway Zone which the YSRCP neglected? Is it to arrange a ₹12,000 crore financial package for the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP), to which the former CM did not make a single attempt to protect it from privatisation?' The Bheemunipatnam MLA also dared the YSRCP leaders to come for a constructive debate on the implementation of promises made in their manifesto, instead of organising events like 'Vennupotu Dinam,' which he opined as meaningless. The MLA also criticised former CM Mr. Reddy, stating that the previous government took five years to raise pensions by just ₹1,000. He also accused the YSRCP of failing to fulfil major promises, such as liquor prohibition, the release of a job calendar, and a few others. He also stated that in the last one year, under the NDA government, several important assurances have already been implemented, including the Mega DSC recruitment drive, the revival of Anna Canteens, abolition of Land Titling Act, distribution of free LPG cylinders through the Deepam scheme, increase in pensions.
