Tejashwi blames EC for dual EPIC card

Patna: As the Election Commission (EC) asked the leader of opposition in the Bihar assembly, Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, to respond to allegations that he holds two EPIC numbers, the RJD leader on Thursday hit out at the poll body, accusing it of attempting to pin on him a mistake committed by its own officials. Speaking to reporters in Patna before departing for New Delhi to attend a key INDIA bloc meeting, Tejashwi said, "Whose lapse is it if two EPIC numbers were issued to me?... Matlab galti khud karen aur explanation hamse mangege (They make the mistake themselves and are seeking an explanation from me)?" He added, "Achha jawab ham denge (I'll send a good reply)." He denied receiving any notice from the EC itself. "I haven't got any notice from the EC, although it has come from the electoral registration officer," he clarified. Dismissing the allegation, he questioned the EC's intent in attempting to hold him accountable for the duplication of EPIC. The former deputy CM issued his response a day after receiving a second notice from the authorities, instructing him to reply by Friday, Aug 8. The notice was served by the sub-divisional magistrate of Patna Sadar, who also acts as the electoral registration officer (ERO) for the Digha assembly constituency. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Things You Should Stop Wearing After 40 Undo In the letter, the ERO reminded Tejashwi that he had earlier been asked to submit the details of his EPIC, along with the original copy, for a detailed investigation. However, the documents have not been provided yet. "So, you are again requested to provide all the details by Friday so that a detailed investigation could be conducted," the ERO said. The second notice followed Tejashwi's press conference on Aug 2, where he claimed his name had been omitted from the voter list. During the conference, he cited EPIC number RAB2916120 to support his assertion. Shortly thereafter, on Aug 3, the EC served its first notice. The Patna district administration also issued a rebuttal, releasing a screenshot of the draft electoral rolls showing the names and photographs of both Tejashwi and his father, RJD president Lalu Prasad, confirming their inclusion. EC sets Aug 8 deadline for Tejashwi to give reply

Patna: The Election Commission on Wednesday served a second notice to leader of opposition in state assembly Tejashwi Prasad Yadav , seeking a reply by Friday over allegations of holding two elector's photo identity card (EPIC). Sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) of Patna Sadar, who also is the electoral registration officer (ERO) for the Digha assembly constituency, said through a notice Tejashwi has been told to provide details of his EPIC card along with the original copy of the card. However, till today he did not provide the required details. "So, you are again requested to make available all information to the undersigned along with the original copy of the EPIC card that you cited at a press conference, by Friday noon for a thorough investigation into the matter," the ERO said in the letter. Tejashwi came under fire after he alleged at a press conference on Aug 2 that his name was missing from the electoral rolls, citing his ID card bearing EPIC number RAB2916120, but the EC rubbished his allegation soon with a proof. "Upon verification, it was found that his name figures at serial number 416 of polling station number 204, located in the library building of Bihar Veterinary College, and his EPIC number is RAB0456228," the EC said in its reply.

Tejashwi promises reply to EC's notice on two EPICs

Patna: Leader of opposition in the state assembly, Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, on Tuesday said he would send his reply to the Election Commission 's notice over allegedly possessing two EPICs. He also took potshots at the poll body while his father, RJD president, remained tight-lipped over alleged discrepancies in the draft electoral rolls. The EC clarified that not a single claim or objection was filed by any political party in the past five days since the draft electoral rolls were published on Aug 1. Talking to reporters here on Tuesday before leaving for Jharkhand to attend the funeral of JMM founder Shibu Soren, Tejashwi said he would send his reply to the EC's notice. "Jawab diya jayega…Kaun si badi chiz hai (The reply will be given but what's the big deal in it)?" Alleging large-scale irregularities in the preparation of electoral rolls, Tejashwi said the RJD was also compiling the multiple discrepancies in the list, which would be sent both to the EC as well as the court. "We have demanded booth-wise data from the EC since many names have been deliberately excluded. In some houses, over 50 voters have been added. These are not minor errors, but serious irregularities. We will send this evidence to the Election Commission and also submit it to the court," Tejashwi said. His remarks came amid the row that Tejashwi possesses dual EPIC. The EC, while taking the matter seriously, has issued a notice to him, asking him to provide the original copy of the EPIC number that he claimed was deleted from the voter's list, for a thorough probe into the matter. The EC said no claim or objection has been submitted by any political party so far. "The EC is repeatedly stating that no eligible elector should be left out and no ineligible elector should be included in the final electoral roll of Bihar. Submit your claims and objections to rectify any errors in the draft electoral roll of Bihar published on Aug 1," the EC said in a press statement on Tuesday. It added that so far not even a single claim or objection has been submitted by any political party in the past five days since the draft roll was published. Meanwhile, on Monday, a complaint was registered by an advocate, Rajiv Ranjan, with the Digha police station in Patna, seeking an investigation into the "issuance of two voter ID cards" to Tejashwi. "We have forwarded the complaint to the district election office, which is the competent authority to decide on such matters. An FIR may be lodged if such a direction is received from the poll authorities," a police officer told the reporters. The advocate has requested that appropriate legal action be initiated in the matter.

Voter ID Tejashwi flaunted at press conference comes under poll body's lens

The Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) of Bihar's Digha Assembly constituency on Sunday formally wrote to Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, seeking details of the EPIC (Electors Photo Identity Card) number he cited during a press conference held on Saturday, during which he claimed that his name had been removed from the draft electoral rolls published last week. In the letter, the officer said that the number on the voter ID that Tejashwi had presented during his press conference does not appear to be an officially issued EPIC number. The officer said that the RJD leader's name was in the electoral rolls, but under a different EPIC number. The letter requested Tejashwi to furnish the details and the original copy of the EPIC card he referred to in his press interaction to enable a detailed inquiry. This follows a clarification issued earlier by the Patna district administration, saying that Yadav's name had not been removed from the rolls. Officials said that his name, which was previously listed in polling station number 171 at serial number 481, is now listed in polling station number 204 at serial number 416 — both polling stations are located in the same premises. Election Commission sources said that Tejashwi's EPIC number which is in the draft rolls has been consistently associated with him since at least 2015, and was used by him during the 2020 Assembly elections while filing nomination papers. Officials also said that extensive checks of electoral databases over the last 10 years have not revealed any record of the EPIC number on the card that he presented during his press conference.

Bihar LoP Tejashwi Yadav under ECI's scrutiny after 'second EPIC' surfaces

PATNA: Bihar Opposition leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav seems to have landed in trouble after a second EPIC (election photo identity card) issued in his name came to light on Saturday. Election Commission of India (ECI) is said to have ordered an investigation to ascertain if second EPIC issued to Tejashwi was forged. The poll body said that 'second EPIC' was not made through official channels. EPIC is issued by ECI to eligible voters, and serves as identity proof. On Saturday, Tejashwi told the media that when he searched for his details using EPIC number RAB2916120 on the Election Commission's portal, his name did not appear. 'How can I contest elections when my name is missing from the electoral rolls,' he asked.
