Voter ID Tejashwi flaunted at press conference comes under poll body's lens

Indian Express17 hours ago
The Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) of Bihar's Digha Assembly constituency on Sunday formally wrote to Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, seeking details of the EPIC (Electors Photo Identity Card) number he cited during a press conference held on Saturday, during which he claimed that his name had been removed from the draft electoral rolls published last week.
In the letter, the officer said that the number on the voter ID that Tejashwi had presented during his press conference does not appear to be an officially issued EPIC number. The officer said that the RJD leader's name was in the electoral rolls, but under a different EPIC number.
The letter requested Tejashwi to furnish the details and the original copy of the EPIC card he referred to in his press interaction to enable a detailed inquiry.
This follows a clarification issued earlier by the Patna district administration, saying that Yadav's name had not been removed from the rolls. Officials said that his name, which was previously listed in polling station number 171 at serial number 481, is now listed in polling station number 204 at serial number 416 — both polling stations are located in the same premises.
Election Commission sources said that Tejashwi's EPIC number which is in the draft rolls has been consistently associated with him since at least 2015, and was used by him during the 2020 Assembly elections while filing nomination papers.
Officials also said that extensive checks of electoral databases over the last 10 years have not revealed any record of the EPIC number on the card that he presented during his press conference.

Nitish Kumar announces domicile policy for Bihar teacher jobs before polls

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday announced a 'domicile policy' in the recruitment of government teachers. The CM, however, did not specify what percentage of recruitments was to be reserved for those born and raised in the state. The announcement came ahead of the assembly elections in the state, which are due this year. "The Education Department has been directed to make necessary amendments to the relevant rules to give priority to the residents (domicile) of Bihar in the recruitment of teachers," Kumar said in a post on X. "Since the formation of the government in November 2005, we have been continuously working to improve the education system. A large number of teachers have been appointed to strengthen the education system," he said. This will be implemented from the Teachers Recruitment Exam (TRE)-4, which will be conducted this year, while TRE-5 will be held in 2026, the chief minister said. Instructions have also been given to conduct Secondary Teachers Eligibility Test (STET) before the organisation of TRE-5, he said. Recently, amid growing clamour for a 'domicile policy' in Bihar, the Bihar Cabinet ordered that a quota of 35 per cent for women in government jobs will be restricted to only 'permanent residents' of the state. In 2016, the state government introduced 35 per cent reservation for women in government jobs in the state at all levels. Notably, the state has been witnessing attempts at public mobilisation on the issue of domicile, ahead of assembly elections. Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav has promised '100 per cent domicile' if the RJD comes to power. Union minister Chirag Paswan also came out in support of the demand for domicile a couple of days ago, but called into question the RJD's commitment to the issue. A large number of job aspirants staged a protest in Patna on August 1, demanding the implementation of a domicile policy in government jobs and had blocked movement of traffic. Police complaint lodged over 'two voter ID cards' of Tejashwi Yadav

A complaint was lodged at a police station in Patna seeking an investigation into "issuance of two voter ID cards" in favour of RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, an officer said. The development took place a day after the Election Commission asked Yadav to hand over for investigation a voter ID card that he claimed to be in possession of despite having been not issued officially. The EC said the opposition leader's EPIC card number was not changed as alleged by him. The police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the complaint, filed by a local, was received at the Digha Police station. "We have forwarded the complaint to the District Election Office, which is the competent authority to decide on such matters. An FIR may be lodged if such a direction is received from the poll authorities," said the officer. Yadav, the Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar assembly, recently alleged that the Election Commission has 'changed' his EPIC number in the draft electoral rolls published as part of Special Intensive Revision in the state. On Saturday, he demonstrated an online search, with the EPIC number, to claim that his name was missing in the draft electoral rolls published as part of special intensive revision (SIR) and, upon rebuttal from the authorities concerned, alleged that his voter ID card number was changed. The EC has rejected the charge, pointing out that the EPIC number remained the same as stated by Yadav in his affidavit for the 2020 assembly elections. In a related incident, a Booth Level Officer (BLO) in Begusarai district has been placed under suspension for an oversight which resulted in an individual's name appearing in the draft electoral rolls twice. The incident pertains to Sahebpur Kamal assembly segment, which was in the news recently when a journalist was slapped with an FIR for running a report highlighting alleged irregularities in the SIR exercise.
