Bihar LoP Tejashwi Yadav under ECI's scrutiny after 'second EPIC' surfaces

PATNA: Bihar Opposition leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav seems to have landed in trouble after a second EPIC (election photo identity card) issued in his name came to light on Saturday.
Election Commission of India (ECI) is said to have ordered an investigation to ascertain if second EPIC issued to Tejashwi was forged. The poll body said that 'second EPIC' was not made through official channels.
EPIC is issued by ECI to eligible voters, and serves as identity proof.
On Saturday, Tejashwi told the media that when he searched for his details using EPIC number RAB2916120 on the Election Commission's portal, his name did not appear. 'How can I contest elections when my name is missing from the electoral rolls,' he asked.

Election Commission Uses India's 6-Run Win Against England To Encourage Voting

Thirteen months ago, when India beat South Africa in the final of the ICC World T20, Mohammad Siraj, in an after-match interview, said: "I only believe in Jassi bhai". On Monday, when he walked onto The Oval, England needed 35 runs to win, and they had four wickets in hand. Siraj, who didn't play that final against the Proteas in June 2024, didn't have Jasprit Bumrah with him today. And he told himself: "Believe in yourself." He picked up a fifer and India beat England by six runs to win the fifth and final Test of the series. What looked like a sure-shot English victory on day four turned into a dramatic collapse as Siraj led India to one of the most thrilling comebacks in recent memory. With this win, India levelled the five-match series 2-2, capping off an unforgettable contest. And much like the fans, the Election Commission has tapped into the excitement surrounding the win to promote democratic participation, comparing the win to voting. "Team India wins the 5th Test by just 6 runs! Edge-of-the-seat stuff, because every run is a game-changer. In a democracy, every vote counts just as much. Every eligible elector must enrol in the electoral roll!" they wrote on X. ???? Team India wins the 5th Test by just 6 runs! Edge-of-the-seat stuff, because every run is a game-changer. In a democracy, every vote counts just as much. ✅ Every Eligible Elector must Enroll in the Electoral Roll! ???? @BCCI #INDvsENGTest #OvalTest #TeamIndia #SIR #Bihar — Election Commission of India (@ECISVEEP) August 4, 2025 Enrolling in the electoral roll means registering yourself as a voter in the country's official list of eligible voters. The Commission's message comes as it carries out a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in Bihar, ahead of state assembly elections due later this year. The drive, which saw a 99.8 per cent participation, collected around 7.24 crore registration forms. The revision led to the removal of approximately 65.6 lakh names from the rolls, mainly classified as dead, duplicate, migrated, or untraceable, leaving 7.24 crore electors in the draft list released on August 1. Opposition parties have slammed the exclusion of Aadhaar, Voter ID (EPIC), and ration cards as valid documents in the voter roll revision process. The Supreme Court is currently hearing the case and has warned it will intervene if it detects large-scale removal of eligible voters. Earlier, the Court directed the Election Commission to accept these commonly used IDs during the SIR. Coming back to the match, the fifth Test match delivered high drama as England, chasing a formidable target of 374, were in cruise control mode. With tons from Joe Root and Harry Brook, the hosts crossed the 300-run mark and seemed well on course for a memorable win. A stunning reversal followed. Mohammed Siraj delivered a fiery spell, tightening the screws when it mattered most. England's batting order crumbled under pressure, losing their last seven wickets for only 66 runs. Finishing the match, India bowled them out for 367, securing victory by a razor-thin margin of six runs, their narrowest in red ball cricket. AIMIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi also celebrated Mohammed Siraj's stellar performance with a tweet in Hyderabadi slang, " Poora khol diye Pasha," meaning Siraj was at his absolute best. The fast bowler, who took 23 wickets in the five-match series and five in the final innings, was named Man of the Match.

Voter ID card issue The Leader of the Opposition in Bihar, Tejashwi Yadav, ought to have verified his previous records as far as his voter ID is concerned. There seems to have been a 'mixup of sorts'. Therefore, he would have to cooperate with the Election Commission of India (ECI). As far as the revision of electoral rolls in Bihar is concerned, is the entire bloc of Opposition parties agitated over the potential loss of vote banks after the intensive revision of electoral rolls? Govardhana Myneedu, Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh Pulling off a win The Indian cricket team has pulled off an incredible victory over experienced opponent England at the Oval. The energetic Indian team deserves fulsome credit. The team's success was also made possible due to sedulous care of the coach. K. Chellappan, Seattle, U.S. Cynicism about the survival and the future of five-day Tests is baseless. The road ahead for this old and original format of cricket is as safe and bright as its new and modern versions. M.V. Nagavender Rao, Hyderabad

10 lakh of 17 lakh Gopalganj voter forms have no supporting documents: District Election Officer

A significant number of enumeration forms in Gopalganj, Bihar, were submitted without necessary documents. The District Election Officer revealed that over 10 lakh forms lacked proof. Similar issues are emerging across other districts. Authorities are assisting electors in gathering documents. The Election Commission has shifted focus to form submission, allowing document submission later. Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads As many as 10.4 lakh of the total 17.4 lakh enumeration forms submitted on time in Gopalganj district did not have any document of proof attached, a press release issued on August 1 by the District Election Officer (DEO) of Gopalganj Gopalganj, only 1.3 lakh enumeration forms were submitted with one of the 11 documents prescribed by the Election Commission (ECI) in its June 24 order on Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. 54,944 forms were submitted with a document other than the 11 documents, as per the gathers that there are similar issues across districts with reasonably high submission of enumeration forms but without the prescribed documents. District collectors are pulling out all stops to 'assist' such electors with documents so that when their case lands with the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) for a final scrutiny, they can make it to the final electoral trend bears out clearly across the six assembly constituencies in Gopalganj Hathua assembly constituency, the figure is staggering. Of the total 2.8 lakh EFs submitted, as many as 2.1 lakh were without any document, just 14,918 have an ECI prescribed document attached and 2,998 have added some other the 2.9 lakh enumeration forms received, in Baikunthpur seat,1.45 lakh are without any document; in Barauli, 1.5 lakh of the total 2.7 lakh forms submitted are backed with no document of proof. "Yes, there are several such cases of electors whose forms have come but not with the documents required. However, this list is coming down every day as BLOs are going from house to house to reach all such electors and help them with the documents. We have also brought out the Mahadalit Vikas register and SC/ST family registers to specifically help the disadvantaged sections make it to the rolls. Also, it must be noted that the ERO has the right to assess each elector's details based on field enquiry and other inputs to decide on electoral roll entry . We are quite positive that all eligible electors will make it to the final roll," a district election officer of a district with lakhs of such cases told major concerns over the inability of electors to furnish the ECI prescribed documents of proof of birth for themselves and parents (in some categories), the poll panel had shifted its focus to submission of forms by July 25 -- even without documents -- and submit them later during the claims and objections period over the month of August for the ERO to assess.
