More health hikes on way, but some cheaper plans being launched

Price rises are coming almost monthly, prompting a slowdown in the numbers taking out health insurance.
However, Laya is cutting the premium on one of its corporate plans and launching new schemes, bucking a trend that has seen regular rises in the cost of all the providers' plans.
Irish Life Health is also introducing six new corporate plans from the start of next month.
Health insurance expert Dermot Goode, of Total Health Cover, said insurers were fearful the relentless price rises would force people to give up their cover, and were now attempting to address the affordability issue.
Earlier this month, VHI Healthcare increased the cost of one of its corporate plans, and in March it increased the cost of a string of plans. At the time, it was the third premium hike in less than a year.
Corporate plans must be made available to individuals and families if they want to buy one
Experts said those combined hikes could add as much as €500 to the annual cost of cover for a typical family. This is similar to last year's rises.
From the start of August, VHI will increase the cost of seven corporate plans that were not included in the increases announced in March.
The increases range from 2pc to 10pc, with the impact on a family of four to be between €75 and €506 a year for households renewing on the same plans.
Mr Goode said plans going up include PMI 4015 and PMI 4510. PMI 6310, which has only recently been launched, is also affected.
Corporate plans are marketed to companies that pay for the health cover of their staff, but under law must be made available to individuals and families if they want to buy one.

They tend to be cheaper and have better benefits than plans targeted at families and individuals.
'As always, the advice is never to accept these changes without first contacting VHI to see if they have a similar alternative plan at a lower cost,' Mr Goode said.
'Tell the insurer your budget for the coming year and challenge them to find a similar plan that matches same.'
VHI said: 'The price changes are for a select number of corporate plans only. The timing of price changes for these plans differs from the general book of business. We announced an average price increase of 3pc across our plans from March 1.'
VHI is also launching a new corporate plan called PMI 6510 from August, priced at €1,544 per adult and €383 per child.
Insurers were taking specific steps to address the affordability issue in the market
Laya is decreasing the cost of one of its corporate schemes and also launching Core Connect, which Mr Goode said is a good semi-private corporate plan.
The cost will fall from €1,741 to €1,657 per adult, a 5pc reduction.
Laya is also launching a new plan called Inspire Assist, priced at €1,545 per adult and €356 per child.
Irish Life Health is introducing six new corporate plans from Friday, called Health Action 1 through to Health Action 6. Health Action 1 is €1,300 per adult and €336 for a child.
Mr Goode said insurers were taking specific steps to address the affordability issue in the market.
However, he added that consumers need to brace themselves for potentially more increases later in the year.

Health Insurance Expert Dermot Goode said the hikes were 'expected as they're following previous trends' of increasing rates twice per year - in April and October. Advertisement The previous increase was an average 6.6 per cent which occurred in April 2025. Mr Goode said: 'This average of this latest increase is 4.5 per cent. However, members need to be wary of these average figures as the actual increase on their plan may be significantly higher 'The reason for the increase is the rising cost of claims, especially from the private hospital sector. 'It appears that all insurers are still struggling to contain these costs especially as members want access to the new emerging treatments, drug therapies and technology.' Advertisement The insurance pro said some plans will not be increasing at all such as Assure Protect, Inspire and Inspire Plus. He said: 'The Signify Care scheme will increase by c. €54 per adult or €80 for a typical family, in line with the average. 'Other plans such as Simply Connect Plus will see a much higher increase, i.e. €289 for an adult or €716 for a family (12 per cent). 'Always disclose your budget and challenge the insurer to find you a similar cover that fits this.' OPTIONS All insurers including Laya will be launching a range of lower cost options to help consumers who will struggle to afford these hikes. Mr Goode added: 'Unfortunately more increases are expected as insurers look to review their rates in advance of the peak renewal period when half the market or c. 1.25 million members look to renew their cover 'These latest increases may be less for families as Laya is introducing some discounted offers for children under 18.' Advertisement Managing Director of Laya healthcare D.O O'Connor told RTE that the cost of delivering healthcare is "going up across the world, and Ireland is no exception". He said: "Demand for health services is at an all-time high, particularly in the private and hi-tech hospital settings where we're seeing a 14.8 per cent increase in 2025 claim costs (year-to-date) when compared to last year. "While advances in medical technology and new therapies are delivering welcome improvements in health outcomes for our members, this comes at the highest cost we've seen in over 25 years. "Our product review aims to strike a careful balance between delivering fast access to healthcare while safeguarding affordability of cover for our members. Laya Healthcare plans to increase by 4.5% on average from October

LAYA HEALTHCARE WILL increase its plans by an average of 4.5% from 1 October. It also plans to retire 10 existing plans, while introducing three new plans. However, a small number of plans will see price reductions, such as the adult and child rates of the 'Signify' plan and the 'Core Connect' plan. The Health Insurance Authority (HIA) today said that consumers will be informed of any changes to their plan, including any price or benefit changes, in their renewal letter. If you are a Laya customer, these price changes will affect you if you renew your policy on or after 1 October. If you are mid-contract, the cost of your insurance won't change on 1 October. A spokesperson for the HIA said the price increases are 'unwelcome, particularly during a time of rising living costs'. 'While insurers are free to set their prices based on commercial factors such as medical inflation and claims costs, affordability must remain a priority,' said the HIA. It encouraged consumers to shop around and to 'think about what benefits are most important to you'. Advertisement Retired plans If you are currently insured under a plan that will be retired, the HIA said you will be automatically moved to an equivalent plan at your renewal date. Consumers affected by this will be contacted directly and offered alternative plans with similar benefits. Under legislation, replacement plans must offer the same benefits, with only limited variation permitted. The HIA said it will review these replacements to ensure compliance and reminded consumers that they are not required to accept the replacement plan and can choose any plan available on the market. The HIA added that the above information is also of importance to some Irish Life Health customers as it will retire 22 plans from 1 September. 'Cost going up across the world' Managing Director of Laya healthcare D.O. O'Connor remarked that a review was 'necessary to meet the evolving healthcare needs of its members'. 'The cost of delivering healthcare is going up across the world, and Ireland is no exception,' said O'Connor. 'Demand for health services is at an all-time high, particularly in the private and hi-tech hospital settings where we're seeing a 14.8% increase in 2025 claim costs when compared to last year.' O'Connor added that advances in medical technology and new therapies come with a high cost and that the 'product review aims to strike a careful balance between delivering fast access to healthcare while safeguarding affordability of cover for our members'. Meanwhile, the HIA reminded consumers that they can avail of free and independent help, but using its free comparison tool at or by contacting the HIA by email at info@ or by phone at (01) 406 0080. Breaking Laya to increase health insurance prices from October

Laya Healthcare is to increase the prices of its health insurance polices by an average of 4.5% from the start of October. The provider, which has more than 700,000 customers, is also retiring ten of its existing policies. Customers will be informed of any changes affecting them when renewing their policies. Any price increases will only apply to new policies and renewals from October, with existing policyholders unaffected. Customers currently insured under one of Laya's plans being retired will be automatically moved to an equivalent plan at their renewal date. They will be contacted directly by the provider and offered alternative plans with similar benefits, which is a legal requirement. However, customers are not obliged to switch to a different plan and can choose to opt for a different plan with Laya or shop around with other health insurance providers. This is Laya's second price increase this year, after its health insurance policies went up by an average of 6.6% in April. Commenting on Laya's latest price-rise announcement, Health Insurance Expert Dermot Goode said "this was expected as they're following previous trends of increasing rates twice per year, i.e., in April and now in October. "This average of this latest increase is 4.5%. However, members need to be wary of these average figures as the actual increase on their plan may be significantly higher. "The reason for the increase is the rising cost of claims, especially from the private hospital sector. It appears that all insurers are still struggling to contain these costs especially as members want access to the new emerging treatments, drug therapies and technology," he added. According to an analysis of the increase by Mr Goode, some Laya plans will not be increasing at all such as 'Assure Protect', 'Inspire' and 'Inspire Plus'. While the 'Signify Care' scheme will increase by around €54 per adult or €80 for a typical family. Other plans, such as 'Simply Connect Plus' will see a much higher increase (12%), which equates to €289 for an adult or €716 for a family. (12%) Laya's 'Momentum' plan will increase by €283, or 10% for a single adult. Mr Goode said "the advice to all consumers now is to never just accept these increases ... don't allow your cover to auto-renew. "Members have six weeks now to engage with the insurer to source alternative, better value, cover. Always disclose your budget and challenge the insurer to find you similar cover that fits this."
