Amazon is switching its Fire tablets to Android, report claims

Vlad, 20 August 2025 Amazon's long-running line of Fire-branded tablets is going to go through some significant changes, according to a new report. The company is allegedly planning to move away from its own Fire OS (which is a fork of Android) and actually use Android proper. The first Fire tablet to run Android will arrive next year, and will cost $400, which is a much higher price point than what we're used to seeing Fire tablets go for. The switch to Android has apparently been a multiyear project for Amazon, and it comes as a consequence of the retailer basically hearing too many complaints from its customers about Fire OS. Obviously, Amazon is hoping that its tablet sales would jump significantly following the switch to Android. There is still a catch here, however. Amazon will be using the open source Android, so there won't be any Google apps preinstalled. Source

Google follows Apple's lead by dropping the physical SIM in most U.S. Pixel 10 series models

Well, it's official. The shiny new Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL have landed, and while everyone is buzzing about the new Tensor G5 chip and the impressive AI-powered camera tricks, there's a significant change in plain sight when you dive into the device specifications — or rather, the lack of something that's been there for years. For the first time, Google is removing the physical SIM card tray from most of its Pixel phones in the United States . It's a bold move, and honestly, it's a bit of a mixed bag. If you're in the U.S. and planning to pick up a Pixel 10 , 10 Pro, or 10 Pro XL, you'll be diving headfirst into the world of eSIMs. According to the device specs, these new models will feature Dual eSIM support, allowing you to have two active lines simultaneously and store multiple cellular profiles on the device. It's a clean, digital-only future for the main Pixel lineup. However, it's not a clean sweep across the board. The newly announced Pixel 10 Pro Fold will still come with a physical nano-SIM slot alongside its eSIM capability. Furthermore, if you're living outside the U.S.—in places like the UK, Canada, Germany, India, or Japan, among many others—your new Pixel 10 will also retain the familiar single nano-SIM tray plus eSIM this all sounds strangely familiar, it's because we've seen this playbook before. Apple made the exact same move back in 2022 with the release of the iPhone 14 in the U.S. market. The initial reaction was a combination of tech-world applause and consumer confusion. On one hand, eSIMs are objectively more secure. The Pixel 10 series (minus the Pixel 10 Pro Fold) are now the first Google phones without physical SIM card support. | Image credit — Google A thief can't just pop out your SIM card and take over your number. They also offer the convenience of switching carriers or activating international plans with a simple QR code scan or app download, no more fumbling with tiny plastic cards and ejector tools. For manufacturers, ditching the physical tray frees up precious internal space for other components. On the other hand, this transition isn't without its headaches, and it's indicative of how Google is going the Apple way when it comes to this. From my perspective, this is not great news for those who are used to swapping SIMs. In my field of mobile tech journalism, I have to switch phones constantly, and the ability to quickly move my primary line from one device to another via a physical SIM is crucial for efficient testing and daily use. This move complicates that workflow significantly. Gift The Tensor G5-powered Pixel 10 has just been announced, and it's already available for pre-order at Amazon with a sweet $100 gift card. Pre-order at Amazon The same goes for international travelers who might be used to buying a local prepaid SIM card at an airport kiosk for immediate, cheap data. While many international carriers now offer tourist eSIMs, the process isn't always as straightforward or universally available as a physical card. I know this is probably not an issue for the average person who buys a new phone, activates it with their carrier, and sticks with that single device for the long run. For them, the switch to eSIM will likely be a seamless, one-time setup process handled by their provider. But for a vocal minority of power users, testers, and travelers, this feels like a step back in flexibility. It forces a reliance on carrier apps and support systems, which can be a bit of a mess, rather than the simple, universal standard we've had for decades. The future is undoubtedly digital, but sometimes the old analog way of doing things has a convenience that's hard to replace. The Pixel 10 series is pushing us into that future, whether we're all ready for it or not. Good news everyone! Did google just accidentally leak a HomePod Mini competitor?

The dust has barely settled on the latest "Made by Google" keynote, and while everyone is busy talking about the new Pixel phones and the Pixel Watch, some with sharper eyes noticed something... odd. Front and center on a side table during the segment that featured F1 star Lando Norris, appeared a small, round speaker that looked suspiciously familiar. It was so familiar, in fact, that it caused a collective double-take. It looked almost exactly like an Apple HomePod Mini, except it couldn't be. F1 star Lando Norris sits beside a suspiciously looking smart speaker. | Image credit — The Verge Now, let's be perfectly clear: this was a Google event. There is absolutely no chance that the company would use a competitor's flagship smart speaker as set dressing. That just doesn't happen. So, what was it? The device we saw was a small, spherical speaker that seems to share the same fabric-covered aesthetic as the rest of Google's Nest lineup. Its diminutive size, however, immediately brings Apple's popular compact speaker to mind, which has left us with a lot of questions. The Apple HomePod Mini has carved out a successful niche for itself by offering surprisingly robust sound and deep Siri integration in a very small footprint. It acts as a smart home hub for HomeKit and fits seamlessly into Apple's ecosystem. Google's own Nest Mini is a great, affordable entry point for the Google Assistant, but it has never been praised for its audio prowess. It's a utility device first and a speaker second. If this mystery device is what we think it is, Google could be preparing to launch a direct competitor to the HomePod Mini—a compact speaker that doesn't compromise on sound. Companies know that eagle-eyed fans will scrutinize every frame of their presentations, and this feels like a deliberate, soft tease of a future product. A "Nest Audio Mini," if you will, would perfectly fill a gap in Google's current hardware lineup. It would offer a high-quality audio experience for those who want something smaller than the Nest Audio and better sounding than the Nest Mini. We have no official confirmation, and this is most definitely a guess, but it might look like Google is getting ready to answer Apple's challenge in the small speaker space, and that's a very exciting prospect.
