Dozens of California cities cancel Fourth of July fireworks after deadly warehouse blast

A deadly explosion at a fireworks storage facility in Yolo County has forced cities across Northern California to cancel or scale back their Fourth of July celebrations, leaving many communities scrambling ahead of the holiday.
The blast occurred Tuesday evening at a warehouse operated by Devastating Pyrotechnics near Esparto. The explosion ignited a wildfire that burned nearly 80 acres and left seven people unaccounted for, according to state and local fire officials.
The facility supplied fireworks to numerous municipalities throughout the region.
As a result, at least a dozen scheduled fireworks shows have been canceled or postponed.
In San Jose, the city called off its Lake Cunningham Park fireworks display but will move forward with the rest of the festivities, including a parade and live music.
'Our fireworks vendor was directly impacted by the warehouse explosion,' said Daniel Candelas, a city spokesperson. 'However, we are working to pivot to a drone show.'
Cloverdale's annual Chuck Sibert Pyro Spectacular, long a mainstay of the town's holiday celebration, was canceled by the Lions Club. The group cited the destruction of their fireworks inventory in the Yolo County blast.
Other affected events include the Lodi Lake Fireworks Show, the St. Helena Fourth of July display, and the show at Chico's Silver Dollar Speedway.
The New Stockton 99 Speedway canceled its July 3 fireworks, though its racing program will continue. In Marysville, the Yuba-Sutter fireworks event was postponed to July 5 and will use a different vendor.
The Esparto Volunteer Firefighters Association also canceled its own July 5 show 'out of respect for the families and community affected by the recent tragic events.'
In St. Helena and other parts of wine country, officials pointed not only to the warehouse explosion but also to extreme heat and heightened fire danger in their decisions to cancel fireworks.
San Francisco's waterfront fireworks display remains on schedule, and some inland cities unaffected by the warehouse blast are moving ahead with their plans.
Still, the ripple effect from the Yolo County explosion has cast a shadow over what is typically one of the busiest nights of the year for public celebrations across the state.
State and federal investigators, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, are working to determine the cause of the explosion. Evacuation orders remain in place around the site.

Maine man killed by ‘mini cannon' projectile during fireworks display

A Maine man was killed when a 'mini cannon' projectile from a fireworks display struck him during a gathering among neighbors last weekend, according to authorities. Joseph Hennessey, 41, crumpled to the ground and succumbed to his injuries after he was rushed to a local hospital in Oxford County Saturday night, the county sheriff's office said, according to reports. Joseph Hennessey Joseph Hennessey/Facebook The fireworks show was taking place at a town of Oxford home when tragedy struck. 'I heard a pretty big bang, which I thought was probably a cannon because I've heard them and I've seen them at different places that I've been at,' neighbor Kevin Boutin told WMTW. 'Then the fireworks stopped and then all of a sudden, the ambulance was here and the fire trucks.' The incident happened at a town of Oxford home. KOAT The medical examiner's office ruled that Hennessey, a South Paris resident, was killed by a projectile that came from a mini cannon during the fireworks, the station reported. The death is still under investigation by the Maine State Police. The incident is one of numerous fatalities involving fireworks during the summer months, including an 8-year-old girl who was struck during a Fourth of July celebration this year and South Carolina father who was killed when he put a lit fireworks on his head last year.

I led the NYPD task force Zohran Mamdani hates — here's what he gets so wrong

A decade ago, in 2015, then-Police Commissioner William Bratton entrusted me to develop the New York City Police Department's Strategic Response Group. The commissioner was deeply concerned about the department's ability to respond to a mass-casualty terror attack like the ones that had recently devastated Mumbai and Paris. In both cities, coordinated teams of terrorists targeted multiple high-profile locations using explosives and AR-style rifles, resulting in significant loss of life. Advertisement We created the SRG as a specialized unit of 700 uniformed officers, operating 24/7 across all five boroughs. The unit was built around three core missions, which remain its purpose today. Advertisement First of all, SRG provides counterterrorism support, backing up our elite Emergency Service Unit during terrorist incidents. We implemented a key innovation: a specially trained and equipped Rescue Task Force that operates in partnership with FDNY/EMS. This joint unit — the first of its kind in the nation — establishes secure corridors to evacuate and treat injured civilians during active threats. Notably, this group leaped into action during Monday's fatal attack on a Midtown office building, safely escorting rescuers caring for victims and securing the lobby, rooftop and perimeter. Advertisement SRG also responds to major incidents and emergencies citywide, augmenting precinct resources. The unit is deployed to active major crimes on a daily basis, including robberies, burglaries, assaults and shootings. Its officers conduct searches for missing children and elderly individuals, and are equipped to manage civil-disorder incidents with the tools and training to conduct orderly mass arrests. Finally, SRG officers are strategically assigned to areas experiencing spikes in street crime, and play a vital role in securing major city events — including New Year's Eve in Times Square, the Fourth of July fireworks and the Thanksgiving Day Parade — by providing essential crowd-control and public-safety functions. Check out more newsletters To form SRG, we consolidated nine existing units into a single, unified command capable of responding within minutes to any precinct in the city. This reorganization both streamlined our emergency response and significantly reduced administrative costs. Importantly, SRG has adopted clear policies to safeguard First Amendment rights whenever its officers are deployed at demonstrations — and its tactics have led to a significant reduction in lawsuits, saving the city millions of dollars. The unit is committed to protecting free speech and the right to peaceful assembly, and has been since its inception. Monday's attack at 345 Park Avenue in Manhattan demonstrated SRG's readiness and effectiveness. The first SRG units arrived on scene at 6:34 pm — just six minutes after the initial 911 call. Officers entered the building properly armed, equipped and trained to confront the threat and provide aid as needed. Advertisement The NYPD's Strategic Response Group remains a cornerstone of our city's safety and resilience — which is why it's so disheartening to hear Zohran Mamdani, a leading candidate for mayor, pledge to eliminate the unit altogether. If that should come to pass, the question is — who? Who will render lifesaving aid and evacuate students at a Columbine-, Ulvade- or Parkland-type school shooting? Advertisement Who will search for an elderly Alzheimer's patient who walks out of his Brooklyn home on a freezing winter night, or a 5-year-old child missing from Central Park on a sunny weekend afternoon? Who will respond to flooding in the Rockaways and evacuate stranded residents? Who will conduct grid searches for wanted perpetrators after robberies and shootings? Who will bring calm when civil unrest leads to mass looting of businesses and threats of assault against residents? Advertisement To lead this city forward and ensure public safety, these are the questions we need to ask ourselves — as well as those who wish to become our mayor. Chief Stephen J. Hughes (Ret.) was the founder and first commanding officer of the NYPD's Strategic Response Group.

'We Don't Have Contracts With DHS or ICE': Home Depot Stock (NYSE:HD) Slips as it Fights Rumors

The role that home improvement giant Home Depot (HD) plays in the ongoing war against illegal immigration could perhaps be best described as 'amorphous.' It is not exactly clear, but it is present nonetheless. When a new rumor emerged that Home Depot's role might have been more deliberate than some expected, Home Depot moved to take the rumor on directly. This did not help it much with shareholders, however, and shares slipped fractionally in Wednesday afternoon's trading. Elevate Your Investing Strategy: Take advantage of TipRanks Premium at 50% off! Just days ago, mostly through social media, a rumor emerged that said Home Depot was receiving a $250 million payday from the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arm. That payment gave ICE the ability to stake out Home Depot parking lots looking for illegal immigrants. While Home Depot has certainly expressed support for the Trump administration in the past, the rumor was quickly quashed and declared just what it was: a rumor. Home Depot representative Beth Marlowe offered up a statement from the company, saying 'This story is false. We don't have contracts with DHS or ICE. We aren't notified that ICE activities are going to happen, and we aren't involved in them. In many cases, we don't know that arrests have taken place until after they're over.' To underscore the point, Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security, offered a statement as well, calling the claim 'ridiculous' and '…just another attempt to smear our brave ICE law enforcement.' The Skelly Effect Meanwhile, yesterday, we revealed that Home Depot was rolling out the Halloween decorations perhaps a little early. But a lot of that new line is focused on Skelly, a giant skeleton model, as well as some new additions like Skelly's cat and dog. As it turns out, Skelly is giving Home Depot a surprising advantage over its competitors in the field, as it serves as a kind of status symbol. Back in 2020, through 2023, Skelly units would routinely sell out, sometimes in as little as a few hours. And homes would even keep them up year-round, decorating them for the season with leprechaun garb on St. Patrick's Day or Uncle Sam outfits for the Fourth of July. Customers call the decoration '…realistic without being too scary or graphic,' and that makes it an attractive draw that competitors are rushing to compete against. Is Home Depot a Good Long-Term Buy? Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Strong Buy consensus rating on HD stock based on 18 Buys and six Holds assigned in the past three months, as indicated by the graphic below. After a 2.49% rally in its share price over the past year, the average HD price target of $428.12 per share implies 13.77% upside potential.
