King warns Mindef against buying 'flying coffins'
MERSING (Aug 16): His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, today issued a stern reminder to the Ministry of Defence not to repeat past mistakes in the procurement of military assets, particularly used aircraft that could endanger the lives of pilots and military personnel.
His Majesty said the nation's experience in purchasing second-hand Skyhawk aircraft should serve as a lesson, as the planes could not be fully utilised.
'Do not repeat the past mistake like when we bought second-hand Skyhawks… are we going to put our pilots in 'flying coffins'? Think for yourselves.
'I believe all this happens because the Ministry of Defence is full of agents or ex-generals turned salesmen, and even textile traders trying to sell drones,' said Sultan Ibrahim at the 60th Anniversary Parade of Rejimen Gerak Khas (RGK) at Kem Iskandar, here.
Also present were the Regent of Johor Tunku Mahkota Ismail and Tunku Putera Johor Tunku Abu Bakar Sultan Ibrahim.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, Malaysian Armed Forces Chief General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar, and Army Chief General Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan were also in attendance.
The A-4 Skyhawk, developed by McDonnell-Douglas (now Boeing), was closely associated with the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF), which acquired 80 units from the United States in 1982 at US$1 million each, before retiring the fleet due to a high accident rate.
Sultan Ibrahim, who is also Colonel Commandant of Gerup Gerak Khas (GGK), further advised the Defence Minister to cancel the proposed purchase of Black Hawk helicopters that are over 30 years old, out of concern that the same mistake would be repeated.
The monarch emphasised that all parties involved in military procurement must ensure evaluations are conducted transparently, based on market prices and the actual needs of the armed forces, and not merely on the recommendations of agents or vested interests.
'Do not waste time buying nonsense that does not fit the needs of the military. If you don't know the price, ask me first.
'Five years ago, I pointed out the purchase of rigid raiding craft for the commandos at RM5 million, when I could have sourced a better boat for under RM2 million.
'Recently, I heard there was a proposal to buy a similar boat but in a larger size, at nearly RM10 million. This makes no sense and must be carefully reviewed,' Sultan Ibrahim said.
His Majesty stressed that if all asset purchases are made at inflated 'middleman' prices, then government allocations will never be sufficient.
'Therefore, do not try to fool me. If you do not want to heed my advice, I will not speak up again,' His Majesty said.
In addition to highlighting the need for price transparency, Sultan Ibrahim also criticised the delay in the combat diving pool project at RGK Camp, which was supposed to be completed in 2022 but is still not operational.
At the same time, His Majesty urged the government to prioritise the acquisition of new equipment to ensure RGK's readiness remains at the highest level, enabling swift response to any threat.

Jalur Gemilang: Don't take the law into your own hands
KUALA LUMPUR: The public has been urged not to take the law into their own hands or engage in unlawful acts against anyone committing offences related to the Jalur Gemilang flag, says Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He said that all matters involving investigations, prosecutions, and court decisions must be left entirely to the authorities, following a reminder issued by the Attorney-General's Chambers (A-GC) yesterday. "Do not act as the police, lawyers, or judge. It is wrong. Leave it to the police to investigate, the A-GC to prosecute, and the courts to decide," he said after launching the Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya-level National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang Flag 2025 campaign at Institut Pendidikan Guru (IPG) Kampus Bahasa Melayu today. The launch was also attended by Communications Ministry deputy secretary-general (strategic communications and creative industry) Nik Kamaruzaman Nik Husin; Information Department director-general Julina Johan; and IPG Kampus Bahasa Melayu director Dr Masitah Mohammad Yusof. Fahmi said that some people had been called in by the police following a rally held to "teach" certain parties a lesson, but further action would be handled solely by the authorities. He said Malaysians should address issues related to the Jalur Gemilang respectfully and constructively. "As Malaysians, we can also play our part. If we see a Jalur Gemilang that has fallen, we should raise it. If it is faded, replace it with a new one. If it is improperly flown, correct it ourselves. Let us not sneer, curse, or act uncivilly. We must demonstrate our patriotic spirit during the national month while reminding one another of proper conduct," he added. Fahmi said that the programme included the Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya-level Merdeka Jalur Gemilang Convoy, comprising 73 vehicles from the Communications Ministry's departments and agencies, the police, Fire and Rescue Department, Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN), National Security Council (MKN), Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), Suzuki V-Strom Malaysia motorsports club, Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), and the Lembah Pantai Madani Community. Additional side events included the Safe Internet campaign, aimed at raising awareness of ethical online practices among teacher training institute students. Thai lawmakers pass massive US$117bil budget to revive economy

The budget bill for the year starting Oct 1 was backed by 257 lawmakers in the 500-member House of Representatives late Friday, following a three-day debate. A total of 229 members opposed the spending plan. The vote will be a relief to investors in the Southeast Asian nation, by avoiding a repeat of the months-long deadlock over spending plans seen in 2019. The country faces a litany of problems, including political instability linked to the suspension of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra; continued tensions with Cambodia which recently erupted into violent clashes; and a stiff 19% tariff on shipments to the US, Thailand's biggest export destination. Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira thanked the house for approving the budget and said the government will ensure the spending is efficient, transparent and delivers maximum benefit to the people. "I would like to assure that the policies, measures, and budget approved will be implemented in accordance with the designated objectives and plans,' Pichai said in a post on X. The government has defended a marginal increase in spending for the year starting October, and a projected budget deficit of 860 billion baht ($27 billion), or 4.3% of gross domestic product. Officials say the outlays are necessary given the increased risks to the economy from global trade uncertainties. The Senate will review the budget on Aug. 25-26, but analysts expect the spending plan to take effect on Oct. 1 as planned. Defence ministry expands G2G MoUs to curb middlemen in asset procurement
KUALA LUMPUR: The Defence Ministry is enhancing international cooperation through Government-to-Government (G2G) Memorandums of Understanding for defence procurement. Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin stated this approach eliminates intermediaries in acquiring national defence assets. 'The MADANI government remains consistent in its efforts to improve governance and ensure transparency, including in purchases of national defence assets,' he said. His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, earlier warned against repeating past procurement errors during Rejimen Gerak Khas' 60th anniversary parade in Mersing. The monarch stressed evaluations must prioritise market prices and armed forces' needs over third-party recommendations. Mohamed Khaled affirmed the ministry's commitment to accountability and integrity in defence acquisitions. Internal policies are being tightened to enforce transparency and ethical compliance in procurement processes. New proposals will involve the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) to assess suitability, safety, and technological relevance. 'Any procurement of defence assets is also made based on MAF requirements or user-driven,' he clarified.
