LABUAN: Labuan Chinese Chamber of Commerce Chairman Datuk Wong expressed disappointment over the frequent cancellation of MASwings' last flight to Kota Kinabalu. He said the evening flight was important for the business community and its uncertainty deterred many from coming. 'Labuan is a close neighbour of Sabah and there is a strong commercial relationship between the two points. The evening flight out of Labuan for traders on business deals here enables them to come to Labuan in the morning and return before dark. 'When the flight is cancelled it mean staying an extra night and paying for hotel and other expenses. This is a financial burden because the airfare for one-way to KK was already high at RM198'. Wong said he was unaware of the reason why the business community's popular flight was often cancelled. 'If the reason was insufficient capacity, it is unacceptable. An airline should not expect to make profits from all its flights. 'As far as I know flights on domestic routes are subsidised. If the subsidy is not enough, ask for more but don't keep cancelling flights as regular cancellations not only frustrate passengers but is also not good for the airline's image,' said Wong. Revised Sales Tax won't affect essentials, aims to shield rakyat from inflation, says Mat Sabu
Mohamad Sabu says the implementation of revised ST, effective July 1, only involves selected and premium goods, at a rate of 5 per cent or 10 per cent. – Bernama photo KUALA LUMPUR (June 11): The government will continue to ensure essential goods like rice, cooking oil, vegetables, chicken and fish remain tax-free to safeguard the people's food security. Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the implementation of revised Sales Tax (ST), effective July 1, only involves selected and premium goods, at a rate of 5 per cent or 10 per cent. According to him, the items in this category include truffle mushrooms, racing bicycles and king crab. 'This is a balanced approach where most people won't be affected, while those who are better off can contribute fairly to the country's development. 'Insya-Allah, the MADANI Government will continue to ensure policies that are formulated are centred on the principles of social justice and well-being of the people,' he posted on Facebook. Based on the Ministry of Finance's explanation, the zero per cent sales tax is maintained for daily essential goods, like chicken, beef, lamb, fish, shrimp, squid, vegetables, local fruits, rice, barley, oats, wheat, flour, canned sardines, sugar and salt. Also included are white bread, pasta, vermicelli, noodles, instant noodles, milk, cooking oil, medicine, medical devices, books, journals, newspapers and pet food. Zero per cent sales tax is also retained for basic construction materials like cement, bricks and sand as well as agricultural sector inputs such as fertilisers, pesticides, and agricultural and livestock machinery. Indonesia nears trade deals with EU, Eurasian bloc
JAKARTA: (Bernama) Indonesia is close to finalising trade deals with the European Union (EU) and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) by year-end to expand market access and attract foreign investment, officials said. The two agreements are the Indonesia-EU Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and the Indonesia-EAEU Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Trade Minister Budi Santoso said the agreements are crucial amid global trade uncertainty, with the potential to diversify Indonesia's export markets and provide alternatives for products impacted by the United States tariff policies. "Negotiations are progressing rapidly, and we are targeting completion this year. We will ensure the benefits can be felt by businesses and the public at large,' he said in a statement. The deals aim to lower tariff and non-tariff barriers on key Indonesian exports such as palm oil, agricultural products, textiles, and electronics, while also covering investment, sustainability, and support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Talks with the EU began in 2016, while negotiations with the EAEU, comprising Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan, were launched in 2022. According to the Ministry of Trade, Indonesia's total trade with the EU reached US$30.1 billion in 2024, with a US$4.5 billion surplus, and trade with the EAEU stood at US$4.1 billion, with a US$1.1 billion deficit. The ministry said the agreements are expected to diversify export markets and reinforce Indonesia's position as a key economic player in Southeast Asia. "These deals are not only about increasing trade, but also about boosting competitiveness, creating jobs, and supporting industrial growth,' said International Trade Negotiations director-general Djatmiko Bris Witjaksono.
