Growing up near the Boston Post Road, I never appreciated that I had the early postal system to thank for this old thoroughfare between New York and Boston. Nor did I know that I would one day proudly earn a living as a postal worker and spend 12 years as the elected leader of my union of postal workers. As the U.S. Postal Service celebrates its 250th anniversary, my experience lends a unique perspective on its past, present, and future.
Older than the country itself and enshrined in the Constitution, the Postal Service reflected a then-radical commitment to the free exchange of ideas and information. The Founding Fathers relied on the Postal Service to organize the Second Continental Congress and to circulate the Federalist Papers. Later, the abolitionist movement agitated and organized against the evils of slavery largely through mailed newspapers and correspondence.
The Postal Service has driven the nation's development, from roads, railroads, and civil aviation to the Sears mail-order catalog to Amazon's e-commerce.
What is today referred to as the USPS has always changed and adapted to the times. Vote-by-mail first gave Union troops access to the ballot box during the Civil War and today it is the preferred method of voting for tens of millions of people. Rural Free Delivery, permanently implemented in 1902, linked isolated rural communities with the rest of the country. The Postal Savings Bank, established in 1911, softened the blow of the Great Depression for millions, before being killed by the big banks in 1967.

The e-commerce revolution would be unimaginable without the USPS' unrivaled network. For generations, the law has required universal and affordable postal service to every community. While private shippers maximize profit, the public USPS remains the low-cost anchor of a $1.3 trillion mailing industry, to the benefit of 169 million households and businesses that receive their mail six, and sometimes seven, days a week.
The USPS has led the way with its fair hiring practices, good living-wage union jobs, and as the largest civilian employer of veterans. Workers from all walks of life earn equal pay for equal work.
The USPS remains a true symbol of the strength of the public good and is prized by the vast majority of Americans, with dedicated postal workers among the most trusted public servants in the country.
Yet, as we celebrate this historic milestone, this national treasure is facing threats to its very existence.
The White House is openly advocating for postal privatization, an idea promoted for decades by the Heritage Foundation. As Elon Musk rampaged through government, he declared that selling off the USPS was a priority. And now the Postal Board of Governors has shamefully selected a new postmaster general—David Steiner—straight from competitor FedEx, an obvious and glaring conflict of interest.
If the privatizers succeed at selling off this public institution, in whole or in part, Wall Street investors and postal competitors may celebrate, but postal customers—businesses large and small, households urban and rural—will suffer. In February, Wells Fargo Advisors put in writing what is usually whispered by the private shippers and their allies in Washington: privatization of the USPS would be a boon to UPS and FedEx, and increase parcel prices by up to 140 percent. The Wells Fargo memo also said that many local post offices would be sold off and closed or, as the big bank terms it, "harvested for value."
Want to know what a privatized mail service looks like? Look no further than the Royal Mail, the United Kingdom's historic postal service, now owned by a Czech billionaire, where a first-class letter costs two dollars. In Portugal, privatization has resulted in three days a week delivery.
The USPS is a successful example of government "of, by, and for the people." It belongs to us, the people, and not to Wall Street. Through new and expanded products, e-commerce package growth, and better staffing, the USPS can remain a vital public service for generations—if it can survive the vultures who wish to privatize.
The following inscription, carved into white granite on the Smithsonian Postal Museum, is a powerful reminder of why it's so important to maintain the USPS as a public service, especially as Americans commemorate this important anniversary:

Kennedy Jr., who has spearheaded the MAHA movement, at the National Governors Association summer meeting. "I spent some time with my fellow governors a week or two ago," Reeves said. "We also had meetings with Secretary Kennedy while we were at the conference, very productive meetings, and that is something we are looking into." Brandon Bell/GETTY SNAP Changes Across the U.S. So far this year, 12 states have approved plans to restrict SNAP benefits. While the program is administered by states, it is overseen and largely paid for by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). To make amendments to SNAP, states are required to send waiver requests to the federal agency for approval. Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah and West Virginia have all had their waiver requests approved. Tennessee and South Carolina have indicated that they are in the process of making similar requests to the USDA. Beginning in 2026, the approved waivers are set to prohibit certain foods from being purchased with electronic benefit transfer cards, which are reloaded monthly for use at participating grocery stores nationwide. Not all the new restrictions are the same. For example, in Colorado, Utah and West Virginia, only soft drinks and/or soda would no longer be purchasable with SNAP. In numerous other states, the restriction also extends to candy. What People Are Saying USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins said in an August 4 news release regarding states with approved waivers: "It is incredible to see so many states take action at this critical moment in our nation's history and do something to begin to address chronic health problems. President Trump has changed the status quo, and the entire cabinet is taking action to Make America Healthy Again. At USDA, we play a key role in supporting Americans who fall on hard times, and that commitment does not change. Rather, these state waivers promote healthier options for families in need." Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said in the news release: "For years, SNAP has used taxpayer dollars to fund soda and candy—products that fuel America's diabetes and chronic disease epidemics. These waivers help put real food back at the center of the program and empower states to lead the charge in protecting public health. I thank these governors who have stepped up to request waivers, and I encourage others to follow their lead. This is how we Make America Healthy Again." Valerie Imbruce, the director of the Center for Environment and Society at Washington College, previously told Newsweek: "Controlling how the poor eat is a paternalistic response to a problem that is not based in SNAP recipients' inability to make good decisions about healthy foods, it is a problem of the price differential in choosing healthy or junk foods. Soda and candy are much cheaper and more calorie dense than 100 percent fruit juices or prebiotic non-artificially sweetened carbonated beverages, thanks to price supports and subsidies by the federal government to support a U.S. sugar industry." What Happens Next Reeves' comments suggest that Mississippi has not formally requested a waiver from the USDA. It remains to be seen whether the state will do so.

As well as the war in Ukraine, Østhagen said that Russia could discuss developing the Northern Sea route (NSR) into a commercial traffic lane, which is a Russian project that the U.S. plays a part in but is not the primary driver of. The NSR, which goes along the Arctic coastline, is the shortest shipping route between the western part of Eurasia and the Asia-Pacific region, and its strategic value chimes with Trump's statements about Greenland, which he wants to acquire. Through it sail container ships, oil tankers, bulk carriers transporting minerals and ores, and vessels servicing oil, gas and mining operations in Alaska and Siberia. It is becoming more navigable due to global warming. Under the Biden administration and Trump's first administration, efforts were made to expand collaboration between Russia and the U.S., focusing on enabling safer traffic through the Bering Strait, which divides Alaska from Russia, said Østhagen, who is also a senior fellow at the Arctic Institute. "If any shipping traffic takes that shortcut between Europe and Asia, it has to go via the Russian Arctic and via the Bering Strait," Østhagen said. The Bering Sea is also home to some of the most profitable fish stocks in the world, where not only Russia and the U.S. are actively fishing, but also other countries like China. There are potential plans for oil and gas development in the Arctic, and joint exploration in shared areas like the Chukchi Sea, north of the Bering Strait, could be considered, though profitability and political factors will influence such projects. "There's a lot to talk about in terms of practical functional cooperation, first and foremost to try to set up shipping or more oil and gas exploration in the Arctic," said Østhagen.
