Dear Miss Manners: I am trying to drink more water, so I set an alarm on my phone to remind me hourly. Sometimes I am in public when the alarm (birds or crickets chirping) goes off.
I turn it off immediately, but my husband says the noise is rude. But if I could remember to shut off the alarm when leaving the house, I wouldn't need an alarm to drink water in the first place. Am I being impolite?

Romanian man pleads guilty to 'swatting' plot that targeted an ex-US president and lawmakers
WASHINGTON (AP) — A Romanian citizen pleaded guilty on Monday to engaging in a plot to use 'swatting' calls and bomb threats to intimidate and threaten dozens of people with bogus police emergencies, including a former U.S. president and several members of Congress. Thomasz Szabo, 26, is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 23 by U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson in Washington, D.C. Szabo was extradited from Romania in November 2024. He was charged with Nemanja Radovanovic , 21, of Serbia. Szabo pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy and one count of making bomb threats. The two men targeted roughly 100 people with 'swatting' calls to instigate an aggressive response by police officers at the victims' homes, a federal indictment alleges. A U.S. Secret Service agent's affidavit doesn't name the former U.S. president or any other officials identified as victims of the hoax calls. The two defendants are not explicitly charged in the indictment with threatening a former president, but one of the alleged victims is identified as a 'former elected official from the executive branch' who was swatted on Jan. 9. 2024. Radovanovic falsely reported a killing and threatened to set off an explosion at that person's home, the indictment says. Szabo told Radovanovic that they should pick targets from both the Republican and Democratic parties because 'we are not on any side,' the indictment says. 'This defendant led a dangerous swatting criminal conspiracy, deliberately threatening dozens of government officials with violent hoaxes and targeting our nation's security infrastructure from behind a screen overseas,' Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement. Charges against Radovanovic are still pending. Online court records indicate that he hasn't made any court appearances in Washington yet.

Teen arrested in fatal shooting of two brothers in Arlington, police say
A teenager has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of two brothers during what Arlington police described as a high-risk transaction that went wrong. Xavier Weddington, 19, is facing a capital murder charge in the deaths of 17-year-old Jason Cuevas and 21-year-old Bryan Cuevas. The shooting occurred on Thursday at the Paddock on Park Row Apartments in the 400 block of West Park Row Drive, according to the Arlington Police Department. They were transported to a nearby hospital, where they were later pronounced dead. Officers found him in the 2500 block of Sherry Street, roughly 3.7 miles from the original crime scene. Weddington told police he had been shot by an unknown suspect while walking to a relative's home. However, investigators said his story was inconsistent and raised suspicions. Witness identifies the shooter A witness from the apartment complex later identified Weddington as the shooter in a photo lineup, police said. Detectives learned that Weddington regularly stayed at a nearby apartment and confirmed that a friend had picked him up from the crime scene and driven him to the Sherry Street location — a timeline consistent with the witness account. Police suspect a "high-risk transaction" "Investigators believe the Cuevas brothers arranged to meet with Mr. Weddington at the apartment complex to complete a high-risk transaction that ultimately went south," Arlington police said in a news release. "Multiple firearms were recovered at the crime scene." Weddington was arrested Friday by the U.S. Marshals North Texas Fugitive Task Force. He was booked into the Arlington City Jail and later transferred to the Tarrant County Jail. Investigation still in progress The investigation remains ongoing.
