
Introducing the New New Celine
Michael Rider was making his designer debut, and he presumably wanted to invite everyone into the brand's home, both as a welcome and a reset. It had been eight months since the previous creative director, Hedi Slimane, departed the job, and five years since Celine was part of any official fashion week at all.
What emerged, however, was more like a synthesis: a dialectic in wardrobe form between the subversive, female-centric luxury of Old Celine made famous by Phoebe Philo and the didactic desiccation-meets-the-bourgeoisie of New Celine as defined by Mr. Slimane; between the lunching chic of Original Celine established in 1945 by its founder, Céline Vipiana, and the preppiness of Mr. Rider's recent stint as women's design director of Ralph Lauren. All of it sent through the looking glass only to re-emerge in twisted form on the other side.
It was familiar, but in a messed up way. At least in Mr. Rider's hands, the effect was compellingly (rather than alarmingly) unsettling.
Blazers were oversize, with the waist pulled slightly off its axis, shoulders sloping out — not to push through a glass ceiling, but to poke it, and maybe add a tickle or two. Pants were legging or long john tight (Mr. Rider is one of those designers seemingly committed to the concept of men in leggings, which may be a sly commentary on Mr. Slimane's famously skinny silhouette, but is never really a good idea) but also pleated at the waist and curvy at the thigh, paired with equally curvy cropped leather jackets and tucked into supple leather boxing boots.

French gameshow contestant's epic 21-month winning streak finally ends
A French gameshow contestant has been dethroned after a record-breaking run of 646 wins that lasted 21 months. Émilien, 22, made his first appearance on the '12 Coups de midi' daily game show on September 25, 2023, according to a statement from French TV network TF1, which announced the end of his run on Sunday. The network has not revealed his surname. In the show, four contestants compete in a general knowledge quiz. The winner then answers a series of questions to determine their prize pot for that day, before returning to take on a new slate of opponents the day after. Émilien won more than 2.5 million euros ($2.93 million) in cash and other prizes, as well as 23 cars, making him the biggest winner in French game show history, said TF1. His haul more than doubled the previous record of one million euros ($1.17 million), held by Bruno Lafourcade. 'I never expected to have the chance to stay for such a long time,' said Émilien, who comes from southwest France. 'It's amazing everything that has happened. It's hard to understand.' Prior to appearing on the show, Émilien studied history at university and was aiming to become a teacher. He then paused his studies to concentrate on his record-breaking run, which came to an end when he ran out of time to answer a question during Sunday's show. Despite his loss to Romain, an architect, Émilien has become the world record holder for the most solo game show appearances, and the European record holder for prizes won, according to TF1. His run became something of a sensation in France, with his defeat drawing an average of 5 million spectators on Sunday. TF1's '12 Coups de midi' has some similarities with popular US quiz show 'Jeopardy,' which airs every weekday for 30 minutes. The record for the highest number of consecutive wins on 'Jeopardy' is held by Ken Jennings, who won 74 games in a row in 2004, followed by Amy Schneider, who won 40 consecutive games in 2022. Jennings also holds the record for the highest amount of prize money won on 'Jeopardy,' at $2,520,700, followed by James Holzhauer on $2,462,216.

Croatian right-wing singer Marko Perkovic and fans perform pro-Nazi salute at massive concert
ZAGREB, Croatia (AP) — A hugely popular right-wing Croatian singer and hundreds of thousands of his fans performed a pro-Nazi World War II salute at a massive concert in Zagreb, drawing criticism. One of Marko Perkovic's most popular songs, played in the late Saturday concert, starts with the dreaded 'For the homeland — Ready!' salute, used by Croatia's Nazi-era puppet Ustasha regime that ran concentration camps at the time. Perkovic, whose stage name is Thompson after a U.S.-made machine gun, had previously said both the song and the salute focus on the 1991-95 ethnic war in Croatia, in which he fought using the American firearm, after the country declared independence from the former Yugoslavia. He says his controversial song is 'a witness of an era.' The 1990s conflict erupted when rebel minority Serbs, backed by neighboring Serbia, took up guns, intending to split from Croatia and unite with Serbia. Perkovic's immense popularity in Croatia reflects prevailing nationalist sentiments in the country 30 years after the war ended. The WWII Ustasha troops in Croatia brutally killed tens of thousands of Serbs, Jews, Roma and antifascist Croats in a string of concentration camps in the country. Despite documented atrocities, some nationalists still view the Ustasha regime leaders as founders of the independent Croatian state. Organizers said that half a million people attended Perkovic's concert in the Croatian capital. Video footage aired by Croatian media showed many fans displaying pro-Nazi salutes earlier in the day. The salute is punishable by law in Croatia, but courts have ruled Perkovic can use it as part of his song, the Croatian state television HRT said. Perkovic has been banned from performing in some European cities over frequent pro-Nazi references and displays at his gigs. Croatia's Vecernji List daily wrote that the concert's 'supreme organization' has been overshadowed by the use of the salute of a regime that signed off on 'mass executions of people.' Regional N1 television noted that whatever the modern interpretations of the salute may be its roots are 'undoubtedly' in the Ustasha regime era. N1 said that while 'Germans have made a clear cut" from anything Nazi-related 'to prevent crooked interpretations and the return to a dark past ... Croatia is nowhere near that in 2025.' In neighboring Serbia, populist President Aleksandar Vucic criticized Perkovic's concerts as a display 'of support for pro-Nazi values.' Former Serbian liberal leader Boris Tadic said it was a 'great shame for Croatia" and "the European Union' because the concert 'glorifies the killing of members of one nation, in this case Serbian.' Croatia joined the EU in 2013. Croatian police said Perkovic's concert was the biggest ever in the country and an unseen security challenge, deploying thousands of officers. No major incidents were reported.
