Grand National results LIVE: Winners, odds and latest updates on huge day of Aintree racing

Independent05-04-2025

The Grand National Festival concludes today with blockbuster showdown at Aintree Racecourse that the last couple of days have been building to.
2024 Grand National champion I Am Maximus is the pre-race favourite with the bookmakers and at the top weight of 11st 12lbs he'll have a tough job on his hands to emulate Grand National legends Red Rum and Tiger Roll by winning the race two years in a row.
Competitors include the blazingly good Stumptown and Intense Raffles as well as an Irish chaser Perceval Legallois who is being tipped for a surprising victory in front of the thousands of fans gathered to watch.
Aintree day three tips
Just under 10 minutes to go until the next day, with a quick turnaround here. Here's Sam Turner's tip for the race...
2.30pm - William Hill Handicap Chase
Imperial Saint – 1/2pt ew
This trip represents a step into the unknown for Imperial Saint, but his racing style suggests the step up is within his compass and he should appreciate the return to his favoured venue. The selection is 3-3 at Aintree and was an impressive winner when scoring here on Boxing Day by six lengths.
He also boasts good ground form on his CV, courtesy of a brace of victories on Merseyside before Christmas.

'Looking forward to it now, I'm here and ready to go,' he says of the National.

Aintree day three tips
10 minutes until the second race of the day, so here's the next tip...
1.55pm - Turners Mersey Novices' Hurdle
Lulamba – 2pt win
Fingle Bridge – 1/2pt ew
Lulamba has looked a talented horse in his two UK hurdle events to date and was perhaps a little unlucky to be picked off late on by an unconsidered hurdling debutant in the Triumph Hurdle. The step up to two-and-a-half miles should be ideal and he can stamp his class on this race.
There is a chance the betting markets may underestimate the ability of Fingle Bridge who has been plying his trade in minor races to date. He copes well with spring ground and could outrun his odds.

ITV Deal or No Deal star dealt huge blow minutes into charity special

Alex Brooker is facing off the Banker in tonight's Soccer Aid special A Deal or No Deal contestant has been dealt a huge blow, losing the £100K jackpot just minutes into the ITV show. Saturday Night's (7th June) Soccer Aid episode saw The Last Leg co-host Alex Brooker facing off the Banker, supported by a star-studded panel. ‌ In a bid to win up to £100,000 for UNICEF, Alex gunned for the cash prize assisted by celebrities, including former England player Jill Scott and Irish actor Emmett J. Scanlan. ‌ However, Alex was left devastated when he selected his brother Tom's box, hoping to strike blue. Initially optimistic about his choice, Alex told host Stephen Mulhern "I think my brother Tom, number eight, has got 50p in there [the box.]" Tom was equally confident, agreeing with his sibling that the box likely contained 50p. But the duo were dealt a huge blow as Tom opened his box to find £100,000 inside. The Soccer Aid team was visibly upset, and they were not alone. Viewers have taken to X, formerly Twitter, to echo their frustration at the huge loss. One penned: "Oh no! The £100K is gone," while a second voiced out: "£100K gone. I'm furious and raging." Other ITV fans were quick to question the star's process. "Why hasn't he got a system? Lucky numbers & bad numbers. Looks like he's just choosing randomly with no strategy," quipped one. Glasgow Warriors miss out on URC final after loss against Leinster

Leinster will host next week's United Rugby Championship final at Croke Park after dishing out a 37-19 beating to last year's winners Glasgow Warriors. The Irish province, which had endured three straight URC semi-final defeats, regained their mojo to set up a Dublin decider against the Bulls or Sharks. Dan Sheehan started and finished the first half's try-scoring to give Leinster a 25-5 lead as Jamie Osborne and Tom Clarkson crossed at a rain-hit Aviva Stadium. Osborne and Ciaran Frawley made it six tries to one before closing scores from Jamie Dobie and Sione Tuipulotu added to George Horne's fourth-minute effort. The hosts hit the ground running with Jamison Gibson-Park pulling the trigger for Sheehan to raid over in the second minute. Glasgow swiftly cut the gap to 7-5 when Kyle Rowe's inviting kick infield was dotted down by Horne. Crossing from James Lowe denied Leinster a second try before Sam Prendergast slotted over a 21st-minute penalty. A Gibson-Park forward pass ruled out an Osborne score, but the young centre duly scored out wide from a slick Lowe offload. Leinster turned a scrum penalty into five more points when Clarkson rumbled over, and Sheehan's maul try came on the stroke of half-time. Despite Tom Jordan switching to fly-half for the Warriors, Leinster, aided by Ryan Baird's player-of-the-match performance, remained in full control. Following a penalty miss from Prendergast, who had a disappointing day with the boot, Gibson-Park clinically played in Osborne in the 53rd minute to make it 32-5. Replacement Frawley followed him over the line just four minutes later, with Lowe's initial aerial take igniting a sweeping move. Sprung from the Scots' bench, Dobie raced over in the 71st minute and Tuipulotu displayed his dancing feet with a superb solo try from the edge of Leinster's 22. Franco Smith admitted that Leinster are way out in front in the United Rugby Championship after the Irish side ended Glasgow Warriors' tenure as champions with a comprehensive victory in Dublin. Smith expressed pride in his side's reign but they were ultimately outplayed by the hosts who won the semi-final 37-19 at the Aviva Stadium. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Leinster, who also knocked Glasgow out of the Champions Cup this season, thrashing them 52-0 in the quarter-finals, will now meet the Bulls in the final at Croke Park next weekend and there will be a new name added to the URC roll of honour. Neither side has won the trophy before. Franco Smith accepted that Leinster were just too strong for his Glasgow Warriors side. (Photo by) | Getty Images Leinster, for all their brilliance, have lost in the semi-finals in each of the last three seasons but will be hot favourites to lift silverware for the first time since 2021 when they won the old Pro14 Championship. Glasgow were overwhelmed in the first half, conceding four tries through Dan Sheehan (two), Jamie Osborne and Thomas Clarkson, with George Horne replying for the visitors. Osborne and Ciaran Frawley pressed home Leinster's superiority after the break before Jamie Dobie and Sione Tuipulotu scored late consolations for the Warriors. 'Tears were shed in the changing room, to be honest,' said Smith. 'In the first 20 minutes, we just had no luck. We turned the ball over too many times and we made 70 tackles in the first quarter of the game, which is way too many and ended up going into the sheds at half-time 25-5 down. That means you're chasing against a world-class team. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'You chase the scoreline and Leinster were very good. I was never in any doubt that they would be. I know the press asked a lot of questions around their mentality but I never had doubt. There are too many class A players. I sat here a month ago talking about the [Champions Cup] quarter-final and it's still a world-class team, nothing's changed. So, if we were going to lose the URC Championship title, I'd rather it was against them than anybody else. 'That said, we're a proud team. I thought we gave it everything. I see this holistically, not just in terms of today's game. We defended our title bravely but today we fell short.' (Photo By Brendan Moran/Sportsfile via Getty Images) | Sportsfile via Getty Images Smith refused to use an extensive injury list as an excuse but there is no doubt Glasgow suffered in the absence of Zander and Matt Fagerson, Jack Dempsey, Huw Jones and Gregor Brown. 'I don't want to make excuses because I definitely felt the team that we named could have won the game,' said the Glasgow coach. 'So, yes, it would have been good to have had some of those boys back, but I backed the team that we picked. I backed the depth and the growth of the club that we've seen, with more players becoming eligible for Scotland and putting their hands up to play at this level this whole season.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'Leinster are ahead of everybody else,' he added. 'They started this process way back when. I think I was still coaching Benetton and they were already on top of their game. With Joe Schmidt bringing in certain structures and certain expectations, they've got an unbelievable feeding source here from the schools and a huge academy.
