Ireland's EuroHockey Championship Semi-Final hopes hanging by a thread after shock loss to France

Gareth Grundie's side are bidding to make the last-four of the competition for the first time, but those hopes appear in tatters following a stunning Pool A defeat.
France – the 17th-ranked nation in the Women's FIH rankings, six places below their Irish counterparts – snatched victory when Mathilde Duffrene netted the only goal of the game early in the fourth quarter.
She connected from a penalty corner and turned past Ireland goalkeeper Lizzie Murphy, with Grundie's side unable to conjure up a response as they succumbed to a second straight loss.
Ireland were beaten in their pool stage opener 2-0 by the World No.1-ranked Netherlands in their tournament opener on Saturday and produced a display that inspired confidence they could hit back against far lower-ranked opposition.
But France turned the tables and came away with the maximum spoils, with Ireland still on the hunt for their first point and goal of the competition heading into their final pool outing.
Despite those successive reverses, Ireland retain a mathematical chance of qualifying for the Semi-Finals and will be hoping the Dutch record an emphatic victory over hosts Germany – who are sixth in the world – to cut their +3 goal difference down to size in their clash on Monday evening.
However, the odds are firmly stacked against Grundie's outfit as far as their knock-out hopes are concerned ahead of their last pool game against the Germans on Wednesday.

Future is bright for Reading as young guns upset Portsmouth

Seventeen-year-old Andre Garcia and Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan, 22, gave the Royals their first win of the season after back-to-back 2-0 defeats in League One. As well as Garcia, Hunt also started academy talents Ashqar Ahmed, 17, and Shay Spencer, 19. And the Irish manager said: 'This is the future of our football club. When you see the likes of Ashqar, Shay and Andre, the future is very bright. 'I think we were really good. Our boys were fantastic and the energy was really there. 'It's not easy when you bring in a bunch of strangers and try and get them on the same path, but it is coming.' Garcia bagged his first senior goal after poking in after Ben Killip had made a sensational double save to thwart Ehibhatiomhan, who kept his cool four minutes later to make it two. Teenage debutant Tayo Singerr diverted in Adrian Segecic's pin-point cross in stoppage time after coming off the bench but it did not put a smile on John Mousinho's face. The Pompey head coach said: 'I thought it was a poor performance and a poor result. We got what we deserved. 'There wasn't enough overall and it was disappointing. We made the changes but we expect more from the XI we put out. 'I thought we went under a bit after conceding the first goal, that isn't acceptable. I think heads dropped and then we went 2-0 and gave ourselves a mountain to climb.'
