Texans HC DeMeco Ryans sees offensive line 'coming into form'
Following Saturday's practice at the Methodist Training Center, Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans said the starting line is coming into form with players separating themselves from the pack. What does this mean? In short, expect the starting five you've seen at practice over the past few days to be the starting five when Houston takes on Los Angeles at SoFi Stadium on Sept. 7.
'When we put the pads on, you see guys start to move ahead of other guys a little bit,' Ryans said. 'We'll still evaluate those guys and see how the games go, but I'm pleased with where we are now.'
Since the Texans put on the pads, the Texans have featured three of the five same offensive linemen every practice: Cam Robinson at left tackle, Tytus Howard at right guard and Aireontae Ersery at right tackle. Jake Andrews and Jarrett Patterson have been rotating at center with the first team, while Jaylon Thomas and Laken Tomlinson have been seeing a majority of reps at left guard.
Right now, Tomlinson is the favorite to start at left guard, so the only real battle seems to be at center. Andrews, who has experience working with new offensive line coach Cole Popovich in college, saw most of the first-team reps on Saturday.
'I think it helps when you have continuity and you're working besides the same guy for however many reps you're going through in practice,' Ryans said. 'It helps with communication, it helps speed up things.'
Ersery, the Texans' second-round pick out of Minnesota, might be the biggest surprise heading into the team's road trip over to The Greenbrier. It's not because Houston didn't expect him to be a focal point of the offense, but rather many figured 2024 second-round pick Blake Fisher would be a surefire to start during training camp.
Right now, the former Notre Dame product has been locked in at right tackle with the 2s most of camp.
"The thing we're working on with Blake is pad level," Ryans said earlier this offseason. "Can he work with good pad level, work with good knee bend and be in a great position to protect?"
Ersey, who spent his last three seasons with the Golden Gophers at left tackle, is learning a new position while trying to protect his quarterback against an All-Pro talent like Danielle Hunter. It's been challenging, but he feels like he's getting up to speed, moving from the left to the right.
'I am more natural on the left; I have played left for longer. But it is like riding a bike, once you get on it you just keep pedaling," Ersery said. "It is not that hard."
The Texans will face off against the Minnesota Vikings at US Bank Stadium on Saturday.

Brewers rally past Mets 7-4 for 8th straight win, spoiling Alonso's record-tying homer
MILWAUKEE (AP) — William Contreras homered to cap a four-run seventh inning and the Milwaukee Brewers rallied past the skidding New York Mets 7-4 on Saturday for their eighth consecutive victory, spoiling Pete Alonso's record-tying night. Alonso opened the second inning with his 252nd career home run, matching the franchise record held by Darryl Strawberry for 37 years. But the Mets lost their sixth straight game and 10th in the last 11 to fall 4 1/2 games behind first-place Philadelphia in the NL East. New York is only 2 1/2 games ahead of Cincinnati for the final National League playoff spot. Juan Soto went deep for the third game in a row, giving the Mets a 4-3 lead when he led off the fifth with his 28th homer of the season. Starling Marte also hit a solo shot for New York. ___ AP MLB:

CeeDee Lamb gets tackled by official during Cowboys-Rams game
Like a Lamb to the ... referee? Dallas Cowboys wideout CeeDee Lamb wasn't dressed for Saturday's preseason matchup vs. the Los Angeles Rams, but that doesn't mean he was out of the action entirely. In the second quarter, on a deep pass from Cowboys backup Joe Milton to wide receiver Jonathan Mingo, Lamb turned his back on the sideline to celebrate Mingo potentially catching a bomb from the passer. Instead of Mingo catching the ball, Lamb caught a shoulder from the referee directly to the back, wiping out both in the mashup. Lamb was flagged on the play for interfering with the referee: The thick white out-of-bounds border is strictly ref territory, so any contact with an official in that area results in a flag. While there was a foul, there was no harm, however. Lamb and the Cowboys sideline had a good laugh about the ordeal. The Cowboys would also salvage the drive, notching a field goal. It's preseason for everyone, after all. This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: CeeDee Lamb gets trucked by referee during Cowboys-Rams

Max Kepler has go-ahead hit as Phillies beat Rangers 3-2 and hand deGrom his 3rd loss in a row
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Max Kepler had a go-ahead two-run double and the NL East-leading Philadelphia Phillies beat the Texas Rangers 3-2, handing All-Star right-hander Jacob deGrom his third consecutive loss Saturday night. The Phillies went ahead 2-1 after Brandon Marsh had a one-out single in the seventh, Harrison Bader walked and both scored on Kepler's hit into the right-field corner. Bryson Stott greeted reliever Danny Coulombe with an RBI single. Philadelphia lefty Jesús Luzardo (11-5) struck out four and walked one in six innings. The only run he allowed was when Wyatt Langford had the Rangers' third consecutive single in the first. Jhoan Duran, their third reliever, worked a perfect ninth for his third save in as many chances since being acquired from Minnesota at the July 31 trade deadline. He has 19 saves overall. DeGrom (10-5) struck out eight and walked one in 6 2/3 innings. He had allowed five runs in each of his previous two starts, part of a career-worst streak when he gave up homers in six consecutive games. The last time he lost three starts in a row was early 2019 with the New York Mets, the season he won his second consecutive NL Cy Young Award. Corey Seager scored both Texas runs. He had the first hit in the first inning, and led off the eighth with his 17th homer. Key moment Rangers slugger Adolis García got thrown out trying to steal third base in the fourth inning right before Jake Burger had a single that likely would have made it 2-0. García had safely dived back into second base on a pickoff move by Luzardo after his one-out double. Key stat The Phillies are 30-13 when scoring at least two runs in road games. Up next Zack Wheeler (9-5, 2.64 ERA) tries to reach 10 wins for the fifth consecutive season with the Phillies in the series finale Sunday. Left-hander Patrick Corbin (6-7, 3.91) goes for Texas. ___ AP MLB:
