Johnny, Matthew Gaudreau's widows discuss grief, foundation in emotional interview
The widows of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau used the occasion of what would have been Johnny's 32nd birthday to formally launch a foundation to honor the late hockey players. But most of the interview with Meredith, Johnny's wife, and Madeline on ABC's "Good Morning America" dealt with the grief they have experienced in the nearly one year since their husbands died on Aug. 29, 2024. The brothers were hit by a suspected drunk driver while they were bicycling in New Jersey. Sean Higgins has pleaded not guilty to charges in the case. "Half of me, the best part of me, died that day, too," Meredith said. "I'm trying to be double now for my kids, even though I'm half of who I was." Both women were expecting at the time of their husbands' deaths. Madeline gave birth to her first child, Tripp, and Meredith her third, Carter. "Tripp's now hitting milestones, so that's heartbreaking because Matt was super excited to be a dad," Madeline said. The John and Matthew Gaudreau Foundation, first announced in March, will help youth hockey initiatives, support hockey families that have faced tragedy and help other families that have been affected by drunk driving. "It was never lost on John and Matty about how expensive it is to maintain hockey as a hobby," Meredith said. The brothers played at Boston College. Older brother Johnny became a seven-time All-Star with the Calgary Flames and Columbus Blue Jackets. Matthew played in the American Hockey League and ECHL and retired to coach youth hockey. The hockey community has kept the players' names in the forefront. USA Hockey had Johnny Gaudreau's jersey in the locker rooms at the 4 Nations Face-Off. Columbus fans sang "Happy Birthday" to Johnny Gaudreau Jr. at a game in February. The Blue Jackets and Detroit Red Wings honored the brothers with their outfits as they walked into their Stadium Series game. Meredith announced Blue Jackets first-round selections at the 2025 NHL Draft. "My daughter (Noa) is catching on," Meredith told ABC. "She's 2 and she asks for him a lot. She says, 'Daddy's in heaven' and I'm starting to explain to her what heaven is really because she wants to go to heaven and she says, 'I want him to come back' or 'let's call him.'" Madeline said she has been writing notes to Matthew since a couple days after the accident. "Lately it's been like, oh, you know, 'Tripp has two teeth now, but I know you know this.' Because it's hard for me to write and think that Matt isn't seeing this," she said. This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Gaudreau brothers' widows discuss grief, foundation launch

Three men arrested for allegedly boosting $2 million from armored truck parked at a Home Depot
Three men in Philadelphia are in police custody after they allegedly stole $2 million from a Brinks armored car, according to local police. Investigators claim that the robbery, which took place outside a Home Depot store, was an inside job, according to ABC 6. Daishaun "Daisha" Hughes-Murchison, 30; Brian Wallace, 31; and Trayvine Jackson, 31, all of Philadelphia, were arrested and have been charged with robbery that interferes with interstate commerce and the use of a firearm in a violent crime, according to police. All three appeared in court for the first time last week. The alleged robbery occurred in June. A judge ordered Jackson to be detained, while Wallace and Hughes-Murchison will stand for detention hearings this week. On June 21, the trio allegedly robbed the Brinks car while it was near a Home Depot in Philadelphia's Port Richmond area. Prosecutors believe that the Brinks driver was walking down an alley behind the Home Depot when the trio emerged with assault rifles. The men allegedly forced the driver of the truck to the ground and took his pistol and his keys, according to police. Investigators said that one man kept watch over the driver while the others removed money from the truck. The men allegedly fled the scene in a pair of vehicles, one of which had temporary Virginia tags. The vehicle with the Virginia tags was a rental, which was returned a few hours after the robbery. The second car allegedly belongs to Hughes-Murchison. Surveillance video at the car rental company reportedly captured Wallace returning the rental and then entering Hughes-Murchison's vehicle. Investigators also pulled the men's cell records and allegedly found that the men had been making calls in the vicinity of the heist around the time that it occurred. According to court records, Brinks officials told investigators that Jackson was an employee with the company but was suspended and then fired after an internal investigation. Police are reportedly working to determine if the robbery is connected to another Brinks armored vehicle robbery in Cheltenham — just a few miles north of Port Richmond — that occurred a day before the arrests were announced.

Australia sues Mercer Super over alleged failure to report member service breaches
(Reuters) -Australia's corporate regulator said on Thursday it had taken pension fund Mercer Super to court, alleging it failed to disclose investigations into major member service failures, including wrong insurance refunds to deceased members. The Australian Securities and Investments Commission said Mercer lacked adequate systems to comply with the reportable situations regime, which requires financial services licensees to promptly disclose ongoing investigations into significant breaches of their obligations. The alleged breaches occurred between October 2021 and September 2024. ASIC also claims Mercer understated the number of affected members in reports to the regulator. "We allege a pattern of longstanding and systemic failure by Mercer Super to comply with the law," said Sarah Court, the regulator's deputy chair. The case comes after the Federal Court fined Mercer A$11.3 million ($7.4 million) in August 2024 for making false claims about the environmental, social and governance credentials of its investments. Mercer Super did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
