The Escobar Fold phones were a scam after all
foldable phones
branded with
Pablo Escobar
's name? Turns out they were exactly what they looked like, too good to be true and a scam.
Olof Kyros Gustafsson
, the 32-year-old Swedish mastermind behind
Escobar Inc.
, pleaded guilty to fraud and money laundering charges, finally putting an end to one of tech's most brazen scams.
Gustafsson convinced thousands of people to shell out $399 for the "
Escobar Fold 2
," promising cutting-edge foldable technology at a fraction of Samsung's $2,000 Galaxy Fold price. The catch? Most never received their phones. Those lucky few (mostly influencers) who did get a package found
Samsung
Galaxy Folds wrapped in cheap gold foil,
Escobar Fold phones were not made by Escobar Inc.
The Escobar Inc caught attention when Marques Brownlee famously unboxed an Escobar Fold 2 on YouTube, revealing it was simply a
Samsung Galaxy Fold
with gold foil stickers slapped on top.

Even more telling, Gustafsson later admitted in company correspondence that the Fold 2 was "an overstock purchase of the Samsung Galaxy Fold" bought from retailers and wholesalers. The first device, the Fold 1, bore striking similarities to the FlexPai from Chinese manufacturer Royole, though Gustafsson denied any connection.
Now, that Fold 2, per Marques, was sent by Escobar Inc. themselves. That tells that Gustafsson deliberately sent sample devices to influencers to drum up interest, knowing the buzz would drive more orders. It worked, The videos inadvertently gave the fake company some credibility, eventually pocketing over $300,000 from unsuspecting customers.
Books instead of Folds
These thousands of people who paid around $399, would get a "Certificate of Ownership," over their mail. After that one would hope for their Escobar Fold phone. Instead they received Pablo Escobar's brother Roberto's autobiography and a congratulatory flyer featuring scantily-clad women. When buyers demanded refunds, Gustafsson used these book shipments as "proof" that products had been delivered, successfully blocking refund requests through payment processors.
The company didn't stop at phones. Gustafsson also hawked "Escobar Flamethrower," a dupe of Elon Musk's Boring Company flamethrower, an "Escobar Gold 11 Pro Phone" that was supposedly a refurbished iPhone, and even "Escobar Cash," that the Escobar Inc. marketed as the world's first physical cryptocurrency. None of these products existed beyond promotional materials and the occasional sample sent to reviewers.
CEO faces 20 years jailtime for $1.3M fraud
Federal investigators eventually caught up with Gustafsson's operation. He was arrested at his home in Marbella, Spain, in December 2023 during a joint raid by Spanish police and U.S. Internal Revenue Service agents. After unsuccessfully seeking asylum in Spain to avoid extradition, he was brought to Los Angeles to face charges for 115-count federal indictment
Court documents show Gustafsson laundered over $307,000 through bank accounts in the United States, Sweden, and the United Arab Emirates during just the first six months of the scheme.
Gustafsson sentencing is scheduled for December 5, and he faces faces up to 20 years in federal prison on fraud charges and up to 10 years for money laundering when he's sentenced on December 5th. He must also pay $1.3 million in restitution to the customers he duped, though many victims are likely wondering if they'll ever see that money either.

UK CALLING TN: FTA OPPORTUNITY
What does Tamil Nadu stand to gain from the recently announced free trade agreement with the UK? Quite a lot. It offers the state the "opportunity to expand its global industrial footprint across sectors where it already holds a competitive edge," says state industries minister TRB Rajaa. That's because the sectors that the FTA will positively impact include auto components, textiles, leather, and footwear – all of which are critical industries in TN's manufacturing and export basket. Says industry secretary V Arun Roy: "The UK FTA is a big positive for TN. In textiles, it makes our exports to Britain more competitive, and they are expected to more than double. The leather and footwear industry will also witness an export surge. Another beneficiary of more business and job creation will be our well-developed auto component industry." Auto components form the largest chunk of TN's nearly $117 billion (FY24-25) engineering export ecosystem. According to Shradha Suri Marwah, president, ACMA, the FTA will benefit the component sector through better "export opportunities in areas such as electric mobility, precision engineering, and lightweight materials." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Most Beautiful Female Athletes Right Now Undo Rajaa is unequivocal about how big the potential can be. "In the auto and auto components, the tariff reduction from over 100% to just 10% creates massive upside," he says. "Tamil Nadu's globally connected auto industry, which includes companies like Tata Motors (through Jaguar Land Rover) and TVS Motor Company (which owns Norton), can now seamlessly integrate their UK and Indian operations, scaling faster and creating more high-value jobs here in the state," he adds. State-headquartered auto giants are chuffed about this chance to tap the global market via the UK. Says Arun Roy, "The automobile industry with UK operations like Tata-JLR and TVS can use this low tariff opportunity to closely integrate their TN operations with their global supply chain." TVS Motor MD Sudarshan Venu greeted the FTA for opening up "new frontiers for Indian companies to take 'Make in India' to the world". The company, which is preparing to launch its British brand Norton's vehicles this year, "will benefit from the strengthening of trade links between India and the UK," he adds. You Can Also Check: Chennai AQI | Weather in Chennai | Bank Holidays in Chennai | Public Holidays in Chennai For TN companies with a presence in the UK, the FTA will be a "strategic enabler", says R Dinesh, chairman, TVS Supply Chain Solutions. "As a company with a presence in both India and the UK, (the FTA) will accelerate our ability to deliver cost-effective solutions to global customers." And where the companies go, skills follow. "The state is also a leader in creating qualified professionals in the service sector. These professionals will get more job opportunities in the UK," says Arun Roy. Regarding exports, Tamil Nadu's current strength lies in passenger vehicles (PVs), auto components, and tyres. But, it is now eyeing segments like electric drivetrains and engine management systems to "diversify its portfolio," said state MSME secretary Atul Anand in an earlier interview. The Tamil Nadu Industrial Policy 2021 and EV Policy 2023 incentivize investments in EVs and electronics manufacturing as part of the state's focus on high-value components. The state faces competition from global manufacturing hubs, such as China and South Korea, which have established dominance in EV components. The FTA will be a clear advantage on that front. Given that MSMEs "form the backbone of the auto component industry, they stand to gain from the liberalized terms of trade and improved access to UK markets," adds Marwah. The agreement will be critical for TN's other industries, such as textiles, where TN clocked $8 billion worth of exports last fiscal. "In textiles, the deal is expected to more than double exports from hubs like Tirupur to the UK, making our high-quality knitwear even more attractive in European markets," says Minister TRB Rajaa. The industry seems to concur. According to Dr A Sakthivel, vice chairman of the Apparel Export Promotion Council, the FTA will allow exporters to enjoy a stronger edge over the competition from Bangladesh, Vietnam, and China in the UK market. The same goes for footwear and leather, where Tamil Nadu makes up for nearly 40% of India's output. "The reduction in UK tariffs will boost both traditional leather goods and our fast-growing non-leather manufacturing clusters," Rajaa adds. J Rafiq Ahmed, chairman of Kothari Industrial Corporation, believes that the FTA "will make it cheaper to export labour-intensive goods". Given that the UK is India's third-largest trading partner as far leather and leather products are concerned and TN clocked $1.63 billion in leather exports in FY24-25, the zero duty deal is important for the state's exporters. After six years in jail, Mumbai man gets bail from Supreme Court in biz partner's murder
Mumbai: The Supreme Court granted bail to Sarang Patharkar, who was in jail for nearly six years in connection with the murder of his former business partner and ex-journalist Anand Narayan in Mumbai's Antop Hill area in 2019. The apex court cited prolonged incarceration and the absence of prior criminal records as key reasons for granting bail. The court set aside the order of the Bombay High Court's bail rejection in August 2024. "We have considered the submissions. Having regard to the fact that the appellant already suffered incarceration of about six years pending trial, and it is not pointed out that he has previous criminal antecedents, we are of the view that it is a fit case where the appellant be released on bail pending conclusion of the trial," the Supreme Court bench observed. The court directed that Patharkar be released on bail under conditions deemed appropriate by the trial court. She also pointed out that despite two time-bound directives from the Bombay High Court, the trial made little progress, with only 19 out of 51 witnesses examined so far. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is this legal?
