The brother of a newly married woman who went missing during her honeymoon in Meghalaya has told the police their family suspects she has been kidnapped.
Rescuers have made no headway in the search for Sonam, a tourist from Indore whose husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, was found murdered in a gorge in Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills district.
The missing woman's brother, Govind Raghuvanshi, said they believe she is alive and have no reason to think otherwise. The family also asked the case to be taken up by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
"It has been so many days and the search team has not got any clue. The rescuers have not yet found her phone or bag. So, this is kidnapping. We appeal to the police and the rescuers not to give up hope and change their tack to find her alive," Govind Raghuvanshi said.
"Some 200 metres below the place where Raja's body was found, there were tonnes of garbage. If this place is isolated, then who is dumping garbage? It must be the locals. Who would know that a body had to be dumped on that pile of garbage?" he said.
The Indore couple's phones showed the tower location of Nongriat before they went missing. However, the last post on Instagram by Raja was from Weisawdong - all places near the popular tourist hotspot Cherrapunji or Sohra.
Sonam last spoke to her mother-in-law on May 23 afternoon. The couple's phones got switched off after that.
The police have recovered a stained weapon which they believed was used in the murder of Raja, while a raincoat was also found in Mawkma village, a few kilometres from the gorge where Raja's body was found.
Mawkma is located between the crime scene and Sohrarim, where a scooter used by the couple was found abandoned on May 23.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma expressed grief and called it a very unfortunate incident. He told the family the state government and the police are working at every level to investigate the incident and punish whoever is found guilty.
The Indore couple got married on May 11 and left for Meghalaya on May 20.

CBI: Hisar man raped multiple kids, used them for pornography
The Hisar district Child Welfare Committee (CWC) Friday asked the CBI to arrange counselling sessions for the victims of an alleged sexual predator who has been arrested by the central agency for raping and circulating explicit child sexual abuse material on the internet. The CBI arrested the 40-year-old physically challenged bachelor from his Hisar residence on June 3, days after a case was registered on May 29 on charges of rape and sexual assault on multiple minor victims. The man was arrested following searches at his residence. The agency said it has seized electronic gadgets containing incriminating material, which showed that he allegedly raped, sexually assaulted, and threatened multiple children for pornography. Sources within the agency said that the accused, who operated a common service centre (CSC) in a rural area, had been exploiting the victims over the past few years. Two of the minor victims Thursday recorded their statements with the Hisar Child Welfare Committee. A member of the Committee, Manoj Kaushik said that the panel will ensure protection and welfare of the victims apart from financial assistance to them. The committee is established under the Juvenile Justice Act (J J Act), 2015, to handle cases of children in need of care and protection. They have the powers of a first-class magistrate and are responsible for providing care, protection, treatment, development, and rehabilitation for these children. According to the CBI, none of the victims or their families had approached police with the complaint before the agency charged the accused for creating, browsing, collecting, possessing, exchanging, and uploading child sexual abuse material. The agency identified the accused and the victims using the Interpol's International Child Sexual Exploitation (ICSE) database and Cyber Tipline Reports, generated by Google and submitted it to Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C). 'The analysis of the images and videos using cyber forensic tools revealed the location of the incidents to Hisar in Haryana, depicting multiple victims of sexual assault and abuse by the accused,' said the CBI.

1 2 Kolkata: The April 12 violence in Murshidabad which led to the deaths of a septuagenarian and his 44-year-old son in Jafrabad was engineered by a mob after a rumour was spread deliberately that a nearby mosque had been attacked and that security personnel had resorted to firing, says the Bengal police SIT charge sheet filed on Friday. The 983-page charge sheet, filed 55 days after the murders, names 13 persons and mentions that some of the perpetrators had a feud with the victims — Harogobindo Das and his son Chandan — over a piece of land. The 13 accused have been arrested from Bengal, Odisha and Jharkhand. All of them are in judicial custody. The Das family has already moved the Calcutta High Court seeking a CBI probe into the incident.
