A British Midland flight crashed in Stockport, a short distance from Manchester airport, carrying holidaymakers returning from Majorca, Spain.

All 37 people onboard Iberia Airlines flight 062 from Malaga, Spain, to Heathrow died when it crashed into Blackdown Hill in West Sussex.
– January 1969
Fifty people died when an Ariana Afghan Airlines plane crashed on approach to Gatwick airport.
– June 1972
A British European Airways plane crashed in Staines, Surrey, shortly after taking off from Heathrow airport.
All 118 passengers and crew died.
– August 1985
A British Airtours plane bound for Corfu, Greece, caught fire on the runway at Manchester airport.
Eighty people escaped but 55 were killed, mostly by smoke inhalation.
– December 1988
All 259 passengers and crew and 11 people on the ground were killed when Pan Am Flight 103 exploded above the Scottish town of Lockerbie 40 minutes into its flight from London Heathrow to New York.
It remains the UK's deadliest terrorist atrocity.
Former Libyan intelligence officer Abdelbaset al-Megrahi is the only man convicted in relation to the bombing.

Forty-seven people were killed and 67 were seriously injured when a British Midland 737 plane crashed while trying to make an emergency landing at East Midlands airport following an engine fire.
It struck the M1 in Kegworth after failing to reach the runway.

Taking place in September 2026, the route itself is being kept tightly under wraps. But the promise is clear: six days, 35 timed stages, shuttled transfers, uplifted trails and a route that captures Scotland's wild beauty and cultural charm. With just 80 rider slots available, entry is extremely limited. Categories will be available for both amateur and professional men and women. Suspect faces extradition over 'shooting of Ross Monaghan and Eddie Lyons Jr' in Spain

More info A 44-year-old Scouser faces extradition to Spain over the alleged gangland shooting of Ross Monaghan and Eddie Lyons Jnr, if approved by a UK court. The male was taken into custody by Merseyside Police in connection with the incident which saw the two Scottish criminal kingpins gunned down at Monaghans Bar in Fuengirola, in the Costa Del Sol region of Spain, on 31 May. Edinburgh Live reported how a male was taken into custody under an international arrest warrant issued by the Spanish authorities. Both Monaghan, 43, and Lyons Jnr, 46, were shot dead on May 31. The 44-year-old appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court on Saturday (June 14) for the commencement of extradition proceedings to Spain. His exact identity has not been revealed at this stage. A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm yesterday evening, Friday 13 June, a man was arrested in connection with two fatal shootings in Spain on 31 May.
